PB hotel design editorial

A century-old farmstead on Wohler Road in Forestville, deep in the Russian River Valley, gives the Farmhouse Inn its essential character — a cluster of butter-yellow clapboard buildings set against redwood-forested hills that reads less like a hotel than a working agricultural property that simply happens to have very good beds. The original Victorian farmhouse, with its black-shuttered windows and white-railed porch, anchors the entry court, where a reclaimed millstone fountain sits in decomposed granite and fieldstone walls divide the garden into a series of intimate passages. Newer barn-form structures behind — board-and-batten gabled volumes in the same warm yellow — were added as the property expanded to its current 25 rooms and suites, their steep pitches and exposed bracket details in careful conversation with the historic house rather than deferring to it. Inside, the interiors pursue a Sonoma farmhouse aesthetic calibrated for comfort rather than rusticity. Whitewashed shiplap ceilings with exposed beams rise over four-poster beds dressed in natural linens and wool throws; barn-door hardware in brushed steel slides across paneled frames; wide-plank white oak floors run through the suites. Stone fireplaces anchor the cottage rooms, with skirted armchairs and round reclaimed-timber coffee tables completing a palette that never strays far from cream, putty, and sage. The dining room, where antler-form wooden chandeliers hang over ladder-back chairs and floor-to-ceiling diamond wine racks, extends that warmth into something more deliberately convivial.

"After being long time guests, I’m sad to report that the hotel has lost its luster after being sold to the Foley group. They have implemented price increases by charging for things that used to be free (snacks and non-alcoholic drinks in rooms, and the shuttle to town, which costs more than an uber). They have also cut back service levels, removing food and drink service at the pool past 2, eliminating free coffee by the pool in the morning, and not consistently having a local winery provide a free tasting on site in the afternoon. The restaurant has fared worse. We had one of the worst meals I’ve ever had at a “fine dining” restaurant. The salmon was very fishy and served with oil soaked “grains.” The Caesar salad looking like it came form Costco, and the steak, while good, was egregiously overpriced. The service was sloppy and there were long waits for drinks. You should defiantly not go to the restaurant, which has changed chefs repeatedly with some simply walking off the job. Breakfast was also sub-par and extremely overpriced."

"Such a nice little gem- the place is pretty small, I think they said 25 rooms total, but they have all of the amenities you'd expect at a larger resort. The property includes a really nice restaurant where we ate breakfast and dinner, and is worth coming to for dinner on its own if you're looking for upscale dining. They also have a spa, and I was very happy with my massage. I loved the little touches- like in the lobby they have some scented soaps and other bath products to sample, and the concierge staff was really great. Definitely take advantage of their partner wineries- they have an extensive list of wineries, depending on what you're looking for, and most of the tastings are complimentary. We did one at Flambeaux, which was a private tasting for just us at the property that is normally reserved for wine club members. So we were able to experience this thanks to Farmhouse Inn, as normally the general public would not have been able to do the tasting experience that we did at Flambeaux."

"An incredibly beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. A five star experience reminiscent of Tuscany without the need to travel 5000 miles. The hotel has impeccable staff, a warm check in process and large comfortable rooms. The spa is first rate and the restaurant has a Michelin star. Everything about the experience was remarkable. Wine tastings at 430-530. S’mores by the fire pits in the evening. All and all worth it. Definitely worth coming. We will definitely return."
