PB hotel design editorial

Foster + Partners rarely turn their hand to hotel design, which makes The Lana, Dorchester Collection, Dubai a genuinely unusual proposition — a 30-storey tower on Marasi Bay Marina where the architecture has been engineered as much for comfort as for spectacle. The building's twin-tower massing, connected by a glazed mid-section and visible from across Business Bay's waterway, deploys deep overhanging floor plates as passive cooling devices, while seven interlocking vertical gardens stitch greenery into the facade at intervals. Every room receives a private balcony — a consequence of the deliberately slender floor plates — and the whole composition, finished in warm champagne tones, catches the Gulf light differently through the day. Inside, Parisian duo Gilles & Boissier have translated the UAE's desert landscape into an interior palette of considerable restraint: raw and polished marble, alabaster detailing, and muted earth tones that run from warm cream through terracotta. The 225 rooms carry this language with particular confidence — textured linen headboards, rosewood millwork, and pendant lights in smoked amber glass give the guestrooms a quiet richness that avoids the aggressive glamour common to the city. The rooftop infinity pool, with the Burj Khalifa aligned at one end of its sightline, shifts the register entirely — all travertine and cream linen cabanas. Then there is the bar, whose ceiling installation of what appears to be hundreds of amber glass fragments suspended above a circular counter reintroduces the drama, on its own terms.

"We spent a wonderful week at The Lana, and what stayed with us most is how effortlessly everything works. The hotel is beautiful, elegant and extremely comfortable, with a calm and refined design that makes it easy to slow down and simply enjoy being there. The rooms, facilities and overall atmosphere reflect remarkable attention to detail — everything feels thoughtful and perfectly maintained. What truly makes the hotel special, however, is the people. Every interaction with the staff was warm, natural and genuinely pleasant. The doormen welcomed us every day with humor and kindness, and after a few days returning to the hotel felt like coming back to familiar faces. Traveling as a family with a child felt incredibly easy thanks to the attentiveness of the team. Housekeeping was flawless — discreet, precise and always perfectly timed. A special thank you to the Front Office Manager, who helped us during a tense moment with calm professionalism and a delicate sense of humor that we truly appreciated. Our family will remember this stay with great warmth, and we sincerely hope to return to The Lana one day."

"This hotel is a bit confused. It is trying be a bit like the Five and a bit like Bulgari. It’s more like a mini Five. The staff are generally attentive and mostly Russian speakers. The hotel has a nightclub on top floor. It has a business luxury vibe. Breakfast is excellent. It is a hotel for players and business people who want to be cool and like the nightlife. Rooms are not well designed. Views are excellent."

"We spent the last two nights of our Dubai trip at The Lana. We are huge fans of The Dorchester Collection so was very excited to visit The Lana. The hotel is absolutely stunning! The rooms are so beautiful with the most sensational views of The Burj Khalifa. Every restaurant is pure class. The rooftop pool is amazing. But what sets this hotel apart is the phenomenal customer service! When we arrived Adam from Guest relations come and spent so much time with us. Adam knew we were DC fans and to take the time to sit with us and show us around really meant so much! He is wonderful and such an asset to The Dorchester Collection! Gateon the Food & Beverage manager was remarkable! We knew him when he used to work in Coworth Park in the UK. He went above and beyond to take care of of us and even arranged a visit to meet the chefs and have a tour of the kitchens which was a highlight of our trip! Every member of staff is so warm and friendly. Special thanks also to all of these amazing staff members for taking incredible care of us, Angelique, Vanessa, Kelvin, Sako, Augustine & Simone. The executive Chef Mr Samantha and your team. The Lana, you stole our hearts and we will be back later in the year. Every little special touch didn’t go unnoticed. Thank you for everything. Sam & Paul Bishop"

"I stayed here one night. Got a nice upgrade to a corner marina view suite. They had cool treats in the room such as exotic grapes and nice pastries and of course dates. The shower in the room was weak and there was no steam room, but the pool was fine (water a bit coolish in winter) and it offers a cool city view. The gym was also fine. After a 12 hour flight, I really do like having a steam room in a hotel. Breakfast buffet was lavish and there were nice places to sit outside on the terrace. You have good views of the Burj Khalifa and the city. I wasn't crazy about the lunch menu for the rooftop restaurant. The hotel is a nice new addition to Dubai but it's a city hotel. Its advantage in that department are that it is near the town center without being in all the congestion that is in the center. You cannot walk to town center because the marina is in the way. There is a metro station nearby but I wasn't there long enough to find it. There are other hotels that have beach access and that have better spa facilities and a warmer pool such as the Bulgari and Four Seasons Jumeirah."

"Its my second stay and I have to say my favorite things about the Lana is the food, especially in the downstairs lobby, and the comfortable rooms (good quality water, soft beds, Dyson hairdryer, they have it all…) . The service is also wonderful, sometimes in reception its a bit “cold”, but overall they are efficient and attentive. Shout out to Gustavo the concierge who with his great smile would help me out with everything. A smile goes a long way sometimes :)"
