PB hotel design editorial

Spearmint green against a Santa Monica dusk, the seven-storey Art Deco tower at 1415 Ocean Avenue has been one of the most recognizable facades on the California coast since Stiles O. Clements completed it in 1933. The Georgian Hotel carries that original exuberance faithfully — the ochre cornice, the cast ornamental panels running vertically between floors, the black-and-white striped awning at street level — while a recent renovation has reinterpreted the interiors with a confidence that honors the period without retreating into pastiche. Inside, the design draws on a layered palette of teal, amber, and dusty pink that moves fluidly across the 84 rooms and public spaces. Bespoke headboards in arched tangerine velvet with dark walnut surrounds anchor the guest rooms in classic Deco geometry, offset by wide-plank oak floors and globe pendant chandeliers recalling the 1930s Californian resort vernacular. The lobby bar arrives as a full theatrical set: a green marble counter trimmed in brass beneath a large cartwheel pendant fixture, compass-star inlaid floor tiles, and deep gold curtains framing the back bar — a room that evokes the golden age of Sunset-adjacent glamour without surrendering to nostalgia. The terrace restaurant, draped in hanging bougainvillea and ferns with pink upholstered chairs lining yellow banquettes, keeps one eye firmly on the ocean beyond Ocean Avenue.

"Amanda at the front desk truly made my recent stay at The Georgian exceptional. This was my second visit, and I continue to love the unbeatable location, the charming boutique style, and the consistently warm, accommodating staff. During this stay, I had some unruly neighbors, and Amanda handled the situation quickly and efficiently, moving me to a quiet room without any hassle. Her responsiveness and professionalism turned what could have been a frustrating evening into a seamless experience. I love this hotel and will be back again."

"Just a shout out for a great extended stay at the Georgian. We got stuck with the blizzard in the northeast so really appreciated the excellent food and service at the Georgian. Compliments to Melina ( sp?) and the other breakfast servers who were warm and efficient and reached out to all the guests to make them feel like they were at home. The food was excellent. We ate twice at the Georgian restaurant in the basement and it was superb and the brunches on the main floor were fantastic. Highly recommend the avocado toast! Also wanted to say that all the reception and Door and Valet staff couldn’t have been more friendly and eager to please. Five stars."

"The staff here goes above and beyond. First when we checked in our room wasn't ready because of bad weather and hotel staff shortage. They allowed us to get a snack at the hotel restaurant on them, very thoughtful with two antsy kids. Then, I ordered Postmates to the hotel and they delivered it next door to the apartment building -- Miranda the Security lead was so kind and walked over with me to try and get it back but their security guard wasn't there -- then Azeal the front desk manager called their security guard and went and brought me my sushi dinner. It was just very thoughtful and amazing customer service. Such a great hotel as well -- really cool restaurant, library room with games for kids and even an art gallery. Highly recommend the location can't be beat at the beach and near the pier."

"Over the past year, while displaced from my home after the Palisades fire, I’ve stayed at The Georgian several times — typically for one night before or after events in Los Angeles. I’ve had enough stays to see both the highs and the inconsistencies. First, booking strategy matters here. Every time I reserved through the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) portal, I received a confirmed upgrade to a small suite. When booking directly through the hotel, the assigned rooms were noticeably smaller — quite tight, with minimal space to move around comfortably. If you’re considering staying here, I strongly recommend going the FHR route. The hotel undeniably has Old World charm. The Art Deco exterior and lobby are lovely, and the location — directly across from the ocean — is hard to beat. That said, the experience varies depending on the room you’re given. Some rooms feel fresh and well-maintained; others could benefit from more thorough dusting and bathroom updates. Views are also inconsistent — several rooms look directly onto neighboring walls rather than the coastline. Service has been generally neutral. Not unfriendly, but not particularly warm either. When I raised minor concerns during one stay, the response felt slightly defensive rather than solution-oriented. On the positive side, room service has always been prompt and friendly, and the bar service has been quite good. The main-floor restaurant is fine — nothing memorable — and the speakeasy-style space isn’t open daily, so availability can be limited. At this price point, especially in Santa Monica where competition is strong, I expect more consistency in room quality and attention to detail. The location is excellent and the building has character, but overall, the experience lands squarely at 3.5 stars rather than a solid four. If you prioritize charm and proximity to the beach and are strategic about booking, it can work. If you’re seeking polished luxury and seamless service, you may want to explore other options."

"Our stay at The Georgian was excellent. The hotel itself is beautiful, the restaurant is outstanding, and the location is truly great — perfect for enjoying Santa Monica. The rooms are on the smaller side, but they are beautifully designed, very stylish, and thoughtfully arranged, which more than makes up for the size. Overall, a fantastic hotel with great atmosphere and quality. I would happily return and would definitely recommend it."
