PB hotel design editorial

At the northern end of St. Helena's main corridor, where the Mayacamas Mountains press close against the valley floor, a white-painted Queen Anne mansion dating to the late nineteenth century anchors a campus that grows progressively more contemporary as it extends toward the vines. That layering of eras is the central design proposition of Alila Napa Valley, which opened in 2021 with 68 rooms distributed between the restored Victorian house and two new three-story wings clad in standing-seam metal roofing and pale board-formed panels — a barn vernacular translated into something closer to California modernism. Interior designer Cory Grosser handled the transition between registers with considerable dexterity. Inside the mansion, coffered ceilings in light ash and tall leaded-glass windows set the register; the lobby lounge is furnished with curved linen sofas, oak spindle chairs, and a mix of mid-century and contemporary pieces arranged over wide-plank oak floors. Guest rooms in the newer wings adopt a cooler, more stripped-back palette — wide-plank floors in grey-washed oak, linen upholstered headboards, fire bowls on private balconies overlooking the vineyard rows. The suites in the Victorian building go further: cerulean blue walls, tongue-and-groove paneling in stained ash, freestanding soaking tubs positioned directly against garden-facing windows. The pool terrace, framed by teak screens and local stone columns, holds the two architectural moments in productive tension.

"Outstanding hotel, staff and experience. Perfect location with shops and restaurants walkable in St. Helena. Can’t imagine staying anywhere else on future visits to Napa Valley."

"This was our first stay in Napa for a late Valentine's Day retreat. The property was gorgeous, and we stayed in the Vineyard room on the third floor. My girlfriend loved the amenities (shampoo, bath salts, cookies), and we took advantage of the fireplace/soaking tub. Not to mention the heated bidet (flashbacks to Tokyo trip), sleeping drapes, and room lighting options. The atmosphere was simplistic yet modern and clean, very romantic. The service was top-notch and one of the best I have experienced. The valet was super helpful when bringing us our vehicle, offering to transport luggage, and giving us water. The front concierge was awesome in communicating with us, and prior to our stay, they had helped me create our itinerary for wine tasting. They gave us a card welcoming us to our 3rd Anniversary with a complimentary bottle of wine. Overall, the staff was so attentive and helpful (bringing us a toothbrush in the middle of the night, asking if we needed linen changed). I appreciate the staff's warmth immensely. I had booked this stay as a Hyatt Rewards member, and it was definitely worth the value. Highly recommend returning to this property, as the ambiance is quiet/relaxing. Location is great and close to various wine tastings, vineyards, and restaurants in St. Helena."

"This hotel is conveniently located. The views of Berringer vineyards from the terrace coupled with your own fire pit, was the ultimate cozy, and relaxing experience. We took advantage of their partnership with Berringer and walked next door to have a discounted wine tasting. (Go see Michael and Gigi) The rooms and service were all top notch. You're not getting snotty Napa service here. Everyone was very warm and friendly, especially at the bar and restaurant. Get the margarita...it won't awards for a good reason. We didnt plan on eating on property during our short 2 night stay, but we ate here twice because it was so enjoyable. If you're looking for a classy hotel without the snobby service, come to this place."

"My husband and I were so thrilled we stayed here. We only had one night, it was raining, and still the experience from start to finish was amazing. We had a drink in the bar, a fire pit on the porch by a brook and an amazing breakfast. The views all around were stunning."
