PB hotel design editorial

Where the Monterey Peninsula's coastal scrub gives way to white sand dunes and the open Pacific, the links landscape at Spanish Bay was always going to be the dominant design force. The Inn at Spanish Bay, which opened in 1987 as part of the Pebble Beach Resorts expansion, was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill to defer to that terrain rather than compete with it — low-slung hipped rooflines clad in warm earth tones, the massing broken into residential clusters that settle into the dune grass rather than rising above it. The 269 rooms are distributed across four-story buildings arranged to maximize ocean and fairway exposure, nearly every guest room carrying a private balcony and, in many configurations, a wood-burning fireplace that earns its keep given the coastal fog that rolls in most evenings. Interiors move between two registers visible in the images — one more recently refreshed, with maple-panel headboards, patterned wool carpet in sand and taupe, and x-base ottomans giving the rooms a calm, contemporary California cadence; another, older layer in the traditional wing favoring warm cream walls and deep plum drapery framing the sea. The wine bar anchors the social heart of the property with a stacked-stone fireplace, honeycomb wine racking, and leather club chairs on dark-stained floors — a deliberately lodge-like warmth calibrated against the wildness just outside. At dusk, the fire-pit terrace fills as a lone bagpiper walks the 18th fairway of the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed links course, a ritual that has become the inn's defining signature.

"My dad and I stayed here for 2 nights as part of his 75th birthday present with golf at Pebble and Spyglass. Definitely the most expensive place I've ever stayed but I knew that going in. The rooms were nice - beds were very comfortable, and the fireplace was a nice touch. There were a couple things not working in the room - the TV remote and one of the bed's reading lights. Service was generally pretty quick when we brought these up. The Food and Wine Festival was just wrapping up so there was a lot of activity around. Dinner at Peppoli's was good but very loud. Breakfast at Roy's was decent - and we were one of the only people in there. The bagpiper is a highlight. It wasn't the nicest place I've ever stayed, but I could see why it qualifies as a luxury hotel. One note: we were interested in the free Lexus 2 hour test drive, but didn't realize that you had to book it for certain time windows, which didn't match up with our schedule, so we skipped it."

"Stayed for 3 nights at this historic hotel in the pebble Beach area. They were going to tear down the hotel and golf course two days after we departed for an 15 month reno. Surprising because the place was pretty darn nice. Although we had booked a garden view room they somehow upgraded us to ocean view. It’s a beautiful, large hotel with great dining and other facilities. They shuttle you to all the golf courses and to The Lodge so very convenient. Really enjoyed our stay there."

"I was told when I got to the spa that the pool and outside were not available. I used the indoor facility while waiting for my massage. After my massage, the shuttle had just left. Liza (tall girl) at the front desk of the spa, said to wait inside since the shuttle driver comes inside. A couple of people came in and Liza saw me sitting there and didn’t tell me the driver had left. When I saw the time I asked and she said “oops he just left, you have to wait another 30 minutes for the next one”. No apologies or professionalism. I called the inn at Spanish bay where I was staying and I was left on hold on the phone for 7 minutes only to be told that I had to wait. No customer service for such an expensive and frankly over-rated hotel. Will not be staying here again. It’s sad since it’s a beautiful place but a lot of the staff are not professional…the valet are the ones that seems to be nicer and professional."

"Terrific hotel, beautiful entrance and lobby and you can’t beat sitting outside when the bagpiper comes by! For this price, you expect perfection and on occasion the service can slip, but being this popular comes with some busy times and it’s understandable. The rooms are clean, with a beautiful fireplace and the views of the ocean and course are unbeatable. Being a PB resort comes with shuttle service, and great concierge who can design exquisite vacations. A great place!"
