PB hotel design editorial

Few Bay Area landmarks carry the mythological weight of the Claremont's founding story: the original structure was reportedly built straddling the Berkeley-Oakland city line so that alcohol could be served on whichever side local ordinance permitted. That pragmatic ingenuity aside, the white-painted Victorian castle rising from the eucalyptus-covered Oakland Hills is a genuinely commanding piece of early California resort architecture, its steeply pitched gabled rooflines, dormers, and central clock tower assembled in a Free Classic style that architect Charles Dickey completed in 1915. The Claremont Resort & Club has grown considerably since — today it holds 276 rooms across multiple wings — but the original building's silhouette, seen glowing against a lavender East Bay dusk, remains one of the more romantically improbable sights in American hospitality. Interior renovations over the years have brought the guestrooms to a palette of lavender, warm taupe, and gold, with trellis-patterned carpets, dark-stained wood furniture inlaid with brass geometric motifs, and floral draperies that keep the tone garden-fresh without veering into chintz overload. The bar at Limewood maintains a more grounded register — a curved cherry-wood counter topped in honed concrete, white subway tile behind the back bar, pressed-tin ceiling panels overhead, and hexagonal stone floor tile underfoot, the whole composition landing somewhere between a grand hotel bar and a well-appointed neighborhood institution. The outdoor pool deck, framed by the white clapboard spa pavilion and the hillside building above, makes the resort's scale feel surprisingly intimate under California light.

"Beautiful property… and the BEST part of our check in experience was the amazing professionalism and kindness of Effie!!! She made us feel like we would always come back here! Thank you, Effie!!"

"More like a Motel 6 experience at close to $500/night for a basic room. But no, actually, we would have had a working air conditioner and a window that opened at Motel 6! A washcloth dipped in a bucket of ice throughout the night took the edge off a room that was no cooler than 76 degrees. Even the two maintenance men shrugged their shoulders and said it’s an old HVAC system. The Desk Clerks ignored us (the only people left) at check-in w/o acknowledgment until I finally asked after waiting patiently for 5 minutes if we could please check in. They didn’t pick up the phones in the evening forcing me to go down in my robe only to find them standing around chatting. Don’t bother eating there. Food was over-priced and tasteless. $90 for two room service cheese pizzas that perfectly exemplified the term Cardboard Pizza! For your $50/day resort fee you’ll share the pool and locker room with their 1600 private club members. Don’t even bother on the weekend! But I do have one nice thing to say. The towels were especially soft."

"Effie helped me find what I needed. She is so amazing. I have stayed here many times before even though I live down the street for stay vacations. I also visit the Claremont regularly. I always look for Effie since I know she will take care of me."

"The Claremont Resort is really an exquisite place to stay for all the reasons in their brochures. But I want to say their service is extraordinary. In a fit of absent-mindedness, I left behind a nice shirt in my room. Not only did they track it down, but they Fed-Exed it to me. Amazing!"

"My wife and I had a wonderful weekend getaway at the Claremont Hotel. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome and the entire property was beautiful and relaxing. One of our favorite amenities was the incredible fitness facilities. Having access to both the indoor and outdoor gyms made it easy to stay active while still enjoying a vacation. The grounds and overall atmosphere were perfect for unwinding. The highlight of our stay was the charcuterie board-making class hosted by Marissa and Chef Joseph. They were engaging, knowledgeable, and made the experience both fun and interactive. We learned great techniques, enjoyed delicious ingredients, and left with a beautiful board and wonderful memories together. We highly recommend the Claremont Hotel for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway with exceptional amenities and unique experiences. We can't wait to come back!"
