PB hotel design editorial

Weathered Cor-Ten steel cladding along Palm Canyon Drive announces ARRIVE Palm Springs with the confidence of a building that knows exactly what it is — a low-slung, two-storey compound in the Uptown Design District that draws on the desert modernist tradition without simply reprinting it. Opened in 2016 and developed by the ARRIVE Hotels group, the property was designed by Mark Nichols of DesignAgency, whose 32-room scheme wraps corrugated rusted steel panels around wood-clad volumes set back behind CMU block garden walls, climbing vines threading up the masonry in a gesture that softens the industrial material palette without diluting it. The San Jacinto Mountains rise directly behind, framing the whole composition in a way that feels less like scenery than structural logic. Inside, the rooms deploy a mid-century vernacular updated with enough textural friction to feel current rather than nostalgic — tufted grey linen headboards, walnut writing desks with tapered legs, leather Chesterfield chairs, and open pipe garment rails that replace the closet with something more honestly provisional. Brass pendant lights hang on exposed red cords, a diamond-pattern wool throw pulls burgundy into the otherwise cool palette, and wood-plank ceilings pitched at a clerestory height draw in palm fronds and desert sky above the bed. The pool terrace, lined with white loungers and tall Washingtonia palms glowing amber at dusk, has the easy sociability of a well-edited backyard rather than a resort amenity.

"I had the single most appalling experience at this hotel. I was staying at the Arrive for work. I thought the hotel was very cute. My room had a few issues (the steamer, which I had planned on using, didn't work; the curtains in the bathroom area were broken and wouldn't close, and the handle kept coming off the fridge). I work in the event world, which means incredibly long hours. The Saturday I was there, I worked 22 hours, so after coming back to my room at 8:30am on Sunday morning, my plan was to sleep until the late afternoon. I came back, put the "do not disturb" sign on my door, took a shower, and went to bed just before 9am. Around 9:30am, I could hear housekeeping outside my room. I tried to ignore it as I heard a tap on the door. After all, my "do not disturb" sign was up. Around 10:30am, I heard someone trying to open my door from the outside. Again, I tried to block it out as I knew getting up would disrupt my attempt to sleep even more. Around 11:15am, another knock on my door. Extremely frustrated, I got up to open the door to see housekeeping there. I said, "Yes?" and she just looked at me, so I point at the "do not disturb sign." She nodded, so I closed the door and went back to bed. Around 12:15, there was yet ANOTHER knock on my door. I again attempted to ignore it. A little after 1pm, massive banging on my door. Now angry, I got up to open the door with a, "WHAT??" There was a middle aged woman and man there. The woman barks at me, "I'm the manager of this hotel. Check out was 11am. You can't be here." I say, "I have this room through tomorrow." She continues rudely saying, "No you don't. You need to leave immediately." I say, "I'm here for work. My company booked this room. Please call them." Again rudely she says, "No. You need to leave." I say, "You need to call the people who booked this room. I'm here for work. I got in at 8:30am this morning and your people have knocked on my door 5 f*cking times. This is ridiculous." She starts to open her mouth again so I say, "I'll be gone in an hour," and shut the door. I get in touch with my work to tell them they may be receiving a call from the hotel and what happened. They (my work, not this hotel or the incredibly rude manager) apologize and say that I am booked through Sunday. I have never, in all my life, experienced such a rude manager. I can't believe she has a job there. Let's say that there was an issue and they did actually think I was supposed to check out. If check out is 11am, why did two people knock on my door before 11am when I had a "do not disturb" sign on my door? Why on earth did no one try calling me or my company and instead they banged on my door and rudely told me to leave? This was truly the worst experience I have ever had a hotel."

"Overall, we had a great stay at ARRIVE Palm Springs. The rooms were cute and a perfect size for two, with comfy beds and good shower pressure. The decor is fun and trendy, and the pool and hot tub were definitely highlights. Poolside food was delicious. The best part of our stay, though, was the poolside service by Brandon who was amazing. He was extremely attentive, friendly, and funny. He really made our whole experience. It’s rare to come across someone who goes out of their way like that, and it didn’t go unnoticed. Since it’s a smaller boutique hotel, it can sometimes take a minute to grab someone’s attention, but once you do, everyone is helpful and accommodating. That said, Brandon truly stood out and made the stay feel extra special. Always available and wanting to help all guests. Great spot for a quick weekend getaway. Also loved having a coffee shop and ice cream spot right on the property, such a nice bonus!"

"Only booked one night because we were going to keep heading northeast from Joshua Tree National Park but after wonderful stay that night, decided to drive back from Joshua Tree and stay another night. Enjoyed it that much. Nice clean comfortable room. Great black out blinds too. Staff wonderful and helpful. Breakfast was really good but did take a long time in getting. Hot tub amazing! Guessing that one cook and just one server. Definitely could step up their game there! Only comment that kept my review from being a 5."

"ARRIVE is an outstanding place to stay when visiting Palm Springs. We loved everything about it, starting with the very thoughtful, kind and considerate staff who make you feel welcome when you arrive a bit sad when it's time to leave. The rooms are beautifully and comfortably designed. Clean and quiet with great Sand & Stone products. Conveniently located to the heart of Palm Springs in the Uptown/Arts District. The total vibe and atmosphere is very relaxed with a beautiful pool to hang out at and relax after a day of hiking or just enjoying a little fun in the sun. We've been raving about ARRIVE to family and friends and highly recommend if you're looking for a cute place run by great people, led by Kim specifically who is a joy."
