PB hotel design editorial

Straddling the boundary between West Hollywood and the broader Los Angeles basin, two concrete towers clad in warm stone-toned fins rise above a courtyard where native grasses, desert yuccas, and a monumental carved-wood numeral announce the brand's commitment to landscape as architecture. 1 Hotel West Hollywood, which opened in 2019 across 285 rooms and suites spread over fifteen floors, was developed by SH Hotels & Resorts with architecture by Gensler and interiors conceived around the brand's signature biophilic framework — the idea that a hotel can function as a living system rather than a static object. The courtyard planting scheme, visible in the images, folds California high desert flora into a considered ground-level arrival sequence, with a large-scale wire mesh sculpture suspended overhead adding an unexpected note of levity. Inside, the rooms carry exposed board-formed concrete ceilings left entirely unfinished, a deliberately raw gesture that anchors the warmth below it — reclaimed wood headboards, distressed oak benches, white linen slipcovers, and dark oval tables that could have come from a Malibu canyon house assembled over decades. A Julius Shulman monograph on the coffee table is not incidental; it frames the hotel's self-positioning within a California modernist lineage. The rooftop pool deck runs long and narrow against the building's facade, teak decking and rattan lounge chairs arranged toward panoramic views across the grid of Los Angeles stretching south. The rooftop bar, warmed by amber velvet stools and fringe-trimmed pendants, folds open through steel-framed bifold glazing onto a terrace dense with potted palms.

"Stayed here over New Year’s Eve for the Rose Bowl expecting a high design, luxury experience aligned with the brand’s reputation. That was not my experience. An item valued at approximately $6,000 went missing from our room. What followed was sloppy and completely unprofessional. The incident report was taken by security on a blank piece of printer paper in mechanical pencil. There was no structure, no professionalism, and no meaningful follow up. After multiple attempts over several months, the hotel has now stopped responding entirely. We gave them every opportunity to handle this privately, including requesting a basic goodwill accommodation. They did nothing. This is not just a service issue. This is a brand integrity issue. If you are choosing this property based on reputation, you should understand how situations like this are actually handled."

"My partner and I celebrated our anniversary at the 1 hotel is West Hollywood. We were met with the most friendly staff members. Spencer Hector helped arrange our stay and was extremely helpful in accommodating our celebratory day. We were also met with a bottle of Bubbly and Macaroons, it was the luxury vacation stay we both needed! The hotel was immaculate, modern, and so cozy. We love the sustainability of the entire property. There was even live plant in our room which made it feel like a luxury apartment rather than a hotel room. Not to mention the breathtaking 180 views of the city. This is a hotel we will seek out every time we are in the area. Thanks for treating us like family 1 Hotel WEHO! We can’t wait to return. ⸻"

"My stay at the 1 Hotel West Hollywood was a strange mix of good and bad. You’d better love the pseudo-industrial, “nature-inspired” decor (lots of plants, rustic-looking wood furniture, poured concrete ceilings, reminders every 5 feet of how much the love recycling) because it’s everywhere. There’s no sound deadening, so it was hard to rest in my room with housekeeping knocking loudly on every door down the hall. (The bed was extremely comfortable though.) I much preferred the scene at the ground floor lobby bar to Harriet’s Rooftop. The rooftop offers incredible views of downtown LA, but on a Saturday night it gets extremely loud, packed with people, and oddly claustrophobic-feeling for being partly open-air. The rooftop staff were very professional, and I got the sense that they wanted to be friendly but were being pressured to keep up a pretense of exclusivity. I have no idea why—you’re not going to find any A-listers at Harriet’s. Breakfast at the lobby restaurant was excellent, and the staff there were highly professional as well. In sum, I can see how the 1 Hotel appeals to certain types, and parts of my stay were good, but overall this place didn’t do it for me."

"This was my first time at the Hotel and I was there to work in the cafe. From the moment I walked in the environment was welcoming and calming. However it was the staff who really made the experience. The hostess at the restaurant (I forgot her name) was incredibly pleasant and excited to have me. However, Tasha made my day. She was patient, made great suggestions and went over and beyond. She walked me through the garden and made sure I’d want to come back. Chef Ginger was introduced to me and the breakfast and coffee was quality for sure. I’m so happy I found a beautiful place to work and look forward to staying as a guest!"
