PB hotel design editorial

Perched on a hillside above Rutherford at roughly 1,200 feet, where the Mayacamas Mountains fold down toward the valley floor and the vine rows of Napa stretch out to the horizon, Auberge du Soleil began its life not as a hotel but as a restaurant — Claude Rouas opened it in 1981, drawing on the sun-warmed informality of Provence to define what California wine country hospitality could mean. The 50-room property grew around that original dining pavilion, its clusters of adobe-toned cottages and maison suites stepping down the terraced hillside through olive groves and oleander, the whole compound arranged so that nearly every room claims an uninterrupted view across the valley. The architecture draws from Mediterranean vernacular — terracotta-washed stucco, deep-pitched shingled roofs with conical pavilion forms at the main lodge, exposed timber pergolas sheltering the dining terrace in Douglas fir — without ever becoming a pastiche. Interiors carry a warm, sun-bleached palette of sand, cream, and amber, with exposed beam ceilings, latticed wood headboards in pale oak, and freestanding soaking tubs positioned on private terraces so guests bathe with the valley spread before them. Wicker lounge chairs ring a limestone-edged pool framed by potted boxwood topiary and terracotta urns, the Provençal vocabulary translated into something unmistakably Californian — relaxed in its bones but precise in every detail.

About

Showcasing breathtaking views, Auberge du Soleil is the dream of French restaurateur, Claude Rouas. In 1981, with business partner, Bob Harmon, Rouas opened Napa Valley's first fine-dining restaurant, designed to reflect a taste of Provence in California wine country. The immediate success prompted the addition of "The Inn of the Sun" five years later. Nestled within a terraced, sun-kissed hillside amid 33-acres of heritage olive and oak trees, the hotel's 50 contemporary guestrooms and suites, effortlessly blend relaxed sophistication with understated elegance, earning a long-standing reputation as wine country's most iconic luxury property.

Auberge du Soleil, Auberge Resorts Collection Reviews

"The most spectacular resort that my wife and I have ever visited, with the best sweet and amazing views that we’ve ever had, even better than staying at Edgewood Tahoe Resort right on Lake Tahoe. Every single team member at Auberge Is amazing and we will absolutely be back the next time we have the opportunity to be in Napa. My wife and her girlfriends are back in August for their mommy getaway weekend that they do every year."

"La Reve - The dream that is Auberge du Soleil is a sun-washed, tranquil escape perched high on a hillside in the Rutherford AVA designed as a sublime escapade blending French-inspired elegance with California’s rustic charm. It is a sensory experience where time slows down, characterized by panoramic vineyard views, the fragrance of lavender, and the sound of silence, interrupted only by the rustling of mature olive trees. We ascended through a quiet hillside grove of silver-green olive trees, leaving the bustling world behind for an exclusive enclave. The air is warmer here, smelling faintly of citrus and dry earth. She loved our dinner on the Terrace at sunset overlooking the valley where the sky slowly turned into an interlude of ever changing soft yellow orange purple dark blue array of colors. It is a Michelin-starred experience, overlooking the Napa valley accompanied by exemplary culinary delights well supported by the extremely polite and knowledgeable staff. Many thanks to Mr. Frank and Mr. Zach for their kind attention while we were there for our anniversary. It is a place where you start planning your return the moment you leave, a timeless, good life experience that feels like it belongs in the South of France, yet is undeniably Californian. La Magnifique"

"Amazing property. One of the best views of the valley to go with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Service is impeccable and due to the minimal rooms on property, you feel pampered from the time you arrive to the time you leave."

"Had a wonderful dinner at Auberge du Soleil. My daughter had the 3 course dinner with wine pairings and I had the 3 course dinner (with a cocktail). The setting is beautiful; if you can get there to catch the sunset on the terrace, that alone makes it worth it! The food was beautiful as well as being exemplary and the service was absolutely outstanding. Would highly recommend!"
