PB hotel design editorial

Beneath a canopy of century-old olive trees, a courtyard pool sits so still it mirrors the white stucco walls rising around it — and it's hard to believe that what frames it was, not long ago, a forgettable 1950s roadside motel. Cara Hotel, which arrived in Los Feliz in 2020, came out of a radical reworking of the former Coral Sands Motel by Los Angeles interior design firm Bishop Pass. The transformation stripped the structure back, removing the original façade and roof to insert a 16-foot vaulted lobby ceiling and reshape the central courtyard into something closer to a Provençal or Moroccan retreat than anything California hospitality had attempted at this scale. Terracotta amphorae anchor the pool's edges, teak and wrought-iron seating clusters between the palms, and sheer linen curtains billow along the ground-floor corridors — all of it pulling toward a Mediterranean sensibility that feels unhurried and genuinely considered. Inside the 60 rooms, Bishop Pass maintained the same restraint. Herringbone oak floors, wainscoting rendered in bright white, and textured bouclé headboards establish a quiet domesticity that avoids the usual boutique hotel self-consciousness. Wrought-iron side tables with scrolled bases sit beside cylindrical oak cabinets and low boucle slipper chairs — a mix that suggests a well-traveled collector rather than a mood board. Light-filled prints of beach scenes hang in simple natural wood frames, and French doors open onto balconies and the courtyard below, keeping the indoor-outdoor connection constant throughout the property.

"This is the third time I have stayed at the Cara this year. The location near Los Feliz is excellent and I don't think there is anything else like this around. I have family living nearby and was thrilled to come across this hidden gem - a chic, charming, boutique-type yet comfy hotel. Its pricing is reasonable for the type of hotel and the level of service. The staff are incredibly warm and friendly, they make you feel like you are the best guest they've ever had. The public spaces are beautiful with a very stylish, elegant, yet comfortable aesthetic. When I walk in, I immediately feel relaxed and happy. The rooms have the same vibe and are very clean. The beds have been great, the European style AC in the room is excellent. As a solo traveler, I have stayed in the 'Snug'; it has everything you need and makes it even more reasonable. The food at the restaurant is delicious and the bar is cool and fun, all of it in an indoor-outdoor setting. I don't come with a car, but they do have valet parking at $38/night. There are grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants nearby; Griffith Park is up the street and, while I've never used it, the subway is one block away. The hotel description says it's in Los Feliz, but to really be in Los Feliz, on Vermont and Hillhurst, it's at least a 20 minute walk. A few minor drawbacks - this last visit was during a heatwave and the hum of the AC motors that are outside was very loud and nonstop. I've learned to bring eye masks and earplugs on my trips and I was very glad to have them. It is a small hotel in the middle of the busy city, so there is street noise, etc, but it is minor. Because of the 'clean and spare' aesthetic, there are not a lot of places to put your stuff in the room/bathroom even when staying in the normal king-size bedroom. The heatwave also made it a bit difficult to enjoy the restaurant. Given that hotter temps are more prevalent these days, more fans for the restaurant and even the bar might be nice. This is not a hotel I would bring kids to, it's very grown up, with nothing geared toward children. Overall, I really do love this place - it is like entering an oasis - and will stay here every time I am in town!"

"Came here to see if this would be a good place to host my La Dolce Vita themed birthday party. Ok, from the outside, it is not impressive. It's located on a busy street, not a fantastic area. But, when you walk inside, it is very aesthetically pleasing. It feels more like a Mediterranean/Greek vibe than it does Amalfi Coast, but it's pretty regardless. It has a swimming pool in the middle of the courtyard, olive trees with twinkle lights, white plushy pillows in the seat of your chair. Food was impressive, but service was slow, and I absolutely hate when they don't come to clear dirty dishes off the table. This is a contender for my party though, I can see my guests really the vibes."

"I was in town for an event at AFI, so I felt so fortunate that I found this beautiful little gem. The location was perfect, not only for walking to the event, but for easy walking to coffee or markets, and accessing Griffith park, the Observatory and the Greek Theater! I sadly did not stay long enough to try the restaurant or bar on the property, but both had a gorgeously splendid atmosphere! I was a tad nervous about potential noise from the restaurant seating right outside my first floor room, but with my door and windows closed, it was perfectly quiet in my room! It was very still on the property when I got in after midnight and climbed into the wonderfully comfortable and cool bed. Even with the extreme heat advisory and being out most of the evening (so the AC was off), it was very pleasant. The best thing about my stay was the staff! They were all genuinely welcoming and accommodating. I would happily return and recommend this hotel! You will too!!"

"Staying next to the restaurant was louder than usual. During the last night, the smoke detector was going off for a low battery. I informed the front desk & nothing was done. I returned for the night & removed the detector. It was given to the front desk. Otherwise, great stay as always"
