PB hotel design editorial

Few Santa Monica addresses carry quite the architectural assertiveness of the tower at 1111 Second Street, where a boldly ornamented 1960s high-rise — its facade articulated with decorative relief panels and a dramatic vertical fin running the full height of the building — anchors the northern end of the city's hotel corridor just two blocks from the Pacific. The Huntley Hotel fills all eighteen floors of that structure, and its positioning rewards accordingly: upper rooms frame unobstructed views across Santa Monica Bay toward the Santa Monica Mountains, the kind of panorama that makes the California promise feel genuinely delivered rather than merely implied. The interiors, refreshed in a renovation that brought a cool, contemporary palette to bear on the building's mid-century bones, work in silver-grey upholstery, tufted headboards, crystal pendant fixtures, and mustard accent throws — a restrained glamour that keeps the windows as the dominant feature rather than competing with them. The rooftop restaurant, The Penthouse, makes the most explicit argument for the building's elevation: its wraparound glazing pulls the Pacific horizon into the dining room so completely that the white upholstered chairs and brass-edged tables seem almost incidental to the experience. One floor down, a second restaurant treats the ocean view with similar confidence, its bleached timber floors and all-white seating giving the space the bright, washed quality of a vessel rather than a conventional hotel dining room. For a building whose exterior ornament belongs firmly to another era, the interiors demonstrate a clean clarity of purpose.

"This property has a wonderful indoor rooftop bar and restaurant that is worth a visit. The hotel itself is not. Overpriced as their 'suite' is basically a barely larger room than normal with just a small sitting area. I am not sure how they can call that a suite. Their front desk service for checking in and out is like from the 90s. Each person takes ten minutes and there is always a line. Lastly, shockingly they limit the AC in the rooms. I was there when it was 95-100 degrees outside and having the room not be able to get cool is unacceptable for the price you are paying. I called and the front desk said basically 'we don't care'. Even the downstairs lobby was hot all the time, particularly noticable when you are standing in line waiting to check in and out. It was really a poor experience for supposedly such a high end property at a price that matches."

"August in Los Angeles is HOT. Santa Monica offers respite with ocean views. It is also awash with awesome architecture. The Huntley is in one of those buildings built in 1966 and recently remodeled "with a glamorous, design-forward '70s lounge culture aesthetic by Thomas Schoos." I loved the lobby. Our room was lovely, view great and beds comfortable. The walk-in closet was a great feature. Bathroom was small but well designed. Coffee and water seemed to be complimentary but do not touch the beautiful treat and minibar fridge unless you are wishing to splurge. It could be worth it, but the print explaining how it works is very small. We ate at the Penthouse and it was excellent. I also ate there for breakfast, and I loved the morning views. Service and food perfect. The location is perfect. It is a block off of Ocean and sort of behind the Fairmont Hotel. This puts it an easy walking distance from the hustle and bustle of the pier, but separate and quiet. There is access to the beach from the Palisades Park on Ocean Ave. The Park has a paved walkway, lovely landscaping and spectacular views of the ocean. It is well policed. There are many interesting restaurants. There is good public transportation as well as rideshare."

"I’ve stayed at The Huntley now 3 times and I’m not sure what to compliment first about this hotel. Location is awesome and the rooms are spotless, decor is stylish and the rooftop restaurant has THE BEST views along with great food. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the staff. They are incredibly attentive, friendly, and genuinely make you feel well taken care of throughout your stay. The Huntley offers all the amenities you'd expect from a major hotel brand, combined with the personalized service and warmth that usually only comes from a family-run property. I LOVE it there."

"I have stayed at the Huntley many times for business, staff, rooms, valet and view have consistently been great. The gym is a little small, so it can be hard to find room."
