PB hotel design editorial

Pressed into the red granite flank of Camelback Mountain in Paradise Valley, where the rock face drops sharply toward the valley floor, the buildings that make up Sanctuary Camelback Mountain were conceived as a continuation of the geology rather than an interruption of it. The resort's spa building, designed by Swaback Partners in a language of rammed-earth walls, deep overhangs, and steel-framed curtain glass, steps down the slope in a series of horizontal planes that mirror the mountain's own stratified face. At dusk, as the images here show, the illuminated interiors glow against the darkening sandstone in a way that makes the architecture feel less like construction and more like something excavated. The 98 casitas and suites — spread across the lower grounds and the mountain-facing ridge — carry a restrained desert modernism inside: black steel four-poster bed frames, wide-plank light oak flooring, Barcelona-adjacent lounge chairs in white leather, and walls kept to warm taupe so that the framed desert light through floor-to-ceiling windows does the decorative work. The restaurant, Elements, channels the same sensibility through a tongue-and-groove timber ceiling, dark stone columns, and wraparound glazing that frames Camelback's profile like a painting no art program could improve on. The infinity pool terrace, with its stucco cabana pavilion and raked gravel surround, completes a property where the Sonoran landscape functions less as backdrop and more as primary material.

Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, A Gurney's Resort & Spa Reviews

"A truly amazing experience! Sanctuary delivered on all its holiday promises. There are several pools to enjoy. Tennis, pickleball, a spa that I heard guests rave about, excellent restaurant with top notch service, daily room maintenance and turn down service, and some of the friendliest employees I have experienced at a resort. On top of that, the other guests were very friendly too and the resort didn't have a snooty vibe even though it is priced at a level that would have you expecting one. The location is great - easy to get to desert hikes, Scottsdale attractions, and lots of restaurants within driving distance. The rooms are extremely clean, quiet, and have cozy beds. If there is any downside to this resort it is that poolside meal and drink service was slow. And that wasn't the servers fault at all, she was usually the only one serving the entire pool area. She still offered friendly service even as she struggled to keep up with the volume of orders."

"I was honestly disappointed as soon as I walked in. The photos felt misleading—the only standout was the entrance and renovated bathrooms. The room had an odor and felt more like a cinder block cell than a cozy, luxury space. I barely slept because birds were loud starting around 3am. The exterior looks run down, and the views overlook rundown rooftops that take away from the experience. People were nice but For $2300+ only 2 nights, it didn’t feel worth it and I regretted the booking pretty quickly."

"My spouse and I stayed for 3 nights on a couples getaway. We booked a spa patio casita, which was very nice - the bathroom was large and well designed, and the room felt spacious with a nice seating area. All the spa rooms are very close to the central amenities and the buildings appear a bit newer than the ones higher up. However, you are overlooking the parking lot being lower down (though it is mostly blocked when you're actually on the patio). The highlights of the stay were the food at Elements, and the spa facility. The sound meditation class was nice, and the facial and massage both very good treatments. The bellmen were so friendly and offered to pick us up from dinner in the house car which was appreciated. While we enjoyed our weekend, I don't think the price matches the experience. The service at Jade bar was consistently slow, the restaurant host stand was usually unstaffed so we'd be waiting around, there was no welcome beverage or turn down treat, housekeeping appeared to start service one day but never completed it even after I asked for them to come back while we were at dinner. The pool area is pleasant but nothing special. The view from the infinity pool is looking at the top of a building, and the loungers don't have any padding unless you pay more for the cabana ones. By 11am, there were no chairs available at the pool. The yoga teacher was nice but seemed to just go through her own practice without paying attention to the handful of people in the class to offer modifications. The resort felt quiet during the breakfast hours, but the rest of the day and through the evening it felt very busy - there were corporate groups, a wedding, and people that just come for the bar and dinner, or buy a day pass to the pool/spa. I think it's useful to know it's still an urban hotel and not a serene, quiet retreat. I wasn't surprised it's a wedding venue but was not expecting corporate groups. At $1200+ a night, I would just expect everything to run smoothly and see more of the consistently good service and small touches that have become standard at 5 star hotels."

"Excellent stay at the sanctuary. Our room was very nice. Comfortable bed, furnished deck, nice seating area and excellent bathroom. The staff were great all around. Nice gym and we had great massages in the very nice relaxing spa. Only complaint was that we had difficulty enjoying the pool because each day we went we were attacked by flying gnats. Don't know if its the time of year or what, but the Hotel should spray the area to make it comfortable for its guests. But for this, my review would have been 5 stars."

"First off to find the nail salon was very confusing but that wasn’t my entire issue. My main issue was they will convince you to try the Dazzle dry polish if you get Groupon of the deluxe pedicure please don’t listen when they say it’s just a $10 add on. It was a whole lie and I felt for my first experience that I was being lied to and it was hard to know if they were trustworthy after that since I go to pay and then I’m told it was a $35 add on. I emailed the management and nothing was done or told sorry on that experience… why does it seem so shady. Like I just don’t understand"
