PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a hillside above Rutherford at roughly 1,200 feet, where the Mayacamas Mountains fold down toward the valley floor and the vine rows of Napa stretch out to the horizon, Auberge du Soleil began its life not as a hotel but as a restaurant — Claude Rouas opened it in 1981, drawing on the sun-warmed informality of Provence to define what California wine country hospitality could mean. The 50-room property grew around that original dining pavilion, its clusters of adobe-toned cottages and maison suites stepping down the terraced hillside through olive groves and oleander, the whole compound arranged so that nearly every room claims an uninterrupted view across the valley. The architecture draws from Mediterranean vernacular — terracotta-washed stucco, deep-pitched shingled roofs with conical pavilion forms at the main lodge, exposed timber pergolas sheltering the dining terrace in Douglas fir — without ever becoming a pastiche. Interiors carry a warm, sun-bleached palette of sand, cream, and amber, with exposed beam ceilings, latticed wood headboards in pale oak, and freestanding soaking tubs positioned on private terraces so guests bathe with the valley spread before them. Wicker lounge chairs ring a limestone-edged pool framed by potted boxwood topiary and terracotta urns, the Provençal vocabulary translated into something unmistakably Californian — relaxed in its bones but precise in every detail.

About

Showcasing breathtaking views, Auberge du Soleil is the dream of French restaurateur, Claude Rouas. In 1981, with business partner, Bob Harmon, Rouas opened Napa Valley's first fine-dining restaurant, designed to reflect a taste of Provence in California wine country. The immediate success prompted the addition of "The Inn of the Sun" five years later. Nestled within a terraced, sun-kissed hillside amid 33-acres of heritage olive and oak trees, the hotel's 50 contemporary guestrooms and suites, effortlessly blend relaxed sophistication with understated elegance, earning a long-standing reputation as wine country's most iconic luxury property.

Auberge du Soleil, Auberge Resorts Collection Reviews

"While there are several exceptional luxury resorts in the Napa Valley, the Auberge du Soleil offers the most tranquil adult oriented experience you can find. We had a very relaxing long weekend getaway, and love the central location of the resort, making it easy to access all the wonderful activities in the valley. Dining at the Auberge du Soleil is wonderful, and breakfast should not be missed. The view, service, and food are all fantastic. Thanks to all the great staff, and a special call-out to Becky, Jackson, and Remy. You made our stay truly memorable, and we can’t wait to return!"

"Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford is my favorite place on earth, and I mean that sincerely. The experience just cannot be surpassed. The staff are thoroughly professional, welcoming, and accommodating. Everything about the place is magical. The restaurant and the bar provide delicious, imaginative choices with a varied, well-curated wine list. The spa and pool facilities are hedonistic pleasures. The view looking out over the valley, often with balloons rising in the distance, is breathtaking. I could (and do) spend hours just looking out over the surroundings and walking the trails. The recent addition of the lavender field and gathering platform will, I am sure, be beautiful when the lavender is in blossom. I look forward to every visit, and I start thinking about my next return as soon as I leave. I have been coming to Auberge du Soleil since the mid-80s. The entire experience only gets better with time, and I have many, many fond memories of being there. I just cannot recommend Auberge du Soleil enough. It is truly a magical place."

"I wanted to share a very special mom-daughter trip to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday and we were not disappointed. Everything about this trip was beautiful and memorable. The staff could not have made the entire experience more special. We felt cared for at every moment, our room was spacious, comfortable and cozy, service was exceptional, meals were excellent and we enjoyed the spa area thoroughly...we didn't want to leave!"

"The service is absolutely excellent. All of our meals and drinks were also fantastic. The location is beautiful. The cost is astronomical, however. We have stayed in places similar to Auberge at nearly 1/2 the cost. Is it worth it? I don't think so."
