PB hotel design editorial

Spearmint green against a Santa Monica dusk, the seven-storey Art Deco tower at 1415 Ocean Avenue has been one of the most recognizable facades on the California coast since Stiles O. Clements completed it in 1933. The Georgian Hotel carries that original exuberance faithfully — the ochre cornice, the cast ornamental panels running vertically between floors, the black-and-white striped awning at street level — while a recent renovation has reinterpreted the interiors with a confidence that honors the period without retreating into pastiche. Inside, the design draws on a layered palette of teal, amber, and dusty pink that moves fluidly across the 84 rooms and public spaces. Bespoke headboards in arched tangerine velvet with dark walnut surrounds anchor the guest rooms in classic Deco geometry, offset by wide-plank oak floors and globe pendant chandeliers recalling the 1930s Californian resort vernacular. The lobby bar arrives as a full theatrical set: a green marble counter trimmed in brass beneath a large cartwheel pendant fixture, compass-star inlaid floor tiles, and deep gold curtains framing the back bar — a room that evokes the golden age of Sunset-adjacent glamour without surrendering to nostalgia. The terrace restaurant, draped in hanging bougainvillea and ferns with pink upholstered chairs lining yellow banquettes, keeps one eye firmly on the ocean beyond Ocean Avenue.

"When you think of all things Southern California, old Hollywood glam, celebrity treatment, think the Georgian! What an incredible place! There is literally not one thing wrong here. We booked a staycation for one of our gloriously perfect January weather weekends and a much needed getaway. We took the train from OC to LA, then the metro to Santa Monica to be car-less and carefree for the weekend (so we did not have to worry about parking or fees here so I can’t speak to that!) Before we even arrived, my expectations were exceeded. Our goal was as also to eat at the Georgian Restaurant downstairs, but our reservation had to be canceled due to a private party. When I emailed the hotel about my concerns for a pre fix event on the other night of our stay, they responded immediately apologizing for any inconvenience and explaining the cocktail pop-up event and inviting us to join them as their guests. When we arrived, the manager (Phil!) made to sure introduce himself as the person I had been corresponding with and upgraded us to one of their signature suites. Holy cow! We took our complimentary welcome bubbles up to our room and were blown away by the suite and the view! Customer service is incredible and the hotel itself with all its classic Hollywood/ Wes Anderson vibes is exactly the kind of place we just can’t get enough of! We did have an incredible night down in the Georgian Room but their street level restaurant was also amazing for breakfast and the bar served up some perfect martinis. We took advantage of the free bike rental and had the best day checking out Venice and ate lunch at The Warehouse Restaurant (what a fun spot). When I realized we hadn’t asked about the rental time window, I called the hotel and they said it is usually 2 hours but we were good to stay out later. Our last morning, we HAD to push the champagne button for the mini bar. While we definitely splurged some on this getaway, it was SO WORTH IT! I truly cannot wait to come back. Book this place, it is perfect in every way!"

"From the moment we pulled up to that iconic turquoise facade, the experience was transportive and special. Abner at check-in was exceptionally warm and professional, acknowledging our loyalty. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a 1 Bedroom King Suite. Yoshwa at the front desk also deserves praise for making our stay special. Every time we interacted with him, it felt like we were coming back to a place that appreciated us. Traveling with four kids means logistics can make or break a trip. The hardware in the suite is impressive. A few specific details that made a difference for us: The Sinks: They are positioned slightly lower than modern standard counters, which was great for our younger kids to wash up without a step stool. Lighting & Hardware: These were big surprises for us based on the vibe of the hotel. We loved that the room had ample lighting (unexpected in a historic hotel) and the shower head delivered a massive amount of water and pressure. The "Little" Things: Finding a full sized bottle of baby soap and the crib already in the room is a small touch that signals this hotel actually thinks about families. The Trade-off: If you are a light sleeper, note that the curtains aren't total blackout, so you'll get a bit of that California morning glow. The elevators were a bit small (but full of character), our family with the stroller pretty much maxes it out. Since we were on the third floor we took the stairs majority of the time. It's in the middle of the building and opens directly into the middle of the "action". It was actually kind of fun to take the stairs (never thought I'd say that about a hotel). Standout Features The Breakfast: This is easily one of the best Globalist breakfast perks in the domestic portfolio. We sat in the covered outdoor seating overlooking the Pacific. The service was impeccable, but the real standout was the flexibility of the menu that allowed us to order some non-traditional breakfast entrees. Kid-Specific Wins: The location is unbeatable for a family of six. We were within easy walking distance of the beach, the Children’s Museum, and the Third Street Promenade (the kids spent a lot of time at Miniso and Barnes & Noble). Pro-Tip: If you have a kid who is a fruit fanatic, the gym is stocked with fresh apples and oranges. A Note on the Neighborhood: For families who have been apprehensive about the safety or cleanliness of Santa Monica recently, we were pleasantly surprised. The area around the hotel has been significantly cleaned up, and we felt perfectly comfortable walking the kids to the pier and shops. The "Shout-Outs" The staff here really elevated the stay to another level for us. Abner & Yoshwa (Front Desk): For a warm, inviting check-in and consistent positivity. Caroline (Breakfast): Exceptional service; she made our mornings feel effortless and leisurely (if you have kids you know how difficult this is). Marco (Breakfast): Not only great service, but gave us the recommendation for the Getty Villa which ended up being the perfect final activity before leaving Santa Monica. Preston (Bellhop): Incredibly friendly and helpful with our four kids. The Verdict The Georgian is our new favorite for SoCal staycation. It balances historical prestige with practical family utility in a way few beachfront properties can. We already plan on and are looking forward to coming back again."
