PB hotel design editorial

Few images in American hospitality carry more cultural weight than that pink stucco facade rising behind a canopy of banana palms on Sunset Boulevard. When the Beverly Hills Hotel opened in 1912 — two years before the city of Beverly Hills itself was incorporated — architect Elmer Grey set it within twelve acres of gardens as a Mission Revival landmark, its terracotta roof tiles and arched loggias establishing a California vernacular that the surrounding neighbourhood would spend decades trying to imitate. The signature green-and-white striped porte-cochère, visible in the entrance image with its radiating canvas canopy and scarlet carpet, has become so thoroughly embedded in the iconography of Hollywood glamour that it functions less as architecture than as shorthand for a particular strain of American fantasy. The 210 rooms and bungalows were refreshed under Dorchester Collection's stewardship, with interiors drawing on a palette of warm champagne, crimson ikat, and sapphire blue — gold-leafed four-poster beds and tufted velvet headboards giving the guest rooms an atmosphere closer to a well-appointed Bel Air estate than a hotel. The pool terrace, surrounded by towering Washingtonia palms and furnished with white-framed chaises in candy-stripe and coral, anchors the property's famously social outdoor life. The Polo Lounge, with its forest-green lacquered columns, tartan carpet, and dark-stained bentwood chairs, remains among the most recognisable bar rooms in Los Angeles — a room where the furniture has barely shifted in fifty years, and doesn't need to.

About

The Beverly Hills Hotel carries the knowledge of a place that has always been central to the city's story. For over a century, it has shaped the mood of Beverly Hills through arrivals, meetings, and moments that become part of something larger. From the soft pink of its stucco walls to the stretch of the red-carpet arrival, it remains one of the most recognisable hotels in the world. The hotel's iconic design holds a place in our collective memory, known across the globe. Banana leaves stand sentry along the walls. Sunshine knows its path across the famous cabanas. The candy-striped ceiling of the Polo Lounge carries voices across generations, from breakfast meetings to infamous dinners. In the garden bungalows, time softens into stories that live far beyond the gates. Each day here moves to its own tempo. The Fountain Coffee Room holds its beloved place in the city's routine, with its curved counter and milkshakes remembered across generations.

"We arrived early for our check in and understood our room was not ready. W mentioned that we had booked a room for 3 and our daughter would be joining us the next day and we would like to order a roll away for her friend (which we were happy to pay for). We also asked if any balcony rooms were available. The front desk attendant was very nice and said she would try for a balcony room. We had a very lengthy lunch and then returned to inquire about our room. We were jet lagged and would have been happy to just get our swim attire and head to the pool, but they kept saying our room was almost ready. After an hour of waiting in the lobby (2:55pm), she came and said she would take us to our room. I was hopeful maybe our wait granted a balcony. When we arrived at the room, it was not what I expected, or as nice as the basic room we had stayed in previously. The room looks out at the rooftop of the lobby entrance and is noisy and not at all aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, there is a 4 foot chaise lounge that I guess the third person is supposed to sleep in, as the room advertises that it sleeps 3. We requested 2 roll aways. She then called back to inform that would be $500. Honestly, the cost doesn’t bother me as much as the situation. I’m pretty sure we were given one of the worst rooms, which she claimed was an upgrade. My “basic” room the last time was far superior. I’m just sad and disappointed as our last stay here was fantastic and led to our return."

"Always a great experience at BHH. Staff is excellent and having the Polo Lounge as a dining option will never get old. The pool is iconic the pink entrance and lobby stay fresh. The rooms are surprisingly high tech and extremely luxurious. Housekeeping is great, and you won’t want to leave!"

"Unfortunately my stay here last week was not good at all. Starting with the front desk lady being rude and unwelcoming to the room service and restaurant service being slow. I still love the rooms and hotel. This was my 3rd time staying here. The staff needs to smile and hustle a bit."

"SKIP IT 😬 I’ve been coming to The Beverly Hills Hotel for a little while now because it used to feel like pure magic. Every detail was thoughtful and every stay felt special. Unfortunately, that magic seems to be fading. The bedding, which was once one of the best parts of the experience, now feels cheap and outdated. The duvet is paper thin, the pillows are flat, and the comfort level is nothing like it used to be. I even tried calling to get new bedding but after waiting so long and being transferred around, I finally just gave up. Service overall has slipped dramatically. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to get a response, even after multiple calls, whether you’re asking for basic amenities or trying to get room service trays picked up. Small details that made this place iconic like the branded key cards and attention to detail have completely disappeared. Everything feels stripped down and generic now. There’s also construction everywhere, which ruins the peaceful atmosphere. Yet despite all of this, they’ve added a mandatory 20 percent service fee even as the service itself has sharply declined. I used to come here to unwind and recharge, but sadly, The Beverly Hills Hotel no longer feels luxurious or special. Until the renovations are done and the service improves, I’d recommend staying somewhere else."
