PB hotel design editorial

What was once a 1950s apartment complex on Second Street in Santa Monica — two blocks from the Pacific and well within earshot of the pier — became Hotel Oceana after a conversion that preserved the property's low-rise courtyard typology while pushing its interiors firmly into a coastal California register. The building's three-storey U-shaped layout wraps around a central pool terrace finished in graphic black-and-white cement tile, teak sun loungers cushioned in tropical-print fabric arranged along the water's edge, with ivy-covered facades and warm timber cladding softening what could easily have felt institutional. The entrance, visible in the images, deploys a candle-lined stone staircase, diamond-glass lanterns, and a cedar-panelled ceiling to arrive at something closer to a well-appointed private residence than a hotel lobby. Interior designer Wimberly Interiors shaped the 70 rooms around a palette drawn directly from the ocean visible through most windows — indigo chevron wallcovering behind bleached oak four-poster beds, quilted navy velvet benches at the foot, geometric dhurrie rugs in chalky blue and cream, and mint-upholstered tub chairs that lift the tone without breaking the scheme. The restaurant carries the same sensibility further: powder-blue panelled columns, blush barrel chairs at pale timber tables, and a bar fronted in dramatically veined azul macaubas quartzite — a stone choice confident enough to anchor an otherwise delicate palette. The effect, throughout, is less resort hotel than elevated beach house, one that understands Southern California light well enough not to fight it.

"Excellent service beautiful hotel"

"This past weekend we stayed at LXR Oceana Santa Monica for an anniversary celebration. My wife, my daughter, and I stayed one night at LXR Oceana Santa Monica and dined at the onsite La Monique restaurant. Checking in was easy, and the front lobby staffs were friendly. Thanks to Peter, Anbroine, Nicole, and Erick, you all were wonderful. Location wise, the hotel was located at the Ocean Ave with an elevated view to the nearby Santa Monica beach. To walk to the beach from the hotel, it would still take 20 mins.Atmosphere of the hotel was filled with modern and chic inspiration. It did offer a sense of relaxation. Our room was a standard King one bedroom. We thought being a Hilton Honors Diamond member, our chance of getting upgraded would be straight forward, that’s not the case. The room itself was mostly cleaned except the head board on the king sized bed; it had some dirt marks. We notified the front desk and they sent someone up who refused to come in. We ended up getting the cleaning supplies to clean it ourselves. Hotel did offer to credit us with $100 food and beverage credit as compensation. We spent it all on the breakfast next day morning. During our stay, it wasn’t noisy at all. I even like to highlight the Jazz music being played next to the pool area (part of the La Monique restaurant). They played well, and our family enjoyed it very much. Alright, now for the part I dislike the most and it actually annoyed us to an extent. We dined at the La Monique restaurant during our stay for the dinner. We presented two credit cards to the server to put specific amounts (business vs personal cards being used). What ended up happening was the restaurant ended up finalizing a lump -sum amount onto our business credit card. We spotted the error and reached back to the hotel. And as expected hotel deferred the problem regards to the La Monique restaurant as if they don’t know each other. We then followed up by reaching directly with La Monique. They seem to have a hard time understanding a wrong amount being finalized on a wrong credit card, days after days (3 days in a row) they just kept deferring the problem to so called accountant department. On a Friday 3:00PM local time, we received a call back saying their accounting department needs to review the transactions further and won’t be able to do so until following Monday. We simply asked to speak directly with the accounting department, and we were told they are closed for the day (at 3pm). To make things easier (which indeed was a plain easy problem), we scanned all the receipts, and laid out the expected itemization on an Excel spreadsheet for the La Monique restaurant to review. That didn’t help I supposed. We are done waiting and explaining. I would say overall, LXR Oceana, was a great hotel. I wish the food and beverage management would work more effectively as a team instead of playing with customer’s patience. A simple problem like mine could’ve been resolved in less than a day and earned a 5 stars rating. Instead, I am taking the stars out for the non-sense. Hope this review helps who cares!"

"Although OCEANA Hotel doesn't have its own parking lot, their valet service was fantastic, so it was never an issue. Almost all the staff were friendly, but Lenny from the valet team especially stood out with exceptional kindness and top-notch service. Very satisfied! They also offer free bike rentals, so it was great to ride along the coastal road."

"What a truly fabulous hotel! In a quieter area of Santa Monica with wonderful ocean views we very much enjoyed our stay here. During the 4 nights we stayed, we were treated impeccably by all the wonderful staff. I could not recommend this hotel more. Our room was huge with one of the best beds we have ever had in a hotel. Every night they would do a turn down and the waters, towels etc were always fresh. The only tiny grumble I would have and I am sure it is a anomaly, is during a restaurant photo shoot the guests sitting around the pool seemed to be neglected and I was made to feel that I needed to move due to it, although not directly asked. The rest of the time, staff were very attentive and full of good tips for what to do and where to go. Shout out to the Valets, who were fabulous Tips - if you have a car, go to Santa Barbara for the day, it has a wonderful vibe."
