PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix's Camelback East corridor, a 1926 Spanish Colonial Revival mansion built by Cunning Hamilton as a private winter residence now anchors one of Arizona's most historically grounded resort properties. Royal Palms Resort and Spa grew outward from that original hacienda over the following decades, and the bones of Hamilton's vision — warm ochre stucco, clay barrel-tile roofing, arched doorways draped in bougainvillea, and a cobblestone motor court centered on a tiered stone fountain — remain the defining architectural gesture. The images confirm how closely the property has held to that inheritance: the mountain looms directly behind the entrance facade, an almost theatrical backdrop that no amount of resort engineering could manufacture. Inside, the interiors draw on the Spanish Colonial vocabulary without straining toward period recreation. Guest rooms carry exposed wooden ceiling beams, arched Moorish-influenced headboards in dark-painted wood, sisal-weave carpeting, and deep-red drapery against cream walls — materials warm enough for desert winters, spare enough to avoid folkloric excess. The restaurant, T. Cook's, unfolds beneath cathedral-pitched ceilings supported by painted timber trusses, its floor laid with hand-painted encaustic cement tiles and its wrought-iron orb chandeliers anchoring a dining room that moves between Mexican Colonial and Andalusian reference points with ease. Around the pool, brick-columned pergolas strung with striped cabana drapes continue the language of the original estate at leisure scale.

"Pro: The resort grounds are absolutely beautiful. Cons: The actual rooms are pretty outdated and didn't meet our expectations in terms of cleanliness - we found a piece of used chewing gum sitting on a ledge next to the bathtub. We had to call front desk to check on status of our luggage after waiting more than 30 minutes for it to be delivered to room upon arrival. We arranged for luggage to be picked up from room at check-out, but no one came so we had to lug everything ourselves."

"Charming property with historic architecture. The entire property needs a refresh while keeping the artchitecture in tact. Rooms smell musty/ moldy, chair in room is filthy , carpet smells. There is also some mold. Staff is OK. The only great thing is the breakfast ."

"There were some bright spots to our stay, but overall, it did not live up to the expectations of a five‑star or Michelin‑level resort. The property is priced like a luxury destination, yet the experience felt closer to a 3.5 or 4 star hotel. Our room was quite dated and had stains in the shower that resembled mold. The beds were not comfortable and were oddly small. Our group had two rooms, and throughout the stay the hotel struggled to keep track of who was in which room. We dealt with repeated key issues, and maintenance was even sent to the wrong room late at night. The gym is very small with limited equipment. The spa was the biggest disappointment: a small and not very luxe relaxation lounge, shabby and cramped layout of the locker room. My massage was the worst I’ve ever received, and my friends were also unhappy with theirs. The quality does not justify the pricing, especially when there are excellent spas at other hotels nearby. The pool area is charming but lacked enough chairs during busy times, especially with wedding groups on property. It felt like the hotel was very understaffed for the occupancy level. On a positive note, the grounds are beautiful, breakfast was delicious, and service at breakfast and at the pool—especially from Christian—was wonderful."

"This resort is really spectacular. It's quiet and intimate. I stayed there by myself for business and it was perfect for getting away from the crowds and hustle. It's really like an oasis in the desert. The food is outstanding and they have the friendliest staff."
