PB hotel design editorial

Nineteen historic merchant houses in Sharjah's Heart of Sharjah heritage district, some dating to the early twentieth century, were painstakingly restored and woven together to form The Chedi Al Bait — a 53-key hotel that functions less as a conventional property than as a living piece of Arabian Gulf urban history. The restoration preserved the coral-stone and gypsum-plastered walls, the wind towers with their characteristic bulbous finials, and the carved wooden doors that punctuate the low-rise courtyard facades, while GHM Hotels introduced contemporary hospitality infrastructure without erasing the architectural memory embedded in every surface. Inside, two distinct registers operate across the guestrooms: some suites carry richly turned dark-walnut four-poster beds set against polished concrete floors and traditional mangrove-pole ceilings, with red Baluchi rugs grounding the warmth of aged timber joinery, while others take a cooler, more minimal approach — pale oak four-posters beneath whitewashed barrel-vaulted ceilings, slatted timber wainscoting, and arched windows fitted with stained-glass transom lights that cast jewelled shadows across limestone-toned plaster walls. The outdoor spaces sustain the same dialogue between old fabric and new insertion: a pool courtyard frames lap lanes beneath a dark-stained timber pergola, its end wall composed of original coral-stone masonry, and the dining terraces gather beneath restored wind towers at dusk, candlelight catching the rough texture of walls that predate the hotel by nearly a century.

"We had a short 5 day stay at the Chedi, we’ve been to a few other branches elsewhere so wanted to try this one. It’s a very different vibe compared to other uae hotels. It’s very cultural and feels like you’re staying in a fort. The rooms are nice, clean and dark wood decor. The staff in the main restaurant Hossam and Divine were the very best, very polite kind and friendly people. They were very attentive at all times and we had good conversations with them. The spa is small and I felt the lady didn’t really want us with children in the pool and she immediately made a point to us that we have to be quiet and away from other guests. It was so embarrassing as I’ve paid full price and not half price to be ushered away from adult couples. The only couple that were there didn’t seem to mind that I was in the pool with my very well behaved and happy kids, but the spa lady didn’t seem have a problem. Reception staff and concierge were nice. I think this is a nice base if you want to explore Sharjah which is a much quieter emirate compared to the other states."

"The hotel highlights and amplifies one of the best reasons to go to Sharjah: history. Embedded in the historic core, part of The Chedi is in restored buildings, with the rest of it in newer buildings that feel historic on the outside. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and a perfect mix of Sharjah style and modern amenities. Located adjacent to the Souq Al Arsa and just a few minutes walk from a bustling shopping area, it is easy to find souvenirs to take home (check out the souq's People of Determination shop and try the tahini dates and honey at the shops across from it). The museums and other historic buildings nearby are easy to reach by foot, even in the heat. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly, informative and ready to help. The kind touches were much appreciated, from extra makdous with breakfast (which is truly amazing!) to a cake on the day of my daughter's college graduation to extra granola bars (they are house-made and delicious). The pool is peaceful and the staff thought to bring us cool water and scented compresses. The staff consistently asked how they could make our stay better."
