PB hotel design editorial

Where Ocean Avenue meets the Santa Monica beachfront, a curved white facade articulated with arched dormers, zinc-clad mansard detailing, and a sweeping pergola porte-cochère announces the Regent Santa Monica Beach — a property that has been through several identities since the building was originally constructed in the early 1990s, most recently completing a substantial renovation to carry the Regent flag. The postmodern massing, with its symmetrical wings flanking a central glazed gable, frames a pool courtyard that opens directly onto the sand, the Pacific sitting at the end of a sightline framed by tall palms and pale celadon umbrellas. The interiors move between two distinct registers. Guest rooms are dressed in a coastal residential palette — grey velvet wingback headboards against white beadboard-effect wall paneling, striped wool carpeting in ice blue and white, celadon ceramic lamps, and boucle lounge chairs that lean closer to a well-appointed Santa Monica apartment than a hotel suite. The bar and restaurant operate in an altogether warmer key: travertine bar counters curve beneath a cantilevered brass shelving tier, cognac leather booth seating lines the perimeter, and a cluster of globe pendant lights in brushed gold hover at varying heights above the room — an Art Deco adjacency with genuine conviction, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows facing the last light over the Pacific.

"Exceptional hotel. Exceptional service. Exceptional location. Really enjoyed our stay here. Everything was perfect. Thanks to the whole team."

"The property is amazingly beautiful and believe me, that’s only the beginning! The team makes you feel as if you’re the only guest on site. We spent 4 days and 3 nights in the fire pit, ocean front room this week. The staff decorated the room for my partners bday ahead of arrival. Places lounge chairs on the patio to ensure we could sit at the fire pit, tan/lounge, and/or enjoy breakfast at the round + 4 chairs. The property is California luxury, best in class service, and worth every penny! Waldo is amazing and helped us with every request. Love this property and will be back!"

"We spent two weeks at this fantastic hotel, and it was hands down the best hotel experience we’ve ever had, thanks to the amazing staff. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and attentive to detail—they even surprised us with our initials embroidered on the pillowcases! Truly the best hotel experience, and we will definitely be back."

"I was invited to an event. I came an hour early, wanted to use their valet - and after 45 mins in line I gave up and went for an alternative structure. The situation after the event was even worse and I was so thankful that we had parked elsewhere. The whole event felt as it had come as a surprise to then. The whole thing felt so ... unprepared. Back down in the lobby we could not even get a coffee. Visually, it's a nice hotel. I just fail to understand how you can invite a few hundred local business executives and then fail so badly. So while this hotel may be nice for leisure, I would never book any of our Princess for one day events there."

"My family and I just returned from a Father's Day weekend at Regent Santa Monica Beach, and it was one of the most impressive hotel experiences we've had. We stayed in a 720 Oceanfront King room, which was spectacular. The room was spacious, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable, but the true highlight was the view. Being able to sit on the patio and watch the ocean while our children played, read, relaxed, and enjoyed the room created some of our favorite memories of the weekend. We found ourselves spending far more time in the room than we normally do on vacation simply because it was such a wonderful place to be. While the property itself is stunning, what truly sets Regent Santa Monica Beach apart is the service culture. Every interaction felt thoughtful, genuine, and personal. Before our arrival, Deidra was incredibly helpful and responsive regarding room questions I had. Throughout the stay, Waldo made us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for, taking the time to ensure our family was comfortable and enjoying everything the property had to offer. Lex checked in proactively and made certain our stay was going smoothly. The level of engagement from the leadership team was remarkable and set the tone for the entire experience. What impressed me most was how attentive the staff were to details. Housekeeping noticed we were traveling with a toddler and disposing of diapers in the room trash. Without us requesting anything, they proactively delivered a Diaper Genie to our room. It was such a simple gesture, but it demonstrated an incredible level of awareness and care. Dining at Orla was another highlight. Both breakfast and dinner were outstanding. Pia stopped by our table to personally ensure everything was going well and even made sure we hadn't left any belongings behind when we finished our meal. Ryan provided exceptional service during dinner and went above and beyond for our family. When our son preferred traditional dinner rolls over the pita bread being served, Ryan and the team went out of their way to locate rolls elsewhere so he could have something he enjoyed. They also handled special requests with grace and professionalism, making our children feel genuinely welcome throughout the meal. The food itself was excellent. The breakfasts were memorable, the seafood dishes were outstanding, the cocktails were creative and well-crafted, and the desserts were fantastic. Orla delivered the kind of dining experience that would be worth visiting even if you weren't staying at the hotel. What impressed me most about Regent was the consistency. The front desk team, concierge staff, housekeeping, restaurant staff, bell team, and managers all seemed aligned around the same goal: creating an exceptional guest experience. It wasn't one outstanding employee—it was an entire culture of hospitality. There are many luxury hotels with beautiful buildings and desirable locations. Far fewer succeed in making guests feel genuinely cared for. Regent Santa Monica Beach does both. This is unquestionably a luxury property, but after experiencing the level of service, attention to detail, dining, and hospitality we received, we left feeling it delivered tremendous value. We have stayed at many excellent hotels over the years, and this is one of the few that had our family discussing a return visit before we had even checked out. Thank you to Waldo, Deidra, Lex, Pia, Ryan, and the entire Regent Santa Monica Beach team for making our Father's Day weekend so memorable. We are already looking forward to coming back."
