PB hotel design editorial

Spread across 220 acres in the Topatopa Mountains' shadow, a compound of white-plastered, terracotta-roofed buildings carries the Mission Revival vocabulary that architect Carleton Winslow established when the Ojai Valley Inn first opened in 1923 — the same Spanish Colonial idiom he helped codify for the Santa Barbara region after the 1925 earthquake made it civic policy. That architectural grammar has proven remarkably durable: subsequent expansions read as natural extensions rather than additions, the low-slung volumes and arcaded walkways stepping through the valley floor in a rhythm calibrated more to the surrounding eucalyptus groves than to any resort formula. The interiors navigate the perennial challenge of updating a nearly century-old property without diluting its character. Guest rooms pair exposed wood ceiling beams and arched French doors — Talavera-tiled fireplaces intact in many configurations — with upholstered headboards in grey linen and abstract-patterned area rugs that ground the palette in contemporary California restraint. The main dining room takes the structural bones of the original building seriously: dark-stained coffered ceilings and arched steel-framed windows frame a working stone fireplace, the furniture mixing loose-back upholstered chairs with craft-inflected oak tables. The pool terrace, lined with navy market umbrellas and chaise longues in bleached teak, frames the Santa Ynez mountains directly — a view that has changed very little since Winslow first arranged these buildings to face it.

"Phenomenal resort. However, we were not informed when my wife and I made our reservation that the grounds were filled w huge numbers of kids and dogs. Absolute chaos and we were unable to find seating on the grounds to enjoy the grounds. We spent 95% of our time out of the resort. We found it impossible to get a reservation for a meal, enjoy any peaceful moments, and get a single spa reservation. Be aware of the above!"

"We loved everything about our experience here. The rooms were beautiful, the grounds were impeccable, and the Pixie Pool was perfect for the kids. The Guest Shuttles took quite a while to move us around the property, but otherwise an absolute home run of a trip!"

"My room was in the "oldest building on the property"(Wallace Neff rooms) and the air conditioning was terrible. Stay away from that building. They had to bring up fans to get decent air circulation. Also - those who say the property is haunted are not lying. There is just weird energy! But more importantly, the level of service isn't what you would expect at these prices. And I stay all over the world as a solo traveler in VERY nice spots. The spa was just okay. Stay away from the "15-minute foot treatment add-on" to your massage. It was $65(!) for hot towels during 10 of those 15 minutes and 5 minutes of a massage. What a waste of money! The food was decent. I was just not a fan for the location, the prices and how a resort of this level should have been!"

"Beautiful grounds, multiple pools, very good spa services. Spa itself is dated - lacks cold plunge and not enough sauna space and jets didn’t work in hot tub. Food we had at spa and salad at indigo pool was very mediocre- you’re better off eating in town. Service was good and staff friendly. Importantly the bedroom was SO comfortable- bed was among the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on. Spacious room and well appointed. Thermostat worked etc. great location to town too. Overall recommend but maybe not quite as luxurious spa facility as I would have expected but we had a great trip overall."

"Having heard about this resort for decades, I had a vision of what it might be like, it exceeded all my expectations! The resort is beautiful, there are many options to fill one's day - spa, hiking, go into Ojai, hanging out at a firepit, multiple restaurants, gold, tennis... Normally, a place like this would feel like a convention hotel (although I did see they had some business event during the week) and have a mass appeal vibe. That is not the case at all, OVI is elegant, the staff is outstanding from the moment you drive up to the moment you leave, and every moment in-between. I will go back, hopefully sooner than later!"
