PB hotel design editorial

Right on Pacific Coast Highway where Malibu's surf culture has concentrated longest — beside the pier, above the point break that gave the town its reputation — a former 1960s motel was transformed into The Surfrider, a 20-room hotel whose retro roadside signage deliberately preserves the vernacular of the California motor lodge while everything behind it has been remade with a considered restraint that the original never had. The interiors, developed with a sensibility closer to a well-traveled Malibu resident's weekend house than a designed hotel, layer white-painted shiplap walls with wide-plank oak floors, jute rugs, and linen slipcovers in the kind of undyed natural tones that ask nothing of the eye. Four-poster frames in pale oak anchor the larger rooms, paired with low slung linen sofas and rough-hewn teak side stools that carry the feel of objects gathered rather than specified. Woven rattan pendants hang in the garden-facing rooms where bougainvillea crowds the sliding doors; minimal cone pendants serve the ocean-side suites instead. The rooftop deck frames the Malibu Pier directly in its sightline — teak-framed built-in banquettes under white market umbrellas, planted with rosemary and olive in terracotta pots — a composition that manages to feel genuinely casual precisely because it has been so carefully edited.

"this was a horrible experience. The worst experience I have ever had at a hotel. The kitchen was out of service. There was no soap in the bathroom. They were completely disorganized, and there were bugs in the bed."

"From the moment we arrived, service was impeccable. The front desk staff & the restaurant servers all made us feel like we were home. Our naturally lit, cozy room was beautifully appointed; even the robes were deliciously soft. Our first night, we ordered 3 entrees and each voted for different favorites (always a good sign). The ambiance was fantastic, the cocktails were excellent, and the food was truly outstanding. Our experience at dinner prompted our decision to stay in for breakfast and for lunch the following day - and every single dish was stunning. In fact, we even returned, post check-out, for a repeat of the veggie bowl with chicken (a must). The VIEW: imagine twinkling sunshine, a lineup of surfers catching perfect waves, the Malibu pier…all while sipping their signature drink - The Endless Summer. Simply put, heaven. Their tiny gift shop has such a great selection of candles (our favorite), clothing, prints, and essential oils. Sunscreen too, if needed. We went home with 5 candles, 2 sweatshirts and the most adorable print. The complimentary morning coffee and electric car charging were unexpected, delightful touches. After checking out, we were informed of a forgotten item via chat - they even offered to ship it to us, if we weren’t able to return in-person. We were so grateful that they reached out before we left the L.A. area. As lovers of boutique hotels and beautiful experiences, this stay exceeded even our highest expectations. Each interaction felt genuine and remarkably kind. Thank you for taking such perfect care of us, Surfrider team. xo, Emily & Celia"

"An amazing experience. It is right in the heart of the Malibu coast / little downtown. They have taken time to maximize each sq ft of the room with great attention to detail. The roof top experience is incredible that is relaxing, great drink option and healthy food choices and very good customer service. There are multiple room options to fit your budget. Must stay in Malibu"

"Loved this little gem. Directly across from the Malibu Pier and a super busy surfing beach, we enjoyed a tranquil room wi th beautiful views of the beach. We decided to eat every meal at the rooftop restaurant since it was so wonderful. Fresh farm to table. Super friendly staff and very quiet. Not a scene but more of a hidden gem. I’d go back."
