PB hotel design editorial

Few Bay Area landmarks carry the mythological weight of the Claremont's founding story: the original structure was reportedly built straddling the Berkeley-Oakland city line so that alcohol could be served on whichever side local ordinance permitted. That pragmatic ingenuity aside, the white-painted Victorian castle rising from the eucalyptus-covered Oakland Hills is a genuinely commanding piece of early California resort architecture, its steeply pitched gabled rooflines, dormers, and central clock tower assembled in a Free Classic style that architect Charles Dickey completed in 1915. The Claremont Resort & Club has grown considerably since — today it holds 276 rooms across multiple wings — but the original building's silhouette, seen glowing against a lavender East Bay dusk, remains one of the more romantically improbable sights in American hospitality. Interior renovations over the years have brought the guestrooms to a palette of lavender, warm taupe, and gold, with trellis-patterned carpets, dark-stained wood furniture inlaid with brass geometric motifs, and floral draperies that keep the tone garden-fresh without veering into chintz overload. The bar at Limewood maintains a more grounded register — a curved cherry-wood counter topped in honed concrete, white subway tile behind the back bar, pressed-tin ceiling panels overhead, and hexagonal stone floor tile underfoot, the whole composition landing somewhere between a grand hotel bar and a well-appointed neighborhood institution. The outdoor pool deck, framed by the white clapboard spa pavilion and the hillside building above, makes the resort's scale feel surprisingly intimate under California light.

"I've been a member of the Claremont Club for several years and want to share an honest perspective for anyone considering joining or booking a stay. The grounds and historic building are genuinely beautiful, and the location is hard to beat. That said, prospective members should go in with eyes open. Dues have risen roughly 30% over the last three years — a 10% jump, then 6%, well above both inflation and the club's historical pattern of ~3% annual increases. During that same period, amenities and services have been reduced rather than expanded. The General Manager's letter announcing the most recent increase alluded to upcoming projects but did not specify what they are or when members would see them. What makes this particularly frustrating is the ownership structure. Unlike most private clubs, members here have no equity stake, no board representation, and no formal mechanism to weigh in on how dues are spent or what gets prioritized. There is also a substantial non-refundable initiation fee, which makes leaving costly and, I suspect, is part of why management feels comfortable raising rates without engaging members. I'd love to be writing a different review. If the club established a member advisory committee with real input into capital priorities and communicated transparently about where dues go, I'd update this. Until then, I'd encourage anyone considering membership to ask pointed questions about governance, fee trajectory, and which amenities have been cut in recent years before signing."

"We recently hosted a fairly last minute event at the Claremont, and it went off without a hitch. Within a week, we went from first contact to execution with no hiccups. Everyone was incredibly accommodating throughout the process, and we truly couldn't have done it elsewhere. In fact, several of the other venues we reached out to got back to us AFTER we hosted the event. The Claremont was within hours. If you've been to this resort, you'll understand the beauty and cache that accompanies it. Surprisingly, it was less expensive than a few of the other less attractive venues that HAD gotten back to use in time. All of that said, none of this would have been possible without the incredible support of Kishara, Ceasar, and James. Kishara worked with us from first contact all the way to conclusion, ensuring we selected the space and amenities appropriately, and provided additional touches along the way. Cesar provided attentive service during the event, keeping, the food and drink available, the space clean, and attendees happy. James made certain our food and beverage were on time and delicious. Once again, our experience at the Claremont was outstanding. Will look to host another event there in the future."

"Parking is expensive and a real pain. You have to load an app. (Who really wants to have another app on their phones that requires all your personal information?) Also, the hotel fees are very high. Even if you don't use the gym or pool, your credit card will still be charged. Seems like a real rip off. Stay somewhere else."
