PB hotel design editorial

Where Ocean Avenue meets the Santa Monica beachfront, a curved white facade articulated with arched dormers, zinc-clad mansard detailing, and a sweeping pergola porte-cochère announces the Regent Santa Monica Beach — a property that has been through several identities since the building was originally constructed in the early 1990s, most recently completing a substantial renovation to carry the Regent flag. The postmodern massing, with its symmetrical wings flanking a central glazed gable, frames a pool courtyard that opens directly onto the sand, the Pacific sitting at the end of a sightline framed by tall palms and pale celadon umbrellas. The interiors move between two distinct registers. Guest rooms are dressed in a coastal residential palette — grey velvet wingback headboards against white beadboard-effect wall paneling, striped wool carpeting in ice blue and white, celadon ceramic lamps, and boucle lounge chairs that lean closer to a well-appointed Santa Monica apartment than a hotel suite. The bar and restaurant operate in an altogether warmer key: travertine bar counters curve beneath a cantilevered brass shelving tier, cognac leather booth seating lines the perimeter, and a cluster of globe pendant lights in brushed gold hover at varying heights above the room — an Art Deco adjacency with genuine conviction, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows facing the last light over the Pacific.

"I came here for breakfast and it was absolutely horrible. My friends and I were treated very poorly and I see why we were the only people in there The food was really bad. The service was horrible not to mention the vibe was anything but friendly. It was actually a little off and just rude as if no one really cared and everyone’s kind of staring around at each other. Just very unprofessional. And. Even though we ordered a bunch of things on the menu, everything was bad totally disappointing. I certainly will not be coming back."

"I came in here several times with my friend and was literally harassed. The creepy waiter actually was staring at me and making creepy faces at me. My friend said he would tell management about it. We went to Linda the food and beverage Director and she said she’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again and she’s so sorry only for Randy the rooms manager to not only not care about it but he actually said hey here at this hotel, we acknowledge all guests and the waiters are supposed to talk to every guest. It was the weirdest response this hotel promotes itself as an LGBTQ Hotel, but I honestly don’t even feel safe walking in there as a woman. Either they’ve never seen a pretty girl before or they’re literally demons. I’m still deciding, but I would never go near this place again for the rest of my life."

"Came here twice with a friend. Once for breakfast and once for dinner and each time I was made to feel extremely uncomfortable by the waiters. From the way they were looking at me and talking to me and treating me let’s just say if I didn’t have to be at that last dinner I couldn’t have run out of there fast enough. And I actually did leave the dinner early since I figured it was maybe just one waiter at breakfast and it wouldn’t happen again but no the dinner was even worse a few weeks later. Same exact treatment and vibe. The dogs and cats have taken over the house. I’m not going get into all the details but let’s just say it was very harassing, rude, offensive and I have no idea how they let such unprofessional and crude people around the customers. I will never go back to this place!!"

"Such a horrible and evil place, I came in here at least four times with my son cause my friend is a regular here and every time was worse than the next I truly felt discriminated upon. Everybody seemed to go out of their way to be rude to me. The room service never answers the phone I was later told there’s only one employee other than the receptionist I reached out to the general manager, but apparently he doesn’t respond to emails or phone calls. I don’t know if it’s because I’m black cause I don’t play the race card, but I can assure you that the service was so bad it seemed personal just very mean people but the attitudes of the staff in general was much worse. I was pretty much hit on by a guy in the restaurant which made me feel really uncomfortable. Apparently he’s in sales and dining now so they told me don’t worry about him anymore lol my eight year old son was forced to wait for two hours even though we were told the room was ready and he has ADD. He was very restless, and we were just gonna leave He’s only eight years old and that was just a nightmare since we were promised several times the room would be ready when we got there or we wouldn’t have shown up at that time just to have to hear someone say “hey it doesn’t matter who you tell about this, they’re gonna make you wait, no matter what. It’s not gonna make a difference as the person smiled and walked away.” honestly they enjoyed the fact that I was screwed over and my son and I are sitting there not knowing what to do or where to go. The room was dirty. The food was just absolutely horrible when it did show up. Aside from the chocolate cake everything was really really bad and low quality. The other times I stayed there. I wouldn’t even order the food there. I had to call my friend who had to call down to valet parking because they didn’t even believe I was in the hotel when I wanted to get a charger from my truck. And they kept threatening that they were going to charge me for parking if I even just went to my car at all since it’s late at night. Additionally, they won’t answer their phones most of the time. Eventually an operator will tell me someone will me back and they don’t. I could go on and on, but let’s just say very rude service very poorly run hotel, and very unprofessional. The food was absolutely awful and if my friend wasn’t a regular here, I never would’ve gone to this place to begin with I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone even the staff told me that the place has gone way downhill no one’s ever in there anymore I see why now, stay away!"

"A stunning renovation of this beachfront property. We are a family of 5 and comfortably stayed in a 2 bedroom suite. The room furnishings are beautiful and the bedding super lux. The staff at this hotel are all very friendly and entertaining, many of them have worked through the renovation and all genuinely love the new management. I enjoyed my morning coffee from Sweet July Cafe each morning, quite a good standard for an American coffee!! The breakfast in the hotel restaurant was also fantastic and overlooked the beautiful Santa Monica Beach. Our favourite highlight of the hotel was sitting by the firepit each night overlooking the lights of Santa Monica Pier and reflecting on our day. Overall an excellent hotel and would definitely stay here again."
