PB hotel design editorial

At the base of Pinnacle Peak, where the Sonoran Desert pushes up through ancient granite boulders the color of fired clay, a cluster of low-slung adobe structures steps carefully up the hillside as though placed there by the landscape rather than imposed upon it. The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, which opened in 1999 with 210 casita-style rooms across just two low-rise floors, was designed by Gluckman Mayner Architects with a massing strategy borrowed from Puebloan vernacular — flat parapets, projecting vigas, stuccoed walls that shift from bone-white to warm ochre as the desert light moves through the day. The interior palette, refreshed in recent years, translates that geological warmth into caramel leather headboards with diamond-quilted stitching, textured woven rugs in sand and grey, and kiva-style corner fireplaces in plastered white — every room opening through louvered mesquite shutters onto private terraces where the boulders feel close enough to touch. The outdoor dining terrace, sheltered beneath heavy log-and-beam ramadas in a construction method that owes as much to Spanish Colonial mission architecture as to modern resort design, frames Pinnacle Peak directly across the pool — a composition that manages to feel both designed and entirely inevitable. It remains one of the American Southwest's most convincing arguments that luxury resort architecture and genuine landscape sensitivity are not, in fact, mutually exclusive.

"The Four Seasons Scottsdale is as beautiful as a typical Four Seasons. The rooms are nice, and the restaurants Proof and Onyx are good. Unfortunately the service is well below par - and at the end of the day, what I am really paying for is service. The concierge is maddeningly incompetent - whether by phone or on email. I would genuinely love for any GM or leader of the Four Seasons to read my email trail with your concierge. Once we were there, we attempted to organize massage bookings at the Spa. We received equally atrocious service and gave up even trying to book. We texted and called several times, each time they said they’ll be back to us in a minute. And they never came back to us. Is it really that busy? I have never seen the concierge dealing with anyone when I walk by. The overall impression, however, are the concierges are extremely busy - and any request (to give the hotel more money, ultimately) is an infringement on their time - which quite plainly is perceived to be far more valuable than mine. At any rate, we paid roughly $4K per night for 2 rooms. Four Seasons Scottsdale got my money, but they will never get my recommendation. Please fix your service."

"Beautiful property surrounded by the scenic Arizona desert. The rooms are lovely, bright, spacious, and smell wonderful. The pools are very nice, and I really enjoyed my time here. The only drawback is the location is a little remote, but I think that's deliberate and keeps you feeling like you're separate from the hustle and bustle."

"A lot to love about this Four Seasons - beautiful location, great standard of service from everyone and the food was very good in both restaurants. Our 3 star rating was down to the standard of the room. Very high end price at c$2,000/night (including taxes) for quite an old fashioned room but the main issue was an unpleasant blocked sink that was a problem each day. Multiple helpful people tried to fix it - which unfortunately took hours, creating noise (not their fault!) and a lack of privacy. They finally offered to move us to the next door room late afternoon of our last full day. Unfortunately by that time we were already heading out for the evening so did not have time or particularly want to pack and unpack again on what was our last night. We received a refund of $200 which I found disappointing and surprising for the level of disruption and price of the room."
