PB hotel design editorial

Spread across twenty acres of the Los Carneros appellation, where Napa and Sonoma counties meet at the cool southern end of the valley, the idea behind Carneros Resort and Spa was deceptively simple: build something that looks as though it has always been there. The result is a compound of dark-brown board-and-batten cottages arranged like a working farm village, their pitched metal roofs and white-painted trim drawn directly from the agricultural vernacular of the surrounding wine country. The double-height lobby pavilion — visible in the images with its exposed king-post trusses painted white against dark-stained siding, clerestory glazing flooding the interior with vineyard light — anchors the property without overwhelming it. A pendant lamp suspended on rope from the ridge beam and wicker seating grouped around a dark stone-topped table keep the scale domestic rather than monumental. Guest cottages carry the agrarian mood indoors through vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, plantation shutters opening onto private garden terraces, and large framed botanical panels above the beds — pressed-flower compositions in sage, mustard, and blush that double as both headboard and artwork. Plaid wool throws at the foot of each bed and weathered grey timber nightstands complete a palette that feels assembled rather than designed. The restaurant's louvered pergola, lined with wicker armchairs at white-clothed tables beside a fieldstone fireplace wall, extends the property's commitment to a California farmhouse register that stops well short of rusticity.

"Our experience this year was very disappointing. Last year, we had an excellent experience, which is why we decided to come back. The rooms were upgraded, the staff was welcoming and helpful, and they even arranged a car for us. We felt truly taken care of. Unfortunately, this year was completely different. The front desk staff was not friendly and did not seem willing to listen to our concerns. When my husband approached the front desk, there was no one there, and when he tried to sit down while waiting, he was told not to sit. The staff member said she was helping someone, but the way the situation was handled made us feel unwelcome. We also did not receive the rooms we requested, and there were no complimentary escalades offered. When we asked for help booking a participating tour, the staff was not very helpful or accommodating. We returned because of how wonderful our experience was last year, but this time we did not feel welcomed or valued at all. The difference between last year and this year was significant. We hope management takes this feedback seriously and works on improving the guest experience, especially at the front desk."

"This was such a charming place! We had our own little cabin (with a periwinkle door!) and the most delightful yard with a fire pit to sit outside and play cards with my husband (ask me who won?!) Food was outstanding and the whole place just quaint and lovely."

"A few points of negative feedback regarding our stay at a 2 bedroom courtyard residence: (in isolation maybe each issue can be overlooked, but in aggregate, not great…) 1. An in use mouse trap next to kids board games cupboard?!? (Picture attached) 2. Giant critter hiding in our accommodations, which we did not let in/bc we’re very careful about keeping doors closed (critter picture attached). 3. Housekeeping came the last day, after we requested no housekeeping for our 3 night stay, since we are traveling with young children. It’s fine if hotel policy says housekeeping must come every 2 days, but please tell us, don’t say ‘ok, no housekeeping for 3 days’, then send housekeeping the last night 4. Check in day, at 345pm, we were told 10 minutes for room to be ready, we did not get keys until 415pm (we did receive credit for the tardiness), but this was an issue with restless kids. 5. The room we stayed in needs a major refresh: carpet, furniture, bathrooms etc etc, especially given the price point The one positive, was that the residence was very large"

"I love this resort. The room was spacious, the bathroom was large with a soaking tub and massive stand alone shower. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was very serene and peaceful. Even though this resort was in Napa, it was not pretentious at all and I felt so comfortable. I totally want to come back. The best part was the FARM restaurant that had the absolute best dessert ever."

"Still a beautiful resort, but in need of some attention We’ve stayed at Carneros Resort and Spa more than 20 times over the years, so it has always held a special place for our family. It’s why it’s disappointing to see that, while the resort remains beautiful, it’s beginning to show signs that it needs some investment and care. The grounds and gardens are as stunning as ever and are clearly very well maintained. We stayed in two adjoining cottages, which worked perfectly for our family, but the accommodation is starting to look tired. Simple things such as ill-fitting curtains and general wear and tear suggest the rooms could really benefit from a refresh. The food continues to be a highlight. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts at Boon Fly Café, and the breakfast team at Hilltop were consistently excellent, providing friendly and attentive service every morning. Unfortunately, housekeeping was the biggest disappointment of our six-night stay. On four occasions we had to chase for our room to be serviced. There were also evenings when turndown service had been completed, but the room itself had still not been properly cleaned, which isn’t what you expect from a luxury resort. What continues to set Carneros apart is its people. Every member of staff we encountered was warm, welcoming and genuinely helpful. A special thank you to Solange, who went above and beyond, and to the wonderful breakfast team at Hilltop for making each morning such a pleasure. Carneros remains a very special place with an exceptional team, excellent food and beautiful surroundings. We sincerely hope the owners invest the time and money needed to bring the accommodation and housekeeping standards back to the level that made this one of our favourite resorts. We’d love to see it return to its former glory."
