PB hotel design editorial

From a distance at dusk, the property materialises from the Ras Al Khaimah desert like an ancient Arabian settlement — wind towers, domed pavilions, and mud-coloured walls arranged among ghaf trees across 500 acres of protected nature reserve. This is the central design conceit of The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert: not a hotel inserted into the landscape but a village seemingly grown from it, its low-rise sandstone structures borrowing the massing and material logic of vernacular Emirati architecture without tipping into pastiche. The 101 tented pool villas are where the design earns its keep most convincingly. Circular tent canopies draped in ivory fabric rise over interiors furnished in warm walnut and amber-toned woven leather headboards, hand-knotted carpets in desert ochre and ivory, and pierced metalwork lanterns that cast geometric shadow patterns drawn from Islamic geometric tradition. Sheer curtains frame panoramic glazed walls opening directly onto private plunge pools and dune views — the colonial-era campaign furniture and caned chairs placing the rooms closer to a romanticised British India than strict Gulf heritage, a hybrid that feels deliberate rather than confused. The all-day dining restaurant follows the same grammar: carved mashrabiya screens in walnut filter garden light across travertine floors, while teal and terracotta upholstered chairs mix beneath latticed brass pendant lanterns. The teak-decked terrace, lit by oversized brass lanterns at dusk, anchors the resort's social heart to the surrounding wilderness without interruption.

"We chose The Ritz-Carlton for a special honeymoon dinner, and it exceeded all of our expectations. It truly became one of the most beautiful memories of our trip. The private setting created an intimate and romantic atmosphere, allowing us to relax and fully enjoy the evening. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, and the level of hospitality was exceptional from start to finish. We would especially like to express our sincere gratitude to Manish for his attentive and gracious service, and to Chef Joshua for the exquisite cuisine. Their dedication made our evening unforgettable. We highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a truly special and memorable dinner."

"Excellent hotel with spacious villas. Surprisingly good restaurants and the exceptional good service help to feel like home. Worth staying for a couple of days. Only weak point: despite the otherwise justified high price level the spa is payable."

"The overall stay at this hotel is extremely disappointing. Service and quality wise I would honestly rate it 1 star, given the quality of service which should be provided for a Ritz Carlton and for the price one pays. The only reason I give them an extra star is that the setting/set-up of the resort remains unique, including the rooms layout. However, unfortunately it has been completely run down by this operator, and I give you hereby a selection of the issues we faced (yes there were even more issues/example I could give). - The reservation process was an enormous hassle. We had to follow up numerous times to get our bookings in order; we often got no replies until we resend emails 2 or 3 times, names in our booking continued to be wrongly spelled after various reminders, dates were mistaken, and restaurant bookings were made wrongly. -Grooming of the FO staff is far below standard and reflecting of a 3-star hotel;- hotel Operators upon calling were patronizing, bordering rudeness, - our restaurant bill was wrong 3 times (at one point 5 extra covers were charged?) - Gym: the only multifunctional machine was OOO and when I asked the staff they said it’s been for long time; all dumbbells between 8 and 20kg were (?) ..”I think they are ordered” was the answer. - the maintenance is appalling. The villas look like they have no been looked after for years and we encountered so many broken items all around. Wildlife feeding is far overpriced. You pay about US$ to sit in a jeep to see some gazelles and oryx which you also see just walking around the resort…and the driver throws one hand of food to the animals. - The overall service is just far below standard unfortunately"
