PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into a narrow lot on Healdsburg's main commercial street, the five-story building that houses SingleThread Farm — Restaurant — Inn presents an exterior of charred wood cladding and steel-framed glazing that makes deliberate reference to the agrarian vernacular of Sonoma County without pretending to be a barn. Kyle and Katina Connaughton opened the property in 2016 with a brief that collapsed the distance between farm, kitchen, and inn into a single vertically organized idea — the rooftop garden visible in these images supplying herbs and vegetables directly to the eleven-room inn above and the Michelin three-star restaurant below. The interiors carry a quiet Japanese sensibility that reflects Kyle Connaughton's years cooking in Japan, each of the eleven guest rooms finished in whitewashed brick, herringbone oak floors, and draped French doors opening onto cast-iron balconies with views toward Dry Creek Ridge. Geometric paper-globe pendants hang above low platform beds dressed in muted linen, while leather-and-walnut lounge chairs add a mid-century California counterpoint. The restaurant dining room is lined floor to ceiling in dark-stained timber with coffered panels and brass-fitted lantern pendants, the grey wool upholstery and striped carpet keeping the warmth of the wood from tipping into heaviness. The rooftop at dusk — raised beds of chard and rose, string lights pulled against a darkening ridge — distills the whole proposition: farming and hospitality held in the same careful hand.

"As one of only 15 hotels in the US to receive three Michelin stars, and at a price starting at ~$2k per night after fees, my expectations were high. But unfortunately it doesn't seem the SingleThread Inn is held to the same high standard as the Restaurant. Overall, we had a great dinner and an okay hotel stay - and everyone on the SingleThread team was exceptionally kind and helpful. Food was phenomenal. But our stay at the Inn was disappointing, with many details large and small that were missed. For example, we were abruptly woken up before our alarms, 90 minutes before our breakfast was supposed to be served, because of a mixup with another room. Our "do not disturb" light was ignored. With only 5 rooms to service, I was surprised that such a critical mistake was made - and not a great way to start our day. Matcha machine in the room was broken. Consistent hiccups with housekeeping, including missing hand soap, missing plates. Tried requesting room service after their farm tour, and returned to the room to find bowls of melted ice cream and lukewarm espresso (I thought it would be self-explanatory that an affogato shouldn't be served unless ready to enjoy right away?). The website advertises Aēsop amenities, which we were really looking forward to, but that wound up being untrue. The team mentioned weeks ago that the website would be updated for accuracy, but it still hasn't. I know some of these are small details, but our experience was not what I was hoping for at a property of this caliber and price point. All the above was shared as feedback with the team via email and kindly acknowledged, but weeks later, it still isn't sitting right with me."

"This hotel could not have been in a better location - it's situated in the heart of downtown Healdsburg and was close to many other restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and small businesses. We were able to easily walk around to these places within 5 minutes of the hotel. The hotel had a great mix of old-school charm and modern touches (LOVED the toto toilets!) that made us feel at ease as we walked through the hallways and hung out in the study room. The room itself was very cozy and clean. We felt like were treated with care and professionalism and felt extremely comfortable throughout the trip. The room itself was amazing as the high ceilings made the room feel very spacious - the room itself felt very cozy with the fireplace, heat was at a good temperature during a colder February weekend, the bathroom heated floor tiles were amazing. The overall layout was great as there was plenty of space between me and my wife to hang out near the kitchen area with the dining table and the two lounge chairs in the study area. We could not say enough about the service - from start to finish, the staff helped direct us where to park our car, provided us welcome treats in the room, a car to drive around town and to other wine tasting areas, and also helped us bring our bags into the room from our car. We were able to easily communicate with the staff through text and they responded very quickly to all of our inquiries. The room also included complimentary drinks (water, alcoholic, and non-alcoholic) and snacks and the overall amenities were all high quality. Breakfast each morning of your stay is also complimentary and is simply AMAZING. You can choose between a traditional Japanese breakfast, an American breakfast, and an a-la carte menu - all of which tasted great. The rooms are on the pricier side but this might be the first time that my wife and I actually felt like our stay was worth every dollar - the food, service, level of detail and attention throughout the weekend - everyone made us feel welcome throughout. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and we would 1000% recommend anyone to stay here!"

"Everything about our stay was perfect! Some of the best food I’ve had and we’ve been to a number of other 3 Michelin star restaurants. In room dining was great as well. We got a chance to tour the farm as well which was an awesome experience."

"My second time staying at Single Thread and it was even better than the first time! The suite was beautiful, extremely comfortable and luxuriously serviced. I loved that it both had a balcony, so I could sit out in a leafy shaded area and watch the world go by in the cool late afternoons, as well as a fireplace to warm the room and make it feel cozy when I felt chilled in the later evening. The breakfasts served at Single Thread are probably the best I've ever had anywhere. Not to mention the delectable multi-course hot pot donabe dinner impeccably served in my room on the second night. And, of course, the highlight is that every inn guest is guaranteed a dinner seating at the 3-star Michelin restaurant downstairs. Every course was beautifully presented, carefully explained and tantalizingly delicious - thoroughly deserving the 3-star Michelin rating. And I can't say enough about how excellent the service was. My every need was anticipated, the courses came in a nice even flow with just the right amount of explanation, and every staff person was friendly and professional. Staying and eating here is definitely an experience of a lifetime, and I look forward to returning again!"

"We didn’t expect such a wonderful experience at the Inn !!! We needed a place to stay and wanted to guarantee a reservation at the restaurant. Much to our surprise the Inn was our favorite part of the experience!!! Helped along by our “fairy godmother” Mindy who took great care of us from start to finish! The rooms are over the top beautiful with incredible attention to detail and very generously stocked with fabulous wine, beer, non alcoholic drinks and lovely snacks - including the best homemade ice cream ever! And gorgeous glassware and plates and flowers. Love that. The bathrooms were ridiculously fun with toilet lids that lift for you on approach - haha! - and warm seats! Loved that little surprise. And you can order (fully complimentary) cheese and charcuterie boards or oysters to enjoy with the wine/beer up on the fabulous roof top deck. Incredible. And then there is breakfast - we also took that on the beautiful roof top - the Japanese breakfast is its own performance from a cart brought to your table with an extensive array of all kinds of delicious bites. Delicious and so much fun! What else ? We drove an electric car and Mindy made sure to share the staff charging port with us. And also my husband had an extended emergency business meeting after we checked out and she made arrangements for him to privately use the study for 3 additional hours. Incredibly helpful and very kind! Our only negative experience was poor turndown service our last night - not sure what happened there because everything else was literally perfection and beyond !"
