PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1922 as the Los Angeles headquarters of the Bank of Italy — Amadeo Giannini's populist financial institution that would become Bank of America — the Giannini Building carried civic ambition in every stone. A century later, Hotel Per La breathed new life into the 12-story neoclassical structure, bringing 241 rooms and an Italian-Californian design identity that feels less like reinvention than fulfillment of the building's original character. The restoration of the ornate lobby ceiling, with its gilded coffers and deep blue medallions, remains the property's most arresting gesture: a double-height Italianate room that interior designer Jaqui Seerman has furnished with slipcovered sofas, marble-topped tables, and tropical flower arrangements that soften the grandeur without diminishing it. The guest rooms, shaped by Jacques Garcia, carry a more intimate register — sage-green walls, dark leather arched headboards with brass globe sconces, gallery-style photograph arrangements, and freestanding soaking tubs positioned beside windows as if bathing deserved the same quality of light as reading. Overdyed red rugs and embroidered settees introduce the warmth of a well-traveled apartment rather than a hotel room. Up on the rooftop, the shift is cinematic: terracotta brick pavers, banana palms, and a carved stone lion mask spouting into the pool frame downtown Los Angeles towers in the distance — a scene that manages to feel simultaneously ancient Mediterranean and entirely, unmistakably Californian.

"I want to write a review for Kate who checked us in and made our two year anniversary that much more special with her incredible welcome, kindness and help. She was beyond exceptional when it came to customer service and hospitality skills. Aside from that — we have been coming To Per La for two years now and half a dozen times and it’s one of the best places when it comes to decor, ambiance, amenities, services and location. Thank you !"

"My husband & I stayed at the hotel during a trip to LA & Santa Barbara in April. Overall, we were very happy with our stay. Check in was easy, staff members were friendly, the lobby is beautiful and rooms were clean and decorated in interesting ways (not at all typical generic hotel). We had a delicious breakfast one morning in the lobby one morning and I enjoyed the coffee place. As noted by other guests, the rooms are very small. Having two bigger suitcases presented a bit of a challenge and there's not a lot of room for extras. The fixtures can be funky. That said, the rooms were ckean and quiet. The last night marred our stay a bit as we decided to have dinner at the rooftop bar and found the food & service to be disappointing. It was a Monday night so maybe not staffed well (?), but it wasn't in keeping with the rest of our stay."

"I switched up from my usual LA hotel & glad I did. This hotel rocks. It is beautiful, the rooms are moody & calming. I was upgraded to a suite without asking & the staff were so friendly. The breakfast was also very good. There is a daily resort fee, $18 gets credited to you for meals/drinks daily. Overall clean, safe, beautiful hotel with a great pool."

"Unique décor but dark near elevators and in hallways. Room with 2 queen beds was spacious. View on 7th floor of other buildings (some close) and old boiler equipment. Room was clean but bathroom had some mold on shower curtain and tub. Shower/tub had confusing fixtures. Beds were comfortable. Not a smart TV so limited viewing. Location was marginal – okay in daytime but seedy at night. Rooftop pool was a plus. We were charged for an $11 bottle of water we did not drink – was told it would be taken off the bill but it never was."
