PB hotel design editorial

Edward Durell Stone designed the original structure in 1956, and the building's mid-century credentials remain the most legible thing about Hotel Valley Ho — from the cantilevered balconies and flat roofline visible against Camelback Mountain, to the mosaic-tiled facade panels that give the six-story tower its characteristic pop of terracotta, amber, and teal. Stone, who would later design the Kennedy Center and the original Museum of Modern Art expansion, brought the same confident modernism to Scottsdale that he was applying to civic buildings across the country, and the result carries the atmosphere of Rat Pack-era Arizona at its most optimistic. The property closed in the 1990s and sat dormant before a substantial restoration and expansion reopened it in 2005 with 241 rooms, recovering the original structure while adding new guest wings that defer, mostly successfully, to Stone's massing. Inside, the interiors work through a layered mid-century vocabulary that stops short of pastiche. Guest rooms expose board-formed concrete ceilings — visible in the images — and pair them with tufted platform beds, sunburst mirror wall treatments, and deep-pile charcoal carpet, the whole palette running cool gray and slate blue against warm walnut millwork. The lounge spaces pull more theatrical: stacked brick columns, walnut room dividers with elongated oval cutouts in the manner of 1960s decorative screens, and turquoise candle votives scattered across low tables lit from above by café-string lighting. At the pool, wide-brimmed palms and brightly cushioned chaise lounges complete a tableau that Stone would likely have recognized.

"We loved this place! Definitely a party atmosphere but also very classy and felt like a true retreat. Really cool art deco late 50’s and early 60’s aesthetic to reflect when the Hotel was built. Zusa has great food on site! Great really kind staff and valet people; would love to come again. Room was clean, modern and quiet."

"We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Valley Ho, but one of the absolute highlights was the phenomenal hospitality we received from Eddie at the restaurant. What impressed us most was that Eddie’s level of service clearly wasn’t something reserved just for our table. We noticed him greeting guests at surrounding tables whom he remembered from previous visits—recalling their usual orders, asking about specific things they had discussed before, and genuinely following up with them. It was so refreshing to see someone take that much pride in making guests feel remembered and cared for. He did the exact same for us throughout our stay. It was my birthday, and Eddie went completely out of his way to have the staff sign a birthday card for me, which was such a thoughtful and unexpected touch. When we saw him again the following day, he remembered my birthday and made a point to ask how it went and how we were enjoying our stay. He even remembered the smallest details from our previous meal, including exactly how I preferred my egg whites and which berries I liked. Those may seem like little things, but that level of attention and genuine care is what turns good service into truly memorable hospitality. Eddie is an incredible representation of Hotel Valley Ho and the level of service your brand strives to provide. He deserves to be recognized and praised for the experience he creates for his guests. We will absolutely remember him when we think about our stay in Scottsdale!"
