PB hotel design editorial

At 850 Huntley Drive, a late Victorian craftsman cottage — shingle-gabled, white-balustraded, climbing a concrete plinth above the street — anchors the facade of Hotel 850 in a West Hollywood residential vernacular that feels genuinely at odds with the hotel typology behind it. The original structure, preserved as a street-facing gesture, gives way to a contemporary addition rising three floors above it, black steel pergolas and stucco parapets stepping up toward a rooftop terrace with unobstructed views across the West Hollywood skyline toward the Santa Monica Mountains. Inside, the interiors move between two registers with some fluency. Common spaces deploy dark vertical board-and-batten paneling against wide-plank white oak floors, a continuous velvet sectional in aged sage green anchoring a lounge that has the atmosphere of a well-appointed private screening room. Guest rooms are considerably lighter in disposition — natural grasscloth wallcovering, linen-toned Roman shades, and patterned block-print drapery framing black steel casement windows that open onto private balconies. Trestle-leg writing desks in pale oak, coral-rimmed round mirrors, and the occasional lit fireplace give individual rooms a calibrated domesticity that the modest scale — the property holds around 14 rooms across its floors — makes credible rather than contrived. The rooftop terrace, furnished with rattan armchairs in tropical-print fabric around a herringbone-tiled outdoor fireplace, delivers the kind of elevated West Hollywood afternoon that the original cottage facade promises in a quieter key.

"Great location in the heart of West Hollywood, walk to a ton of restaurants and bars. The hotel is small and is a converted old house with about 20 or so rooms. The room was comfortable and cute. The staff was all very friendly and they have wine in the lounge and pastries, coffee and OJ for breakfast."

"If you are a light sleeper avoid this hotel! All rooms either face San Vicente or are audible to San Vicente traffic. I was very disappointed with the very poor communication of the Manager who was not upfront about the incessant noise even after I asked multiple times before check in about needing a quiet room. He never disclosed that there were not quiet rooms in the hotel and I was given "an upgrade" to a room that face San Vincente even though I said my #1 priority was a quiet room even if it was small. Even a sleep sound, which they added, did not block the noise. I checked out with 3 hours sleep. The rooms are nicely appointed but I would never come back and think any guest who says they are a light sleeper should be told by the hotel team to stay elsewhere. HONESTY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE FIRST."

"I have been staying here for years. I love the location and I love the rooms-- even the smaller ones are well appointed and laid out. This visit disappointed me a bit: 1. No more honor bar. I used to LOVE to sit in the living room with a cocktail-- or on the roof deck. In its place is mediocre free wine from 5 to 7. Not being able to mix a nightcap when I get back in the evening --or whenever I want! is very disappointing. 2. The snacks in the living are all candy now. It would be fantastic to have something savory, like peanuts or pretzels... 3. I am a very frequent customer and I used to get upgraded when there was availability. No longer. during my last stay I knew the hotel wasn't very full but when I asked about an upgrade the gentleman at the front desk just said, "Yeah it doesn't work like that." How does it work?? This may be a sign that it is time for me to branch out...."

"Stayed for a few nights for work in February. The hotel is in a good location. Their small rooms are really small, but if the hotel has larger rooms available they will upgrade Ambassador members, and they upgraded me part of the way through my stay. Breakfast was just pastries, but they were free. I would stay here again, primarily because of the good location."
