PB hotel design editorial

At the northern end of St. Helena's main corridor, where the Mayacamas Mountains press close against the valley floor, a white-painted Queen Anne mansion dating to the late nineteenth century anchors a campus that grows progressively more contemporary as it extends toward the vines. That layering of eras is the central design proposition of Alila Napa Valley, which opened in 2021 with 68 rooms distributed between the restored Victorian house and two new three-story wings clad in standing-seam metal roofing and pale board-formed panels — a barn vernacular translated into something closer to California modernism. Interior designer Cory Grosser handled the transition between registers with considerable dexterity. Inside the mansion, coffered ceilings in light ash and tall leaded-glass windows set the register; the lobby lounge is furnished with curved linen sofas, oak spindle chairs, and a mix of mid-century and contemporary pieces arranged over wide-plank oak floors. Guest rooms in the newer wings adopt a cooler, more stripped-back palette — wide-plank floors in grey-washed oak, linen upholstered headboards, fire bowls on private balconies overlooking the vineyard rows. The suites in the Victorian building go further: cerulean blue walls, tongue-and-groove paneling in stained ash, freestanding soaking tubs positioned directly against garden-facing windows. The pool terrace, framed by teak screens and local stone columns, holds the two architectural moments in productive tension.

"Very nice hotel, we had a vineyard view room with a fire pit which was great. The staff is great, very friendly and helpful. We’d definitely come back."

"We had Queen vineyard facing room. The rooms were awesome, the staff were awesome, the valet service folks were amazing. We loved the experience. The only ding was the overall check-in process: We had asked for higher floor vineyard view when I had booked. We reached there around 3PM, and they mentioned room should be ready soon and final inspection was in-progress, fast forward it was 4PM!! Then the room was a ground floor room. We had to let them know our dissatisfaction, and the staff worked hard to make it right. Nick in front desk was great!"

"My granddaughter and I had such a lovely stay at the Alila Napa Valley. From the moment we pulled up, everyone was so warm and welcoming. The valet team was especially kind and helpful, which immediately made us feel relaxed and taken care of. Our room was absolutely beautiful — gorgeous view, peaceful, luxurious, and the perfect place for a special grandmother-granddaughter getaway. We arrived to a very thoughtful welcome in the room including sparkling cider since she is too young g to drink. It made the trip feel even more memorable for both of us! I am very grateful to the Alila for a wonderful stay and would be happy to return! Don’t hesitate to book this beautiful property."

"Fabulous! Luxurious and welcoming. Stayed in a gorgeous corner suite with amazing views of a vineyard. Fire pit in balcony and soaking tub in other balcony. Super clean. Beautifully decorated. Could use a little more storage, but everything else makes up for it. Location is ideal for Napa Valley. Overall spectacular!"

"The Alila is a very nice resort right next to downtown St. Helena. We stay here often and always recommend this hotel to friends. We have learned that texting them when you are staying at the property works much better than trying to get someone to pick-up the photo. We were able to get immediate responses over texts, so we would highly recommend going this route when trying to reach someone."
