PB hotel design editorial

At the northern end of St. Helena's main corridor, where the Mayacamas Mountains press close against the valley floor, a white-painted Queen Anne mansion dating to the late nineteenth century anchors a campus that grows progressively more contemporary as it extends toward the vines. That layering of eras is the central design proposition of Alila Napa Valley, which opened in 2021 with 68 rooms distributed between the restored Victorian house and two new three-story wings clad in standing-seam metal roofing and pale board-formed panels — a barn vernacular translated into something closer to California modernism. Interior designer Cory Grosser handled the transition between registers with considerable dexterity. Inside the mansion, coffered ceilings in light ash and tall leaded-glass windows set the register; the lobby lounge is furnished with curved linen sofas, oak spindle chairs, and a mix of mid-century and contemporary pieces arranged over wide-plank oak floors. Guest rooms in the newer wings adopt a cooler, more stripped-back palette — wide-plank floors in grey-washed oak, linen upholstered headboards, fire bowls on private balconies overlooking the vineyard rows. The suites in the Victorian building go further: cerulean blue walls, tongue-and-groove paneling in stained ash, freestanding soaking tubs positioned directly against garden-facing windows. The pool terrace, framed by teak screens and local stone columns, holds the two architectural moments in productive tension.

"Set back from Main St and surrounded on 3 sides by the Beringer estate, this hotel is a gem. A streamside deluxe king was large and beautifully appointed with the firepit on its deck made for romantic evenings after dinner. The grounds of the Hotel are gorgeous with the pool area being particularly attractive with direct views across the vines. Complimentary bikes (thank you Miguel) made for delightful cycle rides along the nearby trail by the vineyards with stunning views of Napa. Service is outstanding and the food is something to look forward to. Excellent cocktails were followed by stand out gourmet dinners at both Salvia Terrace or Violetto, the latter having 4 or 8 course menus. We took the 4 course and perfectly roasted Fogline Farm Hen with mediterranean fregola was a favourite. Wines were classy. We were allowed to sample a small amount of the suggested wine and reject it for another better option with grace from the sommelier. Breakfast, served at table on the terrace, had interesting, delicious and varied options with excellent accompanying coffee. Colin our dining terrace server who made our stay exceptional with personal service and just the right amount of easy, genuine conversation. Our only gripe... describing the streamside rooms (views across to the Rhine house) as “surrounding yourself in the soothing sounds of York creek” is misleading. It totally ignores the traffic noise from Highway 128. However, we would return here in a heartbeat… but next time to a vineyard view room."

"This hotel was a complete disappointment. The front desk staff completely unknowledgeable. When being seated in the restaurant there was left over food on table. The room was nice and clean, but overall not good. Will not go back. . ."

"I recently stayed at Alila Napa Valley in St. Helena for a business leadership retreat, and it was a wonderful experience. The property is absolutely beautiful, peaceful, and surrounded by incredible vineyard views. The accommodations were comfortable and well maintained, and the atmosphere provided the perfect balance between getting down to business and having an opportunity to relax and connect with colleagues. The staff was welcoming, attentive, and helpful throughout our stay. Alila was a great setting for bringing our team together, collaborating, and creating some memorable moments outside of our normal work environment. I truly enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend Alila Napa Valley for a leadership retreat, business gathering, or a relaxing Napa Valley getaway. Thank you to the Alila team for the hospitality!"

"We really enjoyed our stay here . The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful dinner there and the sommiler, who was this gorgeous young man with a great passion and knowledge for his craft. I loved the bedroom and products provided. The temperature were very high when there . Our pool visit was marred by maintenance work and very loud drills going on all afternoon. This was handled well after a chat with the General Manager. I would certainly return here if in the area again ."

"Given the price this place is a HUGE disappointment. It seems to be a renovated hotel only half done. The upscale finishes are lacking: the bathtubs are dull, cracked and the drain doesn’t work (but they give you an old deformed cracked rubber stopper as a fix). The outdoor lanterns look like they were purchased during Primeday Deals, the grounds walking up the stairs from St Helena Street evoke a frat house cleaned up just enough for parents weekend. Service is poor. The staff though pleasant was poorly trained and knew nothing about the hotel or the local area."
