PB hotel design editorial

Old Town Scottsdale's hospitality scene tilted decisively toward the urban when W Scottsdale arrived in 2008, planted within a mixed-use development along East Camelback Road that gave the brand something rare in the desert Southwest: a genuine street-level energy borrowed from city blocks rather than resort compounds. The six-storey glass-and-concrete structure, with its curtain-wall facades catching the Sonoran light, wraps around a raised pool deck that functions as the property's social engine — white cabanas, teak-slatted daybeds, and star-shaped umbrellas arranged around a rectangular lap pool that looks, from above, like a stage set for a very glamorous outdoor performance. Inside, the interiors negotiate between W Hotels' signature high-contrast urbanism and a nod to the surrounding desert. Guest rooms split into two distinct registers: some run teal accent walls behind walnut-framed platform beds with brass task lamps, cocktail-glass wall graphics keeping the mood deliberately playful; others deploy black steel canopy frames over low-slung beds, large-format pop-art roundels, and wide-plank oak flooring that tips toward the brand's harder-edged New York DNA. The rooftop bar, constructed around a retractable skylight with warm cedar-clad ceilings, cognac leather swivel chairs, live-edge stone tables, and an open wall folding toward the palm-lined pool terrace, captures the property's essential character — somewhere between nightclub, lounge, and desert pavilion, never quite committing to any one identity, which turns out to be exactly the point.

"Decent hotel walking distance to Old Town. Rooms super small and bed is in middle of room! Trendy hotel that becomes a nightclub at night. Young people partying into the morning in rooms/hall. Rooms not soundproof, you can hear everything. Skip this place if you actually want to sleep"

"Dried roaches in the “welcome lounge”. Very welcoming… the shop is very cute, cute things but couldn’t find anyone to help. The front desk team was very kind. The new restaurant Roman is very over priced for frozen foods. DoorDash or walk down the strip. Chaotic at all times. Drunk people everywhere, loud music everywhere, seemed very very trashy. Prostitution going down at the pool. You can’t sleep at night due to the clubs going on all night. Tried to go to the spa after being kept up all night by the clubs. Only amenity is the shower. Showers smell like pee. Roaches in the locker rooms. My massage was interrupted multiple times since they don’t have white noise machines in the halls and you can hear everything in the hall way. The nail stations are out in the open so you get no privacy during pedicures. Drunk people coming in and out of the side door, the receptionist talking about the staff and shopping is very upsetting when spending so much to relax. When bringing up the roaches the receptionist just laughed. The receptionists seem very immature and unprofessional. The pool is very creepy. There’s a giant mirror down to the driving port so everyone can look up at you in the pool and the pool isn’t deep enough to swim. Avoid the hotel, avoid the spa, avoid the restaurants. Poorly built, poorly managed, poorly run, poorly marketed. Either market to young drunk people or to business men but the two don’t mesh. This place is trashy and management should be applauded."

"This place is overpriced, unclean, unsafe, has low level staff, no real amenities and definitely not worth any of your money. Go to a real 5-star hotel instead of this dump!"

"Our group of 19 booked two tables (not cabanas) by the pool on a Saturday, and it was a blast. Great music, friendly (and yes, hot) servers, and solid service all around. Even the lobby staff were welcoming, so don’t be shy about showing up pool-ready. Now, two major ball-breakers: 1️⃣ The price tag. The two tables came with a $3,000 minimum spend, and nothing is included, not even a token appetizer or “thanks for keeping the Scottsdale economy booming.” Bottles start around $500, and while the ice, mixers, and cups kept flowing, the value definitely didn’t. 2️⃣ The pool temperature. It’s NOT HEATED!! Even on a sunny October day, the water was cold. This is really a significant detail that we expected based on the cost. The pool is not even that big. For the algorithm: this place is not kid-friendly on Saturdays,"

"If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I’ve never experienced such ridiculous and inconsistent treatment in my life. I was forced to check my hat for $10 because I “wasn’t a guest,” only to walk inside and see the place packed with people wearing backwards hats everywhere. So much for consistency. The security guards here are an absolute joke — rude, arrogant, and clearly more interested in flexing power than providing any kind of guest experience. They acted like complete douchebags and made the entire vibe hostile from the moment I arrived. Between the pointless policies, the obvious double standards, and the obnoxious staff, this is hands-down one of the worst hospitality experiences I’ve ever had. Save yourself the money and the headache — plenty of better spots in Scottsdale that won’t treat you like garbage."
