PB hotel design editorial

Mid-century Palm Springs real estate has a habit of concealing remarkable pedigrees behind modest stucco facades, and the compound that became the Avalon Hotel & Bungalows is no exception. The original structures date to 1938, built in a Spanish Colonial Revival register with terracotta roof tiles and whitewashed walls that have aged gracefully through successive ownerships and renovations. Kelly Wearstler's redesign — her work here preceded her ascent to near-ubiquitous status in American luxury hospitality — established the graphic monochrome vocabulary that still defines the property: white canvas cabanas edged in black Greek-key trim, striped charcoal carpeting, plaster medallions mounted above lacquered black headboards, and chain-hung lanterns that mix industrial and classical references without quite committing to either. The pool terrace, manicured into tightly clipped hedgerows and axial stone paths, carries the disciplined geometry of a formal garden transplanted into the desert, bougainvillea providing the only chromatic rupture. Inside the 83-room property, the rooms divide between the graphic drama of the main building — brass candelabra chandeliers, mid-century abstract paintings in ochre and black — and the all-white bungalow suites, where linen curtains, plaster medallions, and white tile floors create something closer to a bleached Mediterranean calm. The restaurant maintains the same tonal contrast: cream banquettes, ebonised tables, globe pendants suspended on rope, and a salon wall of decorative mirrors and plates arranged in deliberate asymmetry.

Avalon Hotel & Bungalows Palm Springs Reviews

"We have stayed at the property several times. In each case, we have had a spacious and well-appointed bungalow with a fireplace. We love having the extra space of a bungalow. During our latest stay, all employees were cheerful and helpful and acted like they wanted to be there and to have happy guests at the hotel. Food at the hotel was excellent - one of the reasons that we stay at the hotel. Service also was excellent. Room service was fast and friendly, and the food was great. Again, the food service, including room service, is one of the reasons that we stay at the hotel. There also are three pools, and since we like to get some sun on holiday, it helps to have several pools. If I have a complaint, it’s minor: Do not count on receiving an early check-in. In each visit, we’ve had to wait until the normal check-in time. This was not a problem for us. We had a nice lunch and then relaxed on lounge chairs by the pool. But I’d plan for checking in at the normal time. Lastly, the location is good - in the so-called Historic Tennis Club neighborhood - pretty, safe, and within walking distance of many sights and services in the center of town."

"We are huge fans of the Avalon, this is our favorite place to stay in the area. We hosted our wedding here two years ago and continue to have such a wonderful experience every time we go back. The staff is wonderful, the rooms are spacious, the food is delicious, the pools are perfect, and we love that the Avalon is pet-friendly."

"If you’re looking for the classic Palm Springs experience, look for further than The Avalon. We stayed in Room 103, which is a 1 bedroom bungalow (worth it). The pool was right out side. The pool attendant was fantastic and very attentive. Our room host was also very good with housekeeping. Our bartender in the bar on Friday night was very engaging and pleasant. The sauna, cold plunge, and hot tub were excellent. We had a fantastic time. Will recommend to our people. Awesome. Don’t hesitate to make this hotel your Palm Springs destination."

"This property looks charming on its website and in person. But appearances can be deceiving. We booked five nights in a Regency room and we’re pretty sure we got the hotel’s worst room -- (avoid room 301). I regret not upgrading. We had no views. Just outside our room, busy housekeepers were stationed, with tools in the hallway 24/7. (Not their fault - just unfortunate placement of vacuum and linen closet. Staff were kind.) Anyway - that room was not worth the $500/nt. The restaurant Chi Chi served a decent but modest breakfast selection. The grounds were pretty and well maintained, maybe a touch tired."

"First time staying here and will definitely return. The 1-bedroom bungalow had everything you needed, living room, full kitchen and outdoor patio. The property is small and easy to make your way from the different pools and the lobby. The lobby had a great bar and great service. They set us up by the pool with Rosé and cocktails and it made the experience a lot of fun. Housekeeping was on it and never came back to an un-made room. Solid experience and will definitely re-visit the Avalon again."
