Coastal-restrainedheirloom

PB hotel design editorial

White stucco walls, steel-framed casement windows, and a porthole detail punched into the upper facade give Villa Mara Carmel the quiet authority of a Monterey Colonial residence that has always known exactly what it is. Set within Carmel-by-the-Sea's famously design-conscious village grid, where building codes have long preserved a domestic scale that most coastal California towns surrendered decades ago, the property works within those constraints rather than against them — the low-slung rooflines, flagstone forecourt, and cast-iron fire bowl visible from the garden all suggesting a private home that happens to have been opened to guests. Inside, the interiors sustain that fiction with considerable skill. The common sitting room retains its original dark-stained scissor-truss ceiling, which anchors a composition of wide-plank white oak floors, a herringbone-tiled fireplace surround beneath a chunky raw timber mantel, and loose groupings of cane-back chairs alongside a tufted sofa in blue floral fabric. Guest rooms shift the palette toward warmer sand tones — biscuit-coloured walls, blush-printed upholstered headboards, rift-cut oak cabinetry with brass hardware, and paired club chairs in ivory bouclé positioned to catch the coastal light through French doors. The cumulative effect is closer to a well-inherited California beach house than to a curated boutique hotel, which is precisely the point.

"An exceptional stay from start to finish! The hotel is beautiful, spotless, and in a fantastic location. The staff was warm, professional, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. George is the Propery manager and makes your stay memorable. Our room was comfortable, elegant, and had everything we needed. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable experience."

"Villa Mara is just a delight to stay. Feels like a luxurious hospitality experience without the pretentious, over the top feel that’s too much. Villa Mara somehow balances top tier service with a personable and tasteful touch while still feeling spoiled. Everything is just perfectly placed and curated to create an sense of ease and leisure. My wife and I came here to celebrate our honeymoon and we couldn't have picked a better place to do so. They made us feel celebrated with champagne, flowers and a special note. The breakfast in bed was stellar with the best almond croissant we’ve ever had. The slice of cake was just a lovely touch when hanging out by the fire with a glass of wine. The pleasant aroma of Sental 33 throughout the room and shower products made you feel engulfed in luxury. The beautiful landscaping of cacti and ivy made you feel transported to a different country. It was an intimate, private experience but also had a communal atmosphere at the same time. The attention to detail really does make the experience while maintaining a cool personality and style. Very special thing they got going on. Villa Mara helped us to fully relax after our wedding and settle into being married. Thank you for this and we will be back in the future! Drew and Julianna"

"Pros: Beautiful property, smells amazing, comfortable beds, heated floors, firepit areas, and delicious wine (your first glass is complimentary). My favorite part was the turndown service. We would leave for dinner and come back to fresh water, cookies, slippers perfectly placed next to our bed, the room tidied up, bed made, curtains closed, and lamps perfectly dimmed. Other pros: they brought us blankets and a snack tray to enjoy by the fire, and the staff was very friendly. They even offered to bring chairs and blankets down to the beach for us. Upon arrival I notice there was no floor length mirror so they bright one in for me. We stayed in the Lobos room. Cons: The room is small and doesn’t have a lot of storage, although we made do. We only had breakfast one of the four days. I thought the menu options were thoughtful for a continental type of breakfast. My husband on the other hand thought that it wasn’t very substantial and the options were limited. I’m not sure this is a con for some people but it can feel somewhat “high society” which is very much the vibe of Carmel. Think designer clothing, luxury cars, and obvious wealth. Overall we had a great first-time trip to Carmel and we have no regrets choosing Villa Mara. This is a one and done destination for us. Tip: check what time sunset is and head to the beach to catch the most beautiful sunset after dinner. This was a highlight and the beach is so close."

"I recently had the pleasure of staying at Villa Mara for a few days celebrating the birthday of my partner. Upon arrival we were greeted by the welcoming staff and an evening cocktail, which after the long drive from Los Angeles, was much needed. George, Olivia, Johnathan, Andre, and Roxy took care of us at every turn, whether it was helping us with dinner recommendations and reservations, or going out daily to pick up gluten free treats for my girlfriend, they all made us feel right at home. So many other hotels have stock standard artwork in the communal spaces and rooms, not Villa Mara. Each of the pieces feel one of kind and well considered. I absolutely loved this about the spaces. If you're wanting to stay in Carmel, just steps away from the beach, look no further. I can't wait to return for another visit!"

"VIlla Mara is a very nice small hotel a block from the beautiful beach in Carmel By The Sea. The rooms are comfortable and nice and the location is great. There is not really a kitchen at the hotel though, so food options are quite limited. Being next to the prettiest beach more than makes up for that!"
