PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a hillside in Laguna Beach where the coastal bluffs begin their drop toward the Pacific, a cluster of white clapboard cottages arranged around sculpted cloud trees and terracotta-tiled courtyards gives Hotel Joaquin the feeling of a private compound that happened to open its gates. The property, which comprises around 30 rooms spread across low-slung two-storey buildings, was reimagined by interior designer Vanessa Alexander, whose approach consistently favors the accumulated warmth of a well-traveled personal collection over the coordinated polish of conventional hotel design. Alexander's interiors carry that sensibility into every room: warm-toned oak beds with simple platform frames, linen-upholstered daybeds, rattan chairs punched with cobalt cushions, and walls hung with abstract textile works in terracotta and rust. The communal lounge is the most fully realized expression of the concept — a wood-slat ceiling overhead, herringbone terracotta tile underfoot, a record player centered on a low oak table surrounded by vinyl, Pierre Jeanneret-adjacent cane chairs, and an eclectic grouping of ceramics, brass objects, and original art that suggests a French-Californian creative's living room rather than a managed hospitality space. Outside, the stepped terraces descend through clipped topiary to a pool deck with teak loungers and canvas umbrellas, the Pacific visible beyond the rooftops, close enough to feel like the point of the whole arrangement.

"This is a hidden gem, until its not! Loved the staff, owner and food. Andre was amazing, stop by and see him at the bar if you are a local."

"My husband grew up in Laguna so we visit often and sometimes try to sneak away for a night or two for ourselves and the Hotel Joaquin was perfect for this. We loved the intimate size of the hotel and the decor. Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had a great visit. I loved that we had the option to get the resort fee or not. We choose to get it and are so glad we did b/c the breakfast was soooo good. And we loved that they have a little bar. The overall atmosphere was very chill and quiet but in a cozy way. Everyone just seems happy to be there. The pool was the perfect temp and we loved the huge loungers. The beds are super comfortable and we loved having a record player in our room. And the beach is just a couple blocks away. Just overall a fantastic stay! Thank you!"

"The staff made my trip worth repeating. Extremely hospitable. It was my first experience staying at a boutique hotel and now it will be where I exclusively stay when visiting Laguna."

"I had been wanting to stay here forever and at the very last minute I was able to stay the night and take my 16 year old daughter for a night away. From booking to arrival to departure I was so appreciative of the staff's friendliness. I had to leave my daughter to attend a work meeting for a couple of hours, and they checked in on her, made suggestions and helped her feel right at home. I am a design nerd, so I love all the details throughout, from the art, the records, the curation of books and treats in the room. The pool was delightful and have to say the chips and Guac poolside were a 10! Location is great and just a short walk into town. Already dreaming of a quick getaway with my husband."
