PB hotel design editorial

Pressed into the red granite flank of Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley, where the rock face drops sharply toward the valley floor, the buildings that make up Sanctuary Camelback Mountain were conceived as a continuation of the geology rather than an interruption of it. The resort's spa building, designed by Swaback Partners in a language of rammed-earth walls, deep overhangs, and steel-framed curtain glass, steps down the slope in a series of horizontal planes that mirror the mountain's own stratified face. At dusk, as the images here show, the illuminated interiors glow against the darkening sandstone in a way that makes the architecture feel less like construction and more like something excavated. The 98 casitas and suites — spread across the lower grounds and the mountain-facing ridge — carry a restrained desert modernism inside: black steel four-poster bed frames, wide-plank light oak flooring, Barcelona-adjacent lounge chairs in white leather, and walls kept to warm taupe so that the framed desert light through floor-to-ceiling windows does the decorative work. The restaurant, Elements, channels the same sensibility through a tongue-and-groove timber ceiling, dark stone columns, and wraparound glazing that frames Camelback's profile like a painting no art program could improve on. The infinity pool terrace, with its stucco cabana pavilion and raked gravel surround, completes a property where the Sonoran landscape functions less as backdrop and more as primary material.

"As a veteran health professional, I chose this resort/spa to acclimatize myself to Phoenix before volounteering for the World Parkinson Congress . I stepped into the most exquisite architecturally designed resort à la Frank Lloyd Wright set into the base of the towering red rock formations of the camelback mountain . The cohesiveness ,the grace , the consummate professionalism and the understated elegance of this staff made this experience exceptional. I would be remiss if I didn’t detail ALLLL of it . Intially , I reserved a CBD oil massage followed by dinner. It was so beyond outstanding - I cancelled my other plans only to rebook the identical experience again . I am 71 and have NEVER done this before . Dinner served by Shea, Ali , Fabian Shari ,Joel and drinks by Jay and Hurley -Each in their own way took incredible care of me - which is more then remarkable since I was a tourist and not a regular .The sushi created by chef Ricky was simply outstanding , the margeritas fabulous, the carnitas by chef Daniel divine -the lemon tart tooooooo goood. This was followed by the spa experience - Daniele and Kaylie received me so warmly - Kelly and Haydn were absolutely top notch masseurs - my body benefitted from the CBD oil massage- I felt so rejuvenated and relaxed . The environment throughout this facility is maintained pristinely - I feel so very privileged to have lived this moment ❤️"

"I will never go back to this place ever. Valet RUNS THIS PLACE and if you try to park here, they'll make you park down at the bottom of the hill and walk back up in the heat. Make sure you're not "rude" or they'll throw you off the property!!!!! Manager says they were "at capacity". Really? and what does that even mean when the parking lot is not even half full? Hey Sanctuary, not everyone likes their car beat up and riffled through by valet. Mother-in-law‘s 90th birthday RUINED!"

"We have stayed at Camelback in the past and this experience was NOTHING like our trips a few years ago. The place has become completely run down, pool experience was obviously catering only to the business meeting that was there and we felt ignored, room was filthy (see pictures) and there was no turn down service, wall paper was ripped...I could go on but certainly not worth anything CLOSE to the price we payed. Will not return which is a shame since it used to be such a wonderful place."

"A truly amazing experience! Sanctuary delivered on all its holiday promises. There are several pools to enjoy. Tennis, pickleball, a spa that I heard guests rave about, excellent restaurant with top notch service, daily room maintenance and turn down service, and some of the friendliest employees I have experienced at a resort. On top of that, the other guests were very friendly too and the resort didn't have a snooty vibe even though it is priced at a level that would have you expecting one. The location is great - easy to get to desert hikes, Scottsdale attractions, and lots of restaurants within driving distance. The rooms are extremely clean, quiet, and have cozy beds. If there is any downside to this resort it is that poolside meal and drink service was slow. And that wasn't the servers fault at all, she was usually the only one serving the entire pool area. She still offered friendly service even as she struggled to keep up with the volume of orders."

"I was honestly disappointed as soon as I walked in. The photos felt misleading—the only standout was the entrance and renovated bathrooms. The room had an odor and felt more like a cinder block cell than a cozy, luxury space. I barely slept because birds were loud starting around 3am. The exterior looks run down, and the views overlook rundown rooftops that take away from the experience. People were nice but For $2300+ only 2 nights, it didn’t feel worth it and I regretted the booking pretty quickly."
