PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings in Dubai announce themselves with quite the geometric conviction of the stepped pyramid that houses Raffles Dubai — a form that draws on ancient Egyptian iconography with an earnestness that feels entirely at home within the Wafi complex, itself one of the emirate's more theatrically conceived retail and hospitality destinations. Completed in 2007, the seventeen-floor structure was designed by WS Atkins, its chamfered massing clad in warm sandstone-toned stone and articulated by terraced balconies that step back from a colonnaded porte-cochère where palm trees flank the entrance. The building carries the feeling of a monument conceived for permanence, not the glassy ephemerality that characterises much of Dubai's hotel architecture from the same period. Inside, the 246 rooms and suites sustain the Egyptianate mood through a layering of Islamic geometric ornament alongside it — plaster muqarnas-inspired ceiling panels, dark macassar ebony millwork, mother-of-pearl inlaid credenzas, and hand-knotted rugs in terracotta and sand tones that ground the marble floors. The pool terrace introduces a more flamboyant register: gold mosaic-tiled columns topped with illuminated globes rise beside the water, lending the space a ceremonial quality that edges toward the surreal. One of the hotel's restaurants counters this grandeur with exposed red brick walls, heavy timber and pendant ring lights — a deliberate industrial shift that keeps the overall experience from collapsing entirely into gilded spectacle.

"We booked this hotel through Emirates Holidays. We expected a top notch hotel and we were not disappointed. We arrived at the hotel just after 9.00am following an overnight flight. We did not expect to get our room at that time, we just hoped to be able to leave our luggage and relax at the reception area. Whilst checking in, we were advised that we would get our room as soon as one was available. By 10.30 we were in our room. We had booked a Club Dubai Skyline room and were looking forward to seeing it. We were amazingly surprised when we were given an upgrade to a Diplomatic Suite Skyline View. WOW, it was huge, separate bedroom and 2 toilets. And the balcony was the biggest we have ever seen. The Butler Team and Housekeeping introduced themselves. They were available 24/7 to assist us with anything we required. Housekeeping kept the room amazingly clean and water, tea and coffee were replenished daily. The breakfast at Azur was plentiful. Tea and coffee was served to the table, and your main course was cooked to order. There was a great array of bread and pastries, fruit and even a pancake /waffle station. The menu was very large and my favourite breakfast was Eggs Benedict which I highly recommend. The only thing for me, that could have made breakfast better, would have been a bigger pot of tea! The Club lounge was really nice. There were two levels , the upper one being for families with children. This was a brilliant idea as not everyone wants to listen to noisy kids. The lounge opened at 12.00 for tea coffee and soft drinks. In the afternoon, Afternoon Tea was available. We only had it once but it was delicious and well presented. From 17.00 to 19.00 cocktails and canapés were available. This was a very busy time, often resulting in guests queuing to get in. The food again, was vey nice and well presented. All drinks, which were plentiful were served by staff. They couldn’t do enough for you. Special mention must go to Salina who looked after us very well and always looked delighted to see us. We only used the swimming pool area once. It was lovely and there was plenty shady areas and umbrellas. For the size of the hotel, there are not a lot of sun-beds but staff always tried to find something suitable for guests. The bottles of water in the cool bags was a lovely touch. A 5 star hotel with 6 star staff. Everyone that we came into contact with had a smile on their face and were happy to spend time chatting about our day. If we were to return to Dubai, we would certainly use this hotel."

"This was our 3rd time at this hotel, and it keeps getting better and better. Travelled with my daughter and young grandson and everyone we came across was warm, friendly and genuine. We stayed in one of the Diplomatic Suites and it is definitely worth the upgrade if you are travelling as a family. The hotel and pool areas are spotless, the food in Azure and Solo is fantastic. Unfortunately, we couldn't access the Club Room on an evening as it was too busy, but they kindly sent some food and drinks to our room. Looking forward to returning next year. Once again thank you for a lovely stay and Oliver still has the little car housekeeping got for him."
