PB hotel design editorial

Laser-cut Corten steel balcony railings patterned after tangled branches cascade down a white stucco facade draped in climbing vines — it is one of the more quietly persuasive arguments for biophilic design in California Wine Country hospitality. H2Hotel, which opened in 2010 in downtown Healdsburg, was designed by David Baker Architects with interiors by IDS and carries LEED Platinum certification, making it one of the greenest hotels in the country at the time of its opening. The 36-room, four-storey building draws its material language from the surrounding landscape: the undulating Corten roofline mirrors the oak-studded hillsides, while timber brise-soleil screens visible at the pool courtyard filter afternoon light in the manner of a vineyard canopy. Inside, the lobby deploys a Roche Bobois Mah Jong sectional in a riot of mismatched upholstery fabrics against board-formed concrete walls and polished concrete floors — an intentionally eclectic move that keeps the sustainable credentials from tipping into earnest austerity. Guest rooms are quieter and more resolved: dark-stained bamboo floors, sage-green channeled headboards set into walnut-toned wall panels, red-lacquered wardrobe casings with ash-veneer doors, and articulated black reading sconces that suggest mid-century workshop furniture. Plantation shutters filter the Sonoma County light throughout. The pool courtyard, framed by cedar slat screens and those signature branch-patterned railings overhead, anchors the property to its agricultural surroundings without resorting to rustic pastiche.

About

Striped bamboo floors, funky Peace Industry rugs and local art give the rooms character without excess fuss. Lush 100% Egyptian Cotton linens and robes have such come-hither appeal they could keep you in bed all day. All rooms have built in desks with ergonomic chairs and extra storage, plus seating areas both outside and in. The understated aesthetic is carried through to the bathrooms with simple lines, Heath ceramic tile and signature bath products crafted from natural ingredients. Feeling parched? Grab your glass carafe and head for the water bar on your floor for your choice of icy cold still or sparkling.

"I do. I was trying to figure out where to stay this weekend in HBG, which we love, and I kept reading reviews from people complaining about this or that about this hotel. Despite all the tiny people complaints we chose H2. So glad we did. This place is amazing, the rooms are chic, you can walk everywhere in town, the lobby is cool, they have a sparkling water tap in the hallways, rooms are big, they all have balconies. There's something wrong with everyone who complained on this thread. It's a perfect hotel. That being said, don't come here because we want it all to ourselves. lol"

"We stayed here for a wine trip to Sonoma County and thoroughly loved the hotel. Super convenient to everything in town and walking around and to the Russian River. The room was spacious and very clean and the staff couldn't have been kinder or more helpful. I will definitely recommend H2Hotel to my friends and family!"

"The best reason to stay at the H2 is its gold lead rating! A very environmentally friendly hotel, but not exactly user friendly. Our room (208) had a saggy bed, noisy plumbing, and not the best setup for our toiletries or luggage. Balcony was nice with 2 cafe chairs but no table. Street noise was a problem, could not leave doors open. Convenient location, valet street parking. Very nice and attentive staff! If I stayed in Healdsburg again, I might look for a different hotel. Our daughter and family had a room with 2 balconies and a small living room. Attached is a picture of their inside balcony."

"I am usually reluctant to give a bad review. I requested a quiet room, I was given a room across from the elevator. When I complained I was moved to a room facing the street and nearby the air conditioning units. Then I was promised twice a different room but never happened. I couldn’t sleep during our stay."

"Our second stay at this hotel in last 2 years. Love the ambiance, location, amenities. Had a suite this time with living area and a second bathroom, which was wonderful to have! Love the free valet parking. Breakfast is great and good value. Hotel is pricey but worth it!"
