PB hotel design editorial

At the foot of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix's Camelback East corridor, a 1926 Spanish Colonial Revival mansion built by Cunning Hamilton as a private winter residence now anchors one of Arizona's most historically grounded resort properties. Royal Palms Resort and Spa grew outward from that original hacienda over the following decades, and the bones of Hamilton's vision — warm ochre stucco, clay barrel-tile roofing, arched doorways draped in bougainvillea, and a cobblestone motor court centered on a tiered stone fountain — remain the defining architectural gesture. The images confirm how closely the property has held to that inheritance: the mountain looms directly behind the entrance facade, an almost theatrical backdrop that no amount of resort engineering could manufacture. Inside, the interiors draw on the Spanish Colonial vocabulary without straining toward period recreation. Guest rooms carry exposed wooden ceiling beams, arched Moorish-influenced headboards in dark-painted wood, sisal-weave carpeting, and deep-red drapery against cream walls — materials warm enough for desert winters, spare enough to avoid folkloric excess. The restaurant, T. Cook's, unfolds beneath cathedral-pitched ceilings supported by painted timber trusses, its floor laid with hand-painted encaustic cement tiles and its wrought-iron orb chandeliers anchoring a dining room that moves between Mexican Colonial and Andalusian reference points with ease. Around the pool, brick-columned pergolas strung with striped cabana drapes continue the language of the original estate at leisure scale.

"I booked via Amex FHR. We were "upgraded" to a spa suite but they requested I pay an extra $200 per night for this "luxurious suite". The suite was a joke. The walls and floor were scratched and there were numerous paint chips and wood scratches throughout the room. The last straw was silverfish in the bed! The room was in dire need of maintenance and repair. The room should not have been rented in its current condition. I paid $800 for one night in this "luxurious suite." I was appalled and surprised that this hotel is part of the Amex FHR program!"

"My husband and I wanted to explore Scottsdale and take a short trip for his birthday. We weren't sure what to expect but it turned out to be such a lovely, hacienda-luxury type feel to our stay. The staff was super friendly and the property, while maze like in a good way, was stunning with the flora and fauna. Several functions were happening that weekend but did not interfere with our plans; on the other hand we were able to admire how the facility handled the events and set them up. The pool was lovely and we visited the hot tub twice. The restaurant and bar were wonderful with excellent food and drinks. We would not hesitate to recommend Royal Palms as a destination."

"This resort is a must see! The hotel property feels like it's been taken straight from a Tuscan villa in Italy. The grounds were immactulately kept, the rooms were perfect and the staff - they made us feel like the only guests there. We were able to walk by two weddings as well - and you could see that the attention to detail spans well beyond just a guest staying on-site. This hotel is truly a must see!"

"Overall, this is an elegant, relaxed hotel in a fantastic location. It is certainly on the pricey side, but the service is excellent—especially housekeeping—and the manager, Taylor, was very kind and helpful in finding us the perfect room. The atmosphere is calm, upscale, and unpretentious, and we especially enjoyed breakfast in the beautiful dining room, as well as morning soaks in the outdoor hot tub. As a runner, I also appreciated the great nearby routes (ask the front desk for a map). My only minor critique is that the property could benefit from a renovation or upgrade; while already nice, Hyatt could modernize it to fully bring out its elegance and add some expected conveniences—though that may come with higher room rates. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would gladly return."
