PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a hillside in Laguna Beach where the coastal bluffs begin their drop toward the Pacific, a cluster of white clapboard cottages arranged around sculpted cloud trees and terracotta-tiled courtyards gives Hotel Joaquin the feeling of a private compound that happened to open its gates. The property, which comprises around 30 rooms spread across low-slung two-storey buildings, was reimagined by interior designer Vanessa Alexander, whose approach consistently favors the accumulated warmth of a well-traveled personal collection over the coordinated polish of conventional hotel design. Alexander's interiors carry that sensibility into every room: warm-toned oak beds with simple platform frames, linen-upholstered daybeds, rattan chairs punched with cobalt cushions, and walls hung with abstract textile works in terracotta and rust. The communal lounge is the most fully realized expression of the concept — a wood-slat ceiling overhead, herringbone terracotta tile underfoot, a record player centered on a low oak table surrounded by vinyl, Pierre Jeanneret-adjacent cane chairs, and an eclectic grouping of ceramics, brass objects, and original art that suggests a French-Californian creative's living room rather than a managed hospitality space. Outside, the stepped terraces descend through clipped topiary to a pool deck with teak loungers and canvas umbrellas, the Pacific visible beyond the rooftops, close enough to feel like the point of the whole arrangement.

"We loved our time at Hotel Joaquin! We stayed in the Soleil room and it was lovely. Great views and it felt extremely private and about as quiet as could be for a small boutique hotel where everything is close by. The lobby and outdoor hangout area next to it was great and they have a great selection of games. Drink/cocktail/NA selection was awesome. Pool is so lovely and peaceful. Overall we had a wonderful relaxing time and would definitely return! A hidden gem with a perfect location- still within walking distance to restaurants and shops but away from the business of the main streets."

"A lovely boutique hotel in a fantastic location; however, the service has declined. No breakfast or coffee delivered to the room. No housekeeping offered. Texts to the front desk went unanswered."

"Several friends stayed here on the occasion of a birthday dinner party held on New Year's Eve at the hotel. We reserved a large block of rooms and everyone enjoyed their stay. The dinner party was catered and the food was excellent. It was raining and the dinner had to be moved 'inside' to what is the lobby area. There were other hotel guests who were most gracious while we had our meal in the space. Location is ideal for walking and dining opportunities are near by. The hotel does not serve breakfast or other meals. It does have a bar and coffee available in the am."

"Beautiful boutique hotel in Laguna. Just returned from a fabulous weekend. Steps from Shaw's cove which is a stunning beach. Breakfast was outstanding. (how do you get the eggs to taste so good?) Stayed in room Ciel with stunning ocean views. Used the heated pool and a couple beach toys. Very friendly staff. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay - we will be back! (Cant remember the blond guys name at the bar/breakfast but he was delightful- really friendly)"
