PB hotel design editorial

At 850 Huntley Drive, a late Victorian craftsman cottage — shingle-gabled, white-balustraded, climbing a concrete plinth above the street — anchors the facade of Hotel 850 in a West Hollywood residential vernacular that feels genuinely at odds with the hotel typology behind it. The original structure, preserved as a street-facing gesture, gives way to a contemporary addition rising three floors above it, black steel pergolas and stucco parapets stepping up toward a rooftop terrace with unobstructed views across the West Hollywood skyline toward the Santa Monica Mountains. Inside, the interiors move between two registers with some fluency. Common spaces deploy dark vertical board-and-batten paneling against wide-plank white oak floors, a continuous velvet sectional in aged sage green anchoring a lounge that has the atmosphere of a well-appointed private screening room. Guest rooms are considerably lighter in disposition — natural grasscloth wallcovering, linen-toned Roman shades, and patterned block-print drapery framing black steel casement windows that open onto private balconies. Trestle-leg writing desks in pale oak, coral-rimmed round mirrors, and the occasional lit fireplace give individual rooms a calibrated domesticity that the modest scale — the property holds around 14 rooms across its floors — makes credible rather than contrived. The rooftop terrace, furnished with rattan armchairs in tropical-print fabric around a herringbone-tiled outdoor fireplace, delivers the kind of elevated West Hollywood afternoon that the original cottage facade promises in a quieter key.

"Stayed for a few nights for work in February. The hotel is in a good location. Their small rooms are really small, but if the hotel has larger rooms available they will upgrade Ambassador members, and they upgraded me part of the way through my stay. Breakfast was just pastries, but they were free. I would stay here again, primarily because of the good location."

"We had a lovely stay at Hotel 850 SVB from June 02-25 to June 04-25, and the room was very nice, making it a pleasant first visit. However, we were unexpectedly charged an amenity fee of $25.00 per night (totaling $50.00), which wasn’t mentioned on the website or in our confirmation. When we asked the staff, they explained it covers bikes, breakfast, and the honor bar. We never used the bikes, the breakfast was minimal (see attached photo), and the honor bar wine was poor quality with no service support. This lack of transparency and the unjustified fee left us disappointed. We’d love to recommend this hotel, but can’t until this is addressed. Hope management resolves this for future guests."

"Boutiques hotel in West Hollywood near shops and restaurants. More like an upscale B&B than hotel. Our room was small but clean and comfortable with lots of nice touches like a bar, refrigerator, big bathroom with great amenities, lots of hot water and surprisingly quiet given its near a busy area. The lounge area is inviting and there’s pastries, fruit, yogurt and coffee served in the morning. Staff are friendly and accommodating. There’s sufficient power plugs for charging and wifi is very good. Nice for a short stay or a longer vacation."

"Everything here is fantastic!! I was traveling for business and rely on a hotel to be my "home away from home" and this hotel did just that. The housekeepers are phenomenal (I've never commented on housekeeping in my life!) but they were truly special and did not miss one detail. Rooms are wonderful with thoughtful touches everywhere. Common spaces excellent and charming. European breakfast is lovely even though I never had any - I don't eat breakfast but went for a quick look one morning. Valets are all fabulous as well as hotel manager. The only critique and it's not important was the sweet, handsome (pretty eyes) front desk gentleman in the mornings is not a people person and seemed completely checked out and uninterested in talking to guests or offering any warmth or personality. The hotel is so FABULOUS, you won't even care!! I can't wait to go back!"
