PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into a canyon off Stone Canyon Road in the hills above Westwood, the twelve acres of mature gardens surrounding Hotel Bel-Air have always done as much design work as any interior. The property opened in 1946, converted from a 1920s real estate sales office for the Bel-Air Estates development into a low-slung collection of Mission Revival bungalows draped in bougainvillea and connected by stone-arched bridges over a swan lake. When Dorothy Draper's original interiors gave way to a major renovation completed in 2011 — a two-year closure overseen by Alexandra Champalimaud — the 103 rooms and suites were reimagined in a palette of ivory, champagne, and warm ebony, with bleached wood-plank ceilings, travertine tile floors, and custom geometric-print rugs anchoring beds dressed in layered cream linens. The French doors visible throughout open directly onto private terraces and garden courts, collapsing the boundary between room and landscape in a way that remains the property's defining spatial gesture. Champalimaud kept the hand-embroidered curtain valances and dark lacquered furniture that give the rooms a restrained California-Colonial character without drifting toward pastiche. The restaurant terrace, sheltered beneath a scalloped canvas canopy strung with wicker pendant lanterns and cooled by slow ceiling fans, extends into the gardens through dark steel-framed openings — a composition that manages formality and ease in equal measure. The kidney-shaped pool, framed by royal palms and terracotta-roofed pavilions, completes a setting that feels less like designed hospitality than a private estate that happens to welcome guests.

"I only intended to stay one night, however my other accommodation was disastrous, so I called the hotel at around 11:30 pm asking if they had my room available before my original arrival date, to which the gentleman said they did. I forgot his name, but he was a tall gentleman who I believe said he was a manager and works the overnight. They were kind enough to extend the original rate I booked and I received a complimentary upgrade as well! The spa was also very accommodating to a last minute treatment- I received an amazing 90-minute Swedish massage from Sabrina and it was the best! I will be back!"

"The pink palace is like a quiet oasis in the middle of Beverly Hills. You’ll feel tranquil and like you’re escaping once you enter Bel-Air. The walk across the bridge and the swan lake are a great way to be welcomed and the staff make it even better. The complex is shockingly large, with a great mix of rooms and walking paths. The rooms are clean, modern and high tech, and housekeeping is great. The restaurant and the patisserie are standouts. You’ll love Bel-Air!"

"Having just stayed in 12 luxury hotels (Bel Air, Peninsula Beverly Hills, Four Seasons Palm beach, Faena Miami beach, Waldorf Astoria Park city, W Aspen, St. Regis San Francisco, Waldorf Astoria Vegas, etc) around the USA, I have a fresh feel to review these hotels with great comparisons. This hotel had the second best service after Four Seasons Palm beach. Just a little better than Peninsula Beverly Hills too. The location is extremely secluded and private, but still only 10-20 minutes from Rodeo Drive by car. They have a house car that can drop you off there for free (if available). They had a small hick up picking us up from the airport, as the partner they use came a little late. They handled the situation just as I expected, with true professionalism. Also, we once mentioned that we liked the cookies we had for dessert at their restaurant, ever since we got 8 cookies to our room every night. That shows the level of service they operate at. The room was large and had a nice mix of classical american design and modernity. The hotel area is huge, feels like walking inside a small old spanish town. The rooms are spread out so well, that you barely see or hear any other people. The pool is large, and there are quite a few sunbeds. However, compared to Peninsula, there are many kids who play around, so its not quite as relaxing / high end. Also, there were no free refreshments provided. The breakfast was a bit disappointing, the waiting times were quite long, so if you dine between 9-10 am, you cannot finish the breakfast in less than an hour. Also, one morning we ordered a couple of dishes for both of us. Only 1 round arrived. We were in a hurry so we decided not to wait for longer. We asked for the check. The check included all the orderd 2 rounds of dishes. We reported that. The server then informed that he wanted to first see us finish the first round and then bring more. Thats something I do not appreciate. If I pay for the breakfast, I want that I order with no guestioning. Special thank you to Mariah from the concierge. She took exceptional care of us and was a lassive help for us. She over delivered on every occasion. She also learned our names before I even learned who she was, thank you Mariah! All in all I would definitely return! One of the very best hotels I have ever been to."

"There is no doubt the Hotel Bel-Air is a jewel in the crown of Los Angeles hotels. From the moment you step onto the arched stone bridge and gaze at the iconic swans in the pond below, it’s almost as if you have transcended into a softer, gentler and more gracious time. The temperature is always cooler, the air seems somehow softer simply by being there. But what many people may not know is how fabulous The Restaurant at the Bel-Air is. In keeping with the feel of the property, The Restaurant seamlessly blends into the beauty of the hotel. You have two options when dining; either alfresco or inside the dining room. Both are elegant however our choice always seems to be outside on the patio. With it’s soft pink and white interior, lush plants and candlelit tables and booths, it’s a beautiful place to dine. And dine, you do. For over a year now, Chef Joe Garcia has transformed the menu into a wonderful compilation of delights. You’ll still find some of the old favorites, like Lobster Bisque and Bluefin Tuna Crudo, but Chef Garcia has added elegant dishes with a French influence that follow the seasons. Adding to this already incredible combination, what makes dining here even more special is the staff. Everyone, from the hostess who seats you to the waiter who takes care of you, are incredible. Our personal favorite is Misha. He is charming, attentive and alert to all our dining needs and makes us feel like VIP’s. He is simply the best and we always request him when making a reservation for dinner. The Restaurant at the Hotel Bel-Air is not just a great place for evenings. We often drive the 30 minutes from home to go have breakfast on the weekend. It’s a great way to enjoy a Sunday morning. Ask for Jonathan or Lucinda, both are fabulous and will take the best care of you. And if you like a weekend morning “beverage”, opt for their bloody Mary’s. We think it’s one of the best we’ve ever had. If you want a wonderful morning or night out that makes you feel like you’ve been transported, don’t miss The Restaurant at the Hotel Bel-Air. You be glad you did!"
