PB hotel design editorial

One of Arizona's oldest resorts, founded in 1896 and beloved by presidents and Hollywood figures through the first half of the twentieth century, Castle Hot Springs sat abandoned for decades after a 1976 fire reduced much of the property to ruins — making its 2019 reopening, following a painstaking multi-year restoration, one of the more emotionally resonant comeback stories in American hospitality. The original therapeutic draw remains intact: natural hot springs still feed a series of pools cut directly into the volcanic rock of the Hieroglyphic Mountains north of Phoenix, the mineral-rich water flowing through canyon formations draped in desert fan palms and saguaro. The interiors balance the property's dude-ranch heritage against a cleaner contemporary sensibility. Cottage rooms deploy shiplap cladding, vaulted ceilings with dark exposed beams, and a warm range of materials — burnished leather headboards with nailhead trim, kilim-pattern rugs in red and ochre, rough-sawn oak nightstands — against white-painted tongue-and-groove walls that keep the effect from tipping into rusticity. Larger suites shift registers entirely, anchored by floor-to-ceiling stacked-stone fireplaces and heavy timber ceiling beams above neutral linen upholstery, vintage Sonoran photography arranged in a grid above the bed. The open-air dining room folds back to frame Camelback Mountain beyond the pool terrace, chairs upholstered in Southwestern geometric fabric establishing a quiet through-line to the landscape outside.

"I turned 40 last week and my husband surprised me with a trip to this resort. Where to begin? Everything, every single aspect of this place is exceptional. We started our journey by landing in the airport and taking a drive into the desert north of the city. The drive says it was 1 hour and 15 minutes but it didn't feel that far because you will exist Carefree Hwy and take a dirt road the rest of the way in. We passed some wild burro and the scenery was beautiful. This resort really is a desert oasis. We pulled around a corner and suddenly there is a lush area of green grass and palm trees nestled right in the arid desert. Pulling into the resort the main road is lined with citrus trees of all different varieties. The smell of orange blossoms fills the air. We pulled into the main welcoming building and were greeted with someone taking our luggage and another staff member serving us some "divine bliss" tea. And it really was that. The grounds are kept up immaculately. Our room was clean and comfortable and came fully stalked with tons of snacks, two half bottles of wine (white and red) and sodas, sparkling water, and some homemade chocolate truffles that were better than any others I've ever had. There was a hand written letter welcoming us to the resort as well. The night we arrive was my birthday and the menu was specialized at dinner with a birthday message just for me. The desert that night also had a piece of chocolate with a happy birthday message. No detail goes overlooked here. The food. This topic needs its own paragraph. I've never had better food anywhere in my life. And EVERY. SINGLE. MEAL was what seemed like the best meal I'd ever eaten. For breakfast and lunch I tried to keep it light so I could indulge at dinner (my metabolism isn't like it once was) and even the yogurt bowl.... how do they make a yogurt bowl that good?! All of the kitchen chef staff is uber talented. Not only were the meals exceptional but the desserts, the breads, the pastries were all superb. I'm not normally someone that walks around all day thinking about my next meal, but I sure was there! Lodging. We had our own little cabana if you will. The size of the lodging is perfect. The spaces all felt very large. I'm usually never a fan of bedding anywhere I go and that was not the case here. The bed itself, the sheets, the pillows, were all super comfortable. There was also an outdoor shower, bathtub and fire pit. At night you can bathe outdoors and look up at the stars and it really is dreamy. We would hear the wild burro doing their little "hee-haw" and it made us giggle every time. Activities. We partook in great activities within 2 days. The first day we did the Via-ferrata with Greg and it was so fun! A great workout too. Greg pointed out some desert wildlife which was fun to see. He was super knowledgable about birds and was also a wealth of knowledge about the geology of the surrounding area and the hot springs water source. I do wish we had done other via-ferrata tours while we were there but we will book for longer than 3 days next time. We then took the electric bikes offered by the resort and explored the surrounding desert area including the agave farm and the chicken coop. We hiked, we did the archery class and the axe throwing class, all were amazing. Spa. I had a facial treatment with Alycia and she was fantastic. My facial itself was amazing but I left that treatment feeling like I had made a new friend. Honestly, I felt that way about a ton of the staff there. The hot springs. I really don't think another place like this exists anywhere in the states. The hot spring are crystal clear, ZERO odor and my skin felt so soft after being in them. There are 4 different pools with progressively hotter temps as you get closer to the source. The source of the hot springs is literally water seeping out of crevices in a rock. It was so interesting trying to find out what exactly was going on there but Greg was very helpful in filling in some information gaps for us. We spent most of our time in the hot springs and we made a few friends out of other guests as well. The details. This place doesn't skimp on details. Throughout the whole extent of our trip there were little things that didn't go overlooked. They made a tremendous effort to make me feel super special on my birthday. From the special dinner menu to the happy birthday chocolate on my dessert and the handwritten card left in my room, it really was all so thoughtful. The wifi password has you thinking about what really matters while you are there and it was really cute. Every night we were left with a little surprise on our bed giving us an excuse to stay unplugged and really just enjoy being there with each other. On our last day as we packed up our things we inquired if we could order some lunch to go as we were heading to the airport after a quick detour. When they pulled the car up for us to get into, they had our lunch packaged and waiting for us in the car. The little detour we took on our way to the airport was to visit my deceased grandmother. This visit to Arizona was the first time back to the state since her funeral 4 years prior; going back just seemed wrong without seeing her while there. Two incredible staff took the time to let me talk about her and her love of gardening. They picked a few flowers for me so I could bring them to her. It was really special and meant so much to me. In short, if you are debating coming here. Do it. It will leave a special mark on your heart. I can't wait to return."

"This was our first time at this resort. It went beyond any expectation I had. From our first greeting at the front desk to the tour on the golf cart given by Gage, who was so polite, friendly and informative and our GC pickup from Alex at the hot springs. Our breakfaster server Andray, lunch servers Lori and Istvan, and our dinner team of Alec, Dominic, Stacie and Mel....every single one of them made our experience the best I've ever had. And it wasn't something they did "extra", it's just how they treat everyone who comes into contact with them. It's the mindset of everyone who works there. That is what makes this place so special. The chef's food that was prepared every day was just amazing, clever and so, so fresh, the evening turndowns and small gifts they leave behind, the beautiful and majestic mountains surrounding you, our fun UTV guide Scott, everyone at the activities desk. They even have S'mores for you and fires to roast them on. Flashlights so you can find your way in the dark, they have thought of everything. If you are looking for a place to rest, relax, recharge and experience exceptional service, this is the place for you. We WILL be back! - Anthony & Stacie DeRosa"

"Love CHP!!! We went with our 2 adult children and their spouses. We stayed in the cottage and was great for after dinner comradery. We live in disparate locations so it gave us great bonding time. Note that there are only 2 bathrooms so might be an issue for your group. We loved that they stocked it with wine, beer, sparkling water and snacks. Swam laps in the mineral water pool most days and luxuriated in the hot springs. My family all oved that there were 3 different temp spring pools and went for hours each day. We also took the exciting e-bike trip and Agave tasting - both worth the extra fee. Equally good were the daily guided hikes, archery, farm tour and mindfulness activities which are all included in your room rate. I cannot stop raving about the staff at all of the activities and in the dining room. Each person was so lovely, calm and kind. Even saying hello as they pass you walking throughout the resort. The staff as a group was amongst the friendliest we have ever come across in our travels and we usually stay at five star resorts and hotels. The icing on the cake is the food. At the included breakfast, lunch and dinner the food was always fresh and delicious. The chef tries to utilize their farm ingredients as much as possible. Staff is very concerned about dietary restrictions and aversions. There are varied items on the menu and our group of 6 never had trouble finding a few options at every meal. The pastry items and soups were a nightly hit but we all really enjoyed the entrees as well. The Allium and Prosciutto pizza was memorable as were the ice cream sandwiches, burger and chicken sandwiches at lunch. I loved the seared tuna salad so much I ordered it two days in a row. Breakfast sandwiches became the popular family order in the morning. On Tripadvisor you do not know the reviewers past experiences and whether their comments reflect a first time lux experience or not. Let me say that I am a regular Auberge hotel client and the dining experience is very comparable except at CHS the food is included. Having stayed last year at Blackberry Farms, we feel that CHS is the clear winner as it includes so many fun experiences in the room rate and a similar dining experience. The rooms at CHS are very nice as well."

"Yeah. Sooo... Best place we've ever been. Crazy to say this, because Amalfi coast, Barcelona, Cabo and many other places would be in the running. First the food! Farm to table. So fresh. 5 course meal every night. Whatever you need to do to keep Melqui (the chef) just make sure you do that. We're coming back and the food was the highlight. But also it just felt so serene. It was 80% capacity and it just felt like we had the place to ourselves. The room was amazing. Service was impeccable...professional and friendly. Massages were top notch. The drive in is definitely bumpy (recommend large SUV or truck with larger tires), but that kinda added to the mystique of the place. Like we're on fantasy island desert oasis edition. Definitely want to do more of the activities next time. We did the scrub creations with Greg and I felt my wife pulled me there, but I really enjoyed that too! We took a big hike, too far, to agave farm and fortunately found a ride back from Ryan (?) and Roxy and it's like we got a tour guide. Love the history of the place... good enough for Rockefellers and JFK, good enough for me! I'm rambling. But finally, I took the lead on booking this trip for our 10 year anniversary... and I came out like a hero. So thank you!"
