PB hotel design editorial

Frank Lloyd Wright's textile block system — the same interlocking precast concrete geometry he developed for his California houses of the early 1920s — found its grandest hospitality application in the Arizona Biltmore, which opened in 1929 under the architectural direction of Albert Chase McArthur, with Wright serving as a consulting presence whose imprint proved impossible to contain. The result is a low-slung, two-story resort campus of remarkable coherence: patterned concrete block in warm desert gold stepping back against the bare granite face of Squaw Peak, the massing horizontal and earth-bound in a way that feels genuinely Wrightian even as the full attribution remains historically contested. Camelback Mountain frames the backdrop in the images here with an almost theatrical specificity, the pool terraces and fire-pit cabanas sitting in comfortable dialogue with the ornamental blockwork behind them. A recent renovation — completed in 2021 after a closure brought on by a fire suppression system installation — refreshed the resort's 738 rooms and introduced interiors that move between two registers. The older guest rooms retain a quiet resort classicism: striped carpeting, upholstered benches in celadon velvet, panelled headboards with copper accent detailing. The newer suites push toward a lighter California-desert vocabulary, with white oak millwork, jute-weave area rugs, tiled kiva fireplaces, and black-frame windows framing saguaro plantings. The pool bar, with its backlit scalloped counter and illuminated canopy structure overhead, delivers the resort's more theatrical ambitions after dark.

"The Arizona Biltmore is an incredible hotel and easily one of the most unique places we have stayed. The history of the property and the architecture alone make it special. Walking around the grounds you can really appreciate the design and how thoughtfully the hotel was built. It has that classic historic resort feel while still having great modern facilities. The pools and outdoor areas are fantastic and the entire property is beautifully maintained. It is the kind of place where you can easily spend a full day just relaxing at the hotel. What really made our stay great though was the people. We arrived after an overnight flight that ended up being delayed more than six hours so we were pretty wiped out when we got there. Justin Lawson at the front desk went out of his way to take care of us and make sure we got settled in comfortably. He was incredibly helpful and genuinely wanted to make sure we had a great stay which meant a lot after a long travel day. Everyone we encountered at the hotel was friendly and welcoming and you can tell the staff really take pride in the property. We had a fantastic stay and would absolutely come back."

"We had a fabulous stay in a balcony room. The variety of pools is great. I had one of the smaller ones to myself for much of one day. The restaurant, McArthur’s was delicious. I had an amazing salad and drink there. The one downside is that a brunch menu is served on both Saturday and Sunday, limiting options. Check in was easy, we qualified for early check-in but only got the bro our room an hour early. That said, we did get amenity keys so we could use the pools and facilities early. We had guaranteed late checkout of 4pm which is generous and much appreciated. I did the historical tour of the hotel and highly recommend that if you’re interested in history and/or architecture. The location worked for us. It was a bit of a drive for Spring training games in Peoria and Goodyear, but it was worth it for us to stay in a resort. The parking garage is a bit of a hike to the rooms, so it may be worth it to use the valet. Lastly, make sure you use your Amex and Hilton status to get perks. For a quick weekend getaway, on a hot weekend, I highly recommend staying here."

"Property expansive and pools are nice but a motion sensor restricting AC in the evening to 76 degrees in the room is ridiculous. After my first night of swearing through the night and getting up to adjust the AC, i inquired at the front desk and he stated that they were “fixing it”. Night 2 same issue until someone came and overrode the system. Never stayed in a hotel that rationed your AC at night. I requested a call from hotel management….which I still have not received one back. Go elsewhere."

"The Arizona Biltmore absolutely delivered. Our room was spotless and stylish, the shower was piping hot, and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. We kept finding ourselves back at the Spire Bar because the food and service were consistently excellent. And the pools—plural!—offered something for every mood. A truly wonderful stay."
