PB hotel design editorial

Planted into 8.5 acres of Sonoma hillside at Healdsburg's edge, where working vineyards climb directly behind the pool deck and valley oaks shade the garden paths between buildings, the campus that John Hill designed for Appellation Healdsburg opened in 2025 as one of California wine country's most deliberately land-rooted new properties. Hart Howerton served as architect of record through construction. The result is twelve low-rise buildings organized into two village neighborhoods, their massing clad in warm timber screens and anchored by coursed stone bases that echo the dry-stack walls common to Sonoma's older agricultural properties. Clerestory windows push light deep into the upper levels, while the gable-ended roofline of the rooftop bar frames a full wall of glazing directed at the vine rows beyond. EDG Interior Architecture & Design carried the agrarian logic indoors through white oak millwork, hand-glazed tile, and sliding barn doors, set against a palette of earthy gold and muted green that reads as a direct translation of the surrounding landscape into upholstery and paint. Guest rooms show the thinking clearly: leather-trimmed platform beds, cross-legged walnut side tables, and built-in banquettes with saffron-yellow bases sit beneath vaulted ceilings fitted with clerestory glazing. The rooftop bar goes further, lining its ceiling in reclaimed wood planks and filling the space with deep navy channel-tufted sofas and clusters of alabaster globe pendants, the vineyard hills filling the gable window like a painting that changes with the season.

"Whoever is rating this place less than a 5/5 is ridiculous. As someone who has stayed in some of the best hotels in the world this place is top notch. Not only is the staff attentive and friendly, but also strike a balance between easy going but professional. California vibes at its finest. Price point is appropriate. We can’t wait for them to open in Morgan Hill!"

"We had a wonderful experience. The hotel and grounds are beautiful, and the surrounding area is lovely to see during the day and in the evening. Service was spectacular. Drinks in the bar, and dinner at Folia made our trip amazing. We are locals and will spread the word. Will be back for happy hour at the bar, and to Folia for neighbors night dinners!"

"* Please note both myself and my travel advisor reached out to Appellation directly 3x each. No response. The letter I sent them is below. I also caution that 1) this place is at the far end of a large apartment complex and 2) depending on what time of year you visit, your view may be of dried brown twig vines -- unusual in that every other vineyard, including the one to the right of this place, are all bursting green. Why, because it is in harvest season (late July - August). To: David Emig, General Manager I had read about the Appellation in many places — and it looked incredible. I have been out of work for awhile, but saved up and budgeted a trip up north with my 2 dogs. My great travel agent suggested going with the enhanced property rate — I had planned to stay 3 nights and built a 3 day itinerary based on your location. He also advised you that I was arriving with pets. When I arrived after a long drive, around 6 or so on Thursday in July, I very specifically asked the person checking me in if I had an enclosed area for the dogs. She said you don’t offer that. That didn’t sound right as we had discussed that prior to my arrival. At that point, hours before it was dark outside, I tried calling on the house phone for assistance. No answer. I received a text after I checked in, enthusiastically welcoming me and to not hesitate to ask if I needed anything. I replied immediately: I need to switch rooms. No response. I called the external reservation number. No answer. I called Ken and he called and emailed you as well. No response. I then went to the room and spent an hour looking for alternate lodging. I decided to stay the night because by then it was dark, I was tired, and here we were. I had dinner. Early the next morning, maybe 7am, I finally got a response to my text. I was told that you could help with alternate lodging. I thought that meant booking me into a sister property, but in fact the person at the desk showed me a room with an enclosed patio on the second floor. It had been there all along. Exactly what I booked and asked for at check-in. I was offered me a free night if I kept my reservation, but by then I had found an alternate. And truthfully, I did not feel safe, knowing literally no one would be available if there were an emergency. Not that I was anticipating one, but the experience of not being able to reach anyone unnerved me. It is why I choose to stay in hotels vs. Air BnB’s — for safety. I had to upend my plans at the last minute, at significant cost and stress to me. Upon checkout, the person at the desk assured me they would apply my resort and breakfast credits. When I checked my bill at my next stop, they had not been applied. I had to call back. This time someone answered. I wrote all this in a lengthy review as you sent me a survey after my stay. No one reached out to me to even, on a human level, apologize. Of course, I received nothing, not even the courtesy of a response. This place is awful."
