PB hotel design editorial

Few California hotels have so convincingly argued that a new building can carry the emotional weight of somewhere old and loved. Shutters on the Beach, designed by Michael Rosenfeld with interiors by Michael S. Smith and opened in 1993, achieves this by drawing on the shingle-style vocabulary of East Coast beach houses — grey-painted clapboard, hipped rooflines, white balustrades stepping back in tiers from the sand — and transplanting it to Santa Monica's shoreline with enough conviction that it has always felt inherited rather than constructed. The five-storey structure along Ocean Avenue holds 198 rooms, most angled toward the Pacific, and the building's domestic scale at street level, broken into smaller pavilion-like masses punctuated by palms, keeps the massing from reading as institutional. Smith's interiors follow the same logic: faux-bamboo and turned-wood four-poster beds, indigo kantha throws, geometric dhurrie-style rugs in sea-glass blues and cream, plantation shutters admitting salt-bright California light rather than controlling it. The guestrooms visible in the images carry blue-and-white porcelain accents and floral upholstered armchairs that suggest a well-travelled beach house rather than a hotel room assembled to a brief. At the pool terrace, white pergolas frame navy-and-white striped cabanas, the horizon line of the Pacific completing the composition at dusk. The restaurant terrace, draped in climbing vines and strung with warm filament bulbs above marble bistro tables, extends the residential warmth into evening without any of the self-consciousness that tends to undermine that ambition elsewhere.

"This was my second visit to this hotel, and it did not disappoint. Service was terrific. Before arriving, the concierge recommended terrific restaurants, and after leaving Shutters, the hotel mailed back something I had left in the room via complimentary FedEx. The hotel is an easy 15-minute drive to the Getty Museum. and LACMA. The rooms are large and well appointed"

"My son and I stayed for several days while attending USC graduation ceremonies. Shutters is exceptional in every sense of the word. From arrival to departure and everything in between, Shutters' staff made sure you were catered to. The facilities are also first rate and you simply can't beat the location if it's a SoCal beach vacation that you are looking for."

"This is a beautiful hotel on the beach. Great location. Short walking distance to downtown Santa Monica. Great amenities- we used the bikes to ride to Venice and around the canals. Service is top notch at this hotel! The lobby is also beautiful. Coffee in the morning and nice music in the evening. We visited for our daughter's birthday and they surprised her with a slice of b-day cake and a card! So thoughtful! I strongly recommend getting the package that includes breakfast. You can also have breakfast at their sister hotel Casa Del Mar. Whenever we visit our daughter in LA, Shutters on the Beach or Casa Del Mar are my favorite places to stay."

"Shutters is quiet luxury with an amazing team that genuinely seems happy to be there. The events marketing team is wonderful - Li-ling, Maddie, Saule make planning a wedding easy and happy. Great apparel choices in the gift shop and Leila makes it so fun. Great food and drinks and magical setting."
