PB hotel design editorial

Kelly Wearstler's involvement with the Santa Monica Proper Hotel represented something of a homecoming — the designer's Southern California sensibility meeting a property whose stucco courtyard facades and palm-shaded interior volumes feel deeply rooted in their setting. Completed in 2021 within a purpose-built seven-storey structure on Fifth Street, the 271-room hotel gave Wearstler the rare opportunity to shape both the architectural language and the interior atmosphere from the ground up, in collaboration with the local firm Natoma Architects. The interiors carry the effect of a well-traveled collector's house rather than a composed hotel environment. Dark iridescent tile wraps the lobby columns while indoor palms rise through double-height volumes furnished with bamboo chairs, Moroccan rugs, and sculptural ceramic wall pieces. Guest rooms deploy Wearstler's signature layering of tone and texture — arc-form upholstered headboards in woven natural fiber dominate accent walls clad in grasscloth-style panels, paired with bleached oak floors, slatted wood bed benches, striped wing chairs, and wicker pendant lights whose warm glow anchors the room's sandy, dusk-lit palette. On the rooftop, a pool terrace edged with ornamental grasses and teak loungers frames a clear Pacific sightline, the ocean visible just beyond Santa Monica's low-rise skyline — an understated payoff to a building whose restraint at street level gives little away.

About

Santa Monica Proper introduces a looser kind of luxury to Santa Monica. Here, within walking distance to the beach, each of the 263rooms, suites and spaces successfully optimize the city's abundant ocean breezes and natural light, while the interior design finds inspiration in the organic tones and textures of the local coastline. Santa Monica Proper beckons guests with the only rooftop pool deck on the Westside, complete with Balearic restaurant, bar, and cabanas, where guests are front-row for sunsets over the Pacific. With an emphasis on Eastern inspired wellness, the hotel's Surya Spa, offers custom-designed Ayurvedic programs supporting physical, mental and spiritual health. Anything less just wouldn't be Proper.

"Beautiful property. Every single detail, wow. Great food and service. Felt every person going above and beyond. The downstairs space seems like a lot for service to manage between a co-working space and restaurant and hotel guests, and it is managed extraordinarily. If you appreciate the value of design and well-being, can’t think of a better place to stay."

"Why do my wife and I continually return to the Santa Monica Proper Hotel? Because it's the perfect mix of service, room attractiveness, location, amenities, restaurant quality, value and fun. We stay in the same room on two or three visits per year - feels like a home!"

"The Proper Hotel offered us a warm welcome and to our delight a upgrade to a suite with a connecting room which was perfect for my daughter and granddaughter. Our suite was extremely comfortable with a king size bed and a very spacious chic bathroom with Aesop bath products. The design of the room was gorgeous and very well appointed. We appreciated the furniture and textured wallpaper as it highlighted the interior decor. We also loved dining in the rooftop restaurant Calabra on the swimming pool level. It was incredibly busy but the staff managed beautifully. It’s highly recommended to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Breakfast in Palma on the lobby level was again very enjoyable and the interior gorgeous. The location not on the beach but a good ten minute walk away. We had no trouble using Ubers and also had fun ordering a Waymo driverless car. Overall - a fantastic boutique style experience with exceptional quality and service. Well done 👍"

"I have very mixed feelings about my recent stay. On the surface, this is a beautiful hotel. The design is stunning, the location is fantastic, and I found both the gym and the general facilities to be exceptionally clean and well-maintained. Unfortunately, the physical beauty of the hotel was completely overshadowed by a terrifying security failure and an insulting follow-up from management. The Incident At 1:00 AM, while my companion and I were awake and watching TV, another guest was able to access and enter our room. We were shocked and immediately contacted the front desk. The security team and the overnight manager arrived, investigated the situation, and determined that the breach did indeed happen. They issued us new room keys on the spot. The Management Failure The following morning, I spoke with the manager on duty. I was told the incident would be "fully investigated" and that I would receive a follow-up. After waiting a week, the response I received was that their records showed "no entry" into our room at that time. By denying an event that their own overnight staff had already confirmed and addressed, the hotel essentially called us liars. I have no reason to fabricate a story about a stranger walking into my room in the middle of the night. Verdict A hotel’s primary job is to provide a safe, secure environment. While the building is lovely, the lack of integrity in how management handled this security breach ruined my experience. I cannot recommend a hotel that prioritizes "record-keeping" over the lived experience and safety of its guests."
