PB hotel design editorial

Seven hundred and twelve acres of Carneros vineyard land gave Texas-based Overland Partners — led by Bob Shemwell, FAIA — both an extraordinary canvas and an exacting brief: build something that feels as if it has always belonged here. Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection, which arrived in 2022, answers that challenge through 135 detached cottages arranged across the estate in a contemporary farmhouse vernacular, their standing-seam metal roofs and warm timber cladding echoing the agricultural outbuildings that have long defined this corner of Napa Valley's southernmost appellation. The whole enterprise was designed to net-zero energy standards — an ambition that shapes every material decision, from the local stone and leather through to the passive solar orientation of each cottage. Inside, Clausen-Collaborative Interior Design kept the palette close to the land: raw linen, bleached oak ceilings, rattan pendants, and wool-and-cotton flat-weave rugs ground the guestrooms in a tactile warmth that never tips into rusticity. The expansive glazed walls fold away entirely, dissolving the boundary between bedroom and terrace, so that the vine rows become the view — not a backdrop but an active presence across every season. In the restaurant, exposed steel structure and cedar-lined cathedral ceilings carry the same agricultural honesty, the mid-century pendants and leather banquettes suggesting a California farmhouse with serious design literacy. The pool terrace, framed by young olive trees against the Mayacamas at dusk, makes the Carneros appellation feel less like wine country and more like a very specific, very considered way of living in a landscape.

Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection Reviews

445 reviews

"I've visited Stanly Ranch Auberge four times over the past few years and have previously written glowing reviews of the spa. After this most recent stay — a Mother's Day staycation with three other local moms looking to fully unwind — I find myself not being able to recommend an overnight stay on property. Check-In & Guest Experience Despite being the only guest at the desk with multiple staff present, there were no welcome drinks offered, no overview of the property, and no mention of the day's events or offerings. I had submitted one special request prior to arrival: an upgrade, which is part of my Amex FHR benefits. It was dismissed without discussion — I was simply told a Rambler upgrade wasn't available, despite the resort being nowhere near capacity and having dropped prices all week. When I proactively asked about an Arbor room, they accommodated, but placed us in Room 75, which has virtually no privacy — golf cart paths on three of its four sides. This is a recurring theme in reviews of this property, and I can now confirm it firsthand. Room & Key Logistics About an hour after check-in, we received a text that our room was ready and that keys could be delivered to us. We responded that we were at the spa pool — and then heard nothing for two hours. When we finally walked to the front desk ourselves, we were told the keys had been delivered to the spa, but spa staff hadn't brought them to us. A small miscommunication, but emblematic of the coordination gaps throughout the stay. Noise concerns: My morning on property was far from relaxing. A crew of 8+ weed whackers began vineyard maintenance around 7:30am in close proximity to the guest rooms, forcing my in-room breakfast patio moment indoors. When I headed to the spa for a 10:30am relaxation class, the crew had moved directly outside, making it nearly impossible to hear the instructor over the noise. This went on for four straight hours. With better planning — completing the area near the spa before it opened, then moving toward the rooms in the afternoon — this noisy disruption could have been avoided or mitigated. Spa Service Cancellation I received a call just one hour before a scheduled spa service informing me the attendant wouldn't be available. No offer to reschedule, no gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience was disappointing. In-Room Details The in-room breakfast arrived with a missing dish. The mini fridge drawer ran loudly throughout the night. Small things — but they add up. The Spa Itself (Still a Star) To be fair: the spa facilities here are genuinely gorgeous. Better than any bay area or other Auberge property I've visited, hands down. But even here, small touches that elevated past visits were missing — the quality wooden cups in the heated area replaced by hot stainless steel, no warm weighted neck towels, and shower amenities that were unstocked or empty. The Bright Spots The food on property remains excellent, and the ranch hand staff were consistently warm and friendly throughout. Bottom Line Stanly Ranch has the bones of a truly exceptional resort, I work in construction and have always appreciated the eye for detail and finishes. This is a resort that not only photographs well, but the construction details are executed top notch which I really appreciate. This stay revealed too many gaps in execution to book another overnight in the future — especially for guests expecting the attentive, restorative experience that the property promises. I'll return for the spa, but I'd encourage others to explore other Napa Valley options for overnight stays until the guest experience catches up to the facilities."

"Everyone on property were always with a smile and very friendly. Lorenzo or Antonio would be there to welcome us back or help us to our room. Breakfast and Dinner at Bear were AMAZING! Vida is a great bartender and makes the best drinks! Food was coursed out well and I never felt rushed. Food was always hot which you would think it not need to be mentioned, but there have been so many times at restaurants where the food is cold or luke warm. On the go, Gavel was fantastic. Great baristas making HOT lattes and the lavender bun is a must! Looking forward to my next stay with the team!"

"Stanly Ranch is fantastic. We stayed at the residences, which were thoughtfully designed for all types of groups. It is conveniently located in Napa near the airport and easy to get around. The rooms were exceptionally clean and attended to and included amenities and check in gifts (pastries, snacks, drinks) that made our stay excellent. Highly recommend the spa as it is priced reasonably for a luxury resort."
