PB hotel design editorial

At the northern end of the Napa Valley, where Calistoga's geothermal springs have drawn visitors since the nineteenth century, a cluster of low-slung farmstead buildings arranged across eight acres makes the case that wine country resort design need not borrow its authority from Tuscan precedent. Solage, part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, was developed in 2007 with architecture by CCS Architecture and interiors by the late Orlando Diaz-Azcuy, whose San Francisco practice brought a spare, Californian modernism to the project that has aged considerably better than the rustic-Mediterranean idiom dominating the region at the time. The standing-seam metal rooflines and board-and-batten cladding visible from the motor court pull from agricultural vernacular without sentimentalizing it, while olive trees planted throughout the grounds reinforce the valley-floor character of the site. Inside the 89 studio cottages, the recent renovation has sharpened Diaz-Azcuy's original restraint into something warmer — linen-upholstered panel headboards with recessed display niches, white oak plank floors, slubby tweed throws, and freestanding wood-burning stoves that acknowledge the cold Calistoga nights without theatrical excess. The Solbar lounge, with its wire-globe pendants, Cherner bar stools, and walls of gray-washed timber opening onto a striped canvas terrace, carries the same ease. Out at the pool, teak-framed outdoor sofas and a long run of chaise longues face the Mayacamas range — the mountains doing the decorative work that lesser properties would assign to the interiors.

About

A century ago, Calistoga was a town centered around its bubbling natural hot springs and the beautiful weather of the Napa Valley. Today, it's a bucket-list destination for ardent wine lovers, foodies and wellness seekers for its particularly enviable version of the "good life." Solage was created to reflect its hometown spirit, drawing visitors as well as area vintners who come here after a day in the vineyards to relax over a glass of wine or a craft cocktail and connect.

Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection Reviews

"We came from the East Coast to explore wine country. The booking was effortless. The Concierge knew a lot and helped us structure the trip. When we arrived the reception was flawless. The rooms are large and California comfortable, with an earthy and classy feel. Solage is centrally located so we used it for the whole trip. We rented a car, but they provide amazing upper level Mercedes to use for your excursions for free as well. The gym is good for various workouts. There is a nice activity schedule including mixology, exercise, cooking and other things, but we just went out to explore. Breakfast at Solbar is worth it - ask if that can be wrapped into your reservation. They have good bikes to use, and the roads are nice for rides. There are biking/running trails. Spa services are good. The Hot Pools are big. The pool areas are neat. We have already referred friends here."

"There were six of us there to share in a very special vacation for our 60th birthday. We’ve never been to a resort where anything and that we wanted was perfect. We definitely would go back."

"We’ve always loved Solbar and have been loyal guests for years, but our most recent visit left us deeply disappointed. The food was well below the standard we’ve come to expect — so much so that we’re reconsidering our annual trips. The rooms also felt darker and more worn than we remembered, which added to the overall letdown. The pool bar menu continues to skew heavily spiced and rich, with very limited options for children. It’s genuinely sad to remove Solage from our list of favourite family destinations, and we hope the experience improves for future guests."
