PB hotel design editorial

Hollywood and Vine has accumulated more mythology per square foot than almost any intersection in Los Angeles, and the building at 1717 Vine Street has absorbed its share — passing through incarnations as a members' club backed by Paul Allen before arriving, in 2022, as The Aster, a hybrid boutique hotel and private members' club designed by Kevin O'Shea of Salt Hotels. The six-story facade presents in muted blue-grey stucco, its arched windows and classical cornice detailing offset by a ground-floor plinth finished in near-black, striped awnings and heavy bronze-framed doors giving the street-level a moody, almost speakeasy quality. Rooftop plantings of palms and tropical foliage soften the parapet, while the pool deck one floor below — wicker chaise longues, indigo-printed cushions, cream umbrellas — frames a clear sightline to the Capitol Records building. Inside, the 35 all-suite guestrooms spread across floors three and four, each starting at 750 square feet. The material choices are warm and specific: white oak millwork, antique armoires, hand-glazed ceramic lamps, and layered Persian-style rugs underfoot. Mid-century lounge chairs in sage green upholstery, dark rattan headboards with geometric lattice framing, and pendant lights in woven rattan trace a lineage from California bohemian to vintage resort without losing coherence. The ground-floor bar and restaurant leans into a different atmosphere entirely — lavender walls, bubble-glass chandeliers, herringbone oak floors, and exuberant tropical plantings that make the whole room feel like a greenhouse that learned to mix cocktails.

"This is a really nice spot if you need a spot close to the Pantages! It is just next door, their valet parking is super easy, the rooms are bright and spacious, and their rooftop bar/restaurant has descent (not amazing) food and very spotty service, but the views of capital records and the Hollywood sign can’t be beat."

"Lovely hotel and nice suite. Noisy, as our room faced Vine, but not much can be done about that. Two issues, one small and one significant. First, it's convenient that the wifi does not require room/name authentication when connecting, but it automatically signs you out after ~24 hours, requiring you to hit the "connect" button again. This creates a problem in that devices that guests need to remain connected (for alerts, downloads and work-related matters) go offline without warning; the system kills the internet. More importantly, on the first full day of our stay, the hotel had booked use of all the public spaces for a Grammy-related event. This caused us to lose a main reason for staying at the Aster. We had planned to spend the day enjoying the use of the lounge, the roof, etc., but had to instead venture out to find other things to do. And because we had pre-booked other things around the city for the other days of the stay, we never managed to enjoy the promised hotel amenities. When we inquired, we were given a food credit that got us . . . one cocktail apiece. Suggestion: please advise guests before accepting a reservation that on one or more days, the guests would not be able to access the primary benefits of the hotel. And/or offer a significant discount off the room rate to compensate for that loss - after all, if all the guests are receiving is the use of the room only, then it's equivalent to staying at a lesser, less expensive hotel nearby."

"We really lucked out and found this gem through Delta Hotels. The Aster Hotel was fantastic. We stayed in the Pool Club Suite, and the room was large, quiet, and very comfortable—especially appreciated after a long day. Despite the hotel having a fun, social vibe, the room itself felt calm and private. We grabbed a quick bite to eat on the 5th floor, and it was solid and convenient. Overall, the hotel strikes a great balance between stylish and relaxed. Would absolutely stay here again and would recommend it without hesitation."

"The room was amazing. Very spacious clean, staff was warm welcoming and assisted me with every one of my questions. Very nice patio overlooking the pool from our view. Valet was very nice and just the aesthetics of the hotel. The architect was very impressive."

"I stayed at the Aster this weekend, and it was amazing. I loved the mix of club and general public access. I loved the location and the rooftop restaurant. The workspaces and gym are all that you need. My favorite part was my room. It was spacious and well-furnished, the living room was comfortable, and the room had a recessed deck. It was perfect. It is my new favorite place to stay in LA."
