PB hotel design editorial

Straddling the boundary between West Hollywood and the broader Los Angeles basin, two concrete towers clad in warm stone-toned fins rise above a courtyard where native grasses, desert yuccas, and a monumental carved-wood numeral announce the brand's commitment to landscape as architecture. 1 Hotel West Hollywood, which opened in 2019 across 285 rooms and suites spread over fifteen floors, was developed by SH Hotels & Resorts with architecture by Gensler and interiors conceived around the brand's signature biophilic framework — the idea that a hotel can function as a living system rather than a static object. The courtyard planting scheme, visible in the images, folds California high desert flora into a considered ground-level arrival sequence, with a large-scale wire mesh sculpture suspended overhead adding an unexpected note of levity. Inside, the rooms carry exposed board-formed concrete ceilings left entirely unfinished, a deliberately raw gesture that anchors the warmth below it — reclaimed wood headboards, distressed oak benches, white linen slipcovers, and dark oval tables that could have come from a Malibu canyon house assembled over decades. A Julius Shulman monograph on the coffee table is not incidental; it frames the hotel's self-positioning within a California modernist lineage. The rooftop pool deck runs long and narrow against the building's facade, teak decking and rattan lounge chairs arranged toward panoramic views across the grid of Los Angeles stretching south. The rooftop bar, warmed by amber velvet stools and fringe-trimmed pendants, folds open through steel-framed bifold glazing onto a terrace dense with potted palms.

"Booked via AMEX Fine Hotels and Resorts. Overall, we had a very good stay and the hotel succeeds at what it is trying to be: stylish, modern, wellness-oriented and very aesthetically designed. The location in West Hollywood is excellent, the decor throughout the property is beautiful, and many of the staff were warm and helpful. That said, for a hotel at this price point, there were several operational inconsistencies that stopped this from being a 5-star experience for us. The biggest issue related to breakfast/service communication. Prior to arrival — and again twice during our stay — reception confirmed that a small takeaway breakfast would be arranged for one morning due to an early departure preventing us from using the AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts breakfast benefit. Unfortunately this was never followed through despite multiple confirmations and reminders. Housekeeping was also inconsistent. After several days of leaving reusable water bottles untouched, housekeeping suddenly discarded four of them, including one personal bottle which was clearly not rubbish and was left on the bedside table rather than near a bin. Staff did later say we could take bottled water from the minibar as compensation, however we were then incorrectly charged for two bottles at checkout. This was quickly rectified, but only because I happened to review the bill while on the way to LAX. There were also a few room/design practicality issues: * the pool loses sun surprisingly early (around 2-3pm) * breakfast / food options become repetitive after a few days * TV casting functionality is poor (AirPlay support would improve the experience significantly) * windows do not open, meaning you are reliant on fairly noisy AC * plug/socket placement is limited, especially in rooms with two double beds where multiple guests are sharing very few bedside charging points We also experienced an issue on our final day where our room keys automatically deactivated at 12pm despite a confirmed 4pm late checkout through Fine Hotels & Resorts, requiring us to return to reception to regain room access. Quickly rectified, but additional friction. None of these issues individually ruined the stay, and overall we still enjoyed the hotel and I would likely return. However, collectively they prevented the experience from fully matching the premium positioning and pricing of the property."
