PB hotel design editorial

Copper ceiling panels etched with Hohokam-inspired petroglyphs, a longhorn skull sconce mounted beside a walnut credenza, upholstery in Pendleton-adjacent geometric prints — these are the signals through which The Camby, set in Phoenix's Biltmore corridor, declares its allegiance to the Sonoran Desert rather than to generic Southwest kitsch. The 11-floor, 277-room property was rebranded and redesigned around 2015 when Marriott folded it into the Autograph Collection, with interior work oriented around a narrative of Arizona cultural identity that runs from the lobby through to every guest room ceiling. The lobby itself earns its authority through classical architecture treated with irreverence — a coffered rotunda with white wainscoting and veined marble floors provides the formal bones, while a freestanding reception desk, copper rod screen, and angular contemporary seating introduce deliberate friction. The bar is paneled entirely in dark-stained wood with a carved marble counter and a tufted cream banquette anchoring the room around a working fireplace, a composition that carries the feeling of a private club rather than hotel amenity space. Guest rooms balance the warmer Southwest palette — copper tray ceilings, red-and-cream geometric sofas, leather task chairs at warm walnut desks — against restrained grey carpet and white crown molding, giving the cultural references room to land without overwhelming the spaces that guests actually sleep in.

"We are Marriott titanium members. We arrived at 230 n the afternoon after asking for an early check in. We were promptly told our room would not be ready for an hour or two. Strike one. We then asked for keys to the pool so we could go wait there and we were told the pool is closed today for a private party and we could walk over to the AC and use their pool. When asked why we were not told (the entire reason we came to Phoenix for the weekend was to sit at the pool) we were told “it’s not like we can notify everyone.” Actually that would’ve very easy to do.especially your higher status guests. We would have changed our plans and stayed elsewhere. No one ever offered a drink at the bar while we wait. I would never come back here. We stay exclusively at Marriotts and travel nonstop. I’ve never had some awful treatment."

"The Camby Hotel is a lovely hotel with clean, spacious rooms and a great location across from the mall and a dine-in movie theatre. The area felt safe and well kept. Food on-site was very good at a reasonable price, and room service was impressively quick. Staff were friendly throughout our stay, especially the front desk team. The only downside was the pool, which wasn’t a highlight for us. The coffee shop was good, but we would have liked more pastry options and slightly longer hours. Overall, it was a very good stay with solid service, and we would recommend it."

"Another great experience at The Canby. We had a small group in town for a conference, as we have for years, and everyone genuinely appreciated the hotel. It’s a beautiful property with a very friendly, accommodating staff. When I ordered a breakfast that wasn’t on the menu, the team took the instructions without hesitation and prepared it exactly as requested. Our speakers are still commenting on how much they enjoyed the hotel. Additionally, when we needed to extend our stay by a couple of nights due to weather, Anthony Rocha, Director of the Front Office, was exceptional to work with—professional, responsive, and genuinely helpful. The ladies in our group loved the shopping across the street and the variety of nearby restaurants. Highly recommended."

"We had to make a last-minute pivot while visiting our son for ASU’s Family Weekend and had the pleasure of staying at The Camby Hotel. This hotel did not disappoint. The property is kept in pristine condition, and the staff were consistently pleasant and welcoming. One fun perk was the nightly champagne happy hour. The only downside was that they occasionally ran out of champagne or glassware, which caused a bit of a wait—but it was still a nice touch. There’s a pool and gym on-site, and my boys definitely took full advantage of both. The location is also a big plus—the hotel sits directly across from a shopping center with great restaurants and excellent shops, making it very convenient. Overall, it was a comfortable and enjoyable stay, and I would absolutely stay here again."
