PB hotel design editorial

Mid-century Palm Springs real estate has a habit of concealing remarkable pedigrees behind modest stucco facades, and the compound that became the Avalon Hotel & Bungalows is no exception. The original structures date to 1938, built in a Spanish Colonial Revival register with terracotta roof tiles and whitewashed walls that have aged gracefully through successive ownerships and renovations. Kelly Wearstler's redesign — her work here preceded her ascent to near-ubiquitous status in American luxury hospitality — established the graphic monochrome vocabulary that still defines the property: white canvas cabanas edged in black Greek-key trim, striped charcoal carpeting, plaster medallions mounted above lacquered black headboards, and chain-hung lanterns that mix industrial and classical references without quite committing to either. The pool terrace, manicured into tightly clipped hedgerows and axial stone paths, carries the disciplined geometry of a formal garden transplanted into the desert, bougainvillea providing the only chromatic rupture. Inside the 83-room property, the rooms divide between the graphic drama of the main building — brass candelabra chandeliers, mid-century abstract paintings in ochre and black — and the all-white bungalow suites, where linen curtains, plaster medallions, and white tile floors create something closer to a bleached Mediterranean calm. The restaurant maintains the same tonal contrast: cream banquettes, ebonised tables, globe pendants suspended on rope, and a salon wall of decorative mirrors and plates arranged in deliberate asymmetry.

Set across four lushly landscaped acres, the historic property features 60 Spanish-style guest rooms & suites, and 12 private villas that blend residential comfort with the easy glamour of old Hollywood. "We have been celebrating our anniversary at Avalon Palm Springs for more than six years, and this visit reminded us exactly why we keep coming back. Even with construction underway, the staff made the weekend feel special, personal, and effortless. General Manager Robert stopped by to say hello and wish us a Happy Anniversary. His leadership has made a real difference. The hotel feels warmer, more polished, and more consistent than ever. Fabian is outstanding — upbeat, happy, and always looking for ways to make the stay better. He came over to wish us a Happy Anniversary and made incredible watermelon smashes. At the front desk, Christina, Grace, Lynn, and Candice were helpful from check-in to checkout. Lynn especially stood out. Every time we walked into the lobby, even during construction, she was cheerful, knowledgeable, and ready to help. She is a breath of fresh air and a huge asset to the hotel. The pool and Chi Chi team — Emily, Jasmine, Fabian, Eloy, Brian, Juan, Jason, and Guillermo — took such good care of us. Even when we were at the kids’ pool, they kept checking in, delivered refreshing drinks, and made sure we had plenty of water and food. Jason’s breakfast service was excellent, and Guillermo was fantastic behind the bar. Suzie at Melvyn’s is wonderful — friendly, professional, and she makes fantastic drinks, especially martinis. Michelle, the Food & Beverage Manager, also went out of her way to wish us a Happy Anniversary and always makes our stays feel fun and memorable. If you want a stylish Palm Springs stay with genuine hospitality, Avalon is the one. We already cannot wait to return."

"We had a wonderful two days at the Avalon. It is such a quiet and picturesque hotel. We enjoyed two of the three pools- a walk in time lined with umbrellas . The gardens were beautiful with palm trees, flowers and bushes. The service was perfect. We also thoroughly appreciated the partnership with Ingleside hotel a two minutes walk. There one night we had drinks and listened to live music. We felt we experienced authentic Palm Springs. We do want to come back to the Avalon."

"We had a wonderful stay. The pools were great. The main pool had more people, but a different one was quieter and relaxing. The gym is small but had everything I would want for my workout. The restaurant is being renovated so we didn't dine in the temporary restaurant onsite. We ordered some items to eat in our room and they were tasty. Candice helped us change rooms due to our first room being next to the laundry room and employees talking outside of our window. She moved us quickly with a free upgrade. No fuss, no hassle, it was great. Its a cute property and as you walk around, you'll smell the different flowers, it's really nice. Its close to so many restaurants and shopping in Palm Springs. We walked everywhere, it was fun."

"This was our first trip to Palm Springs and choosing the Avalon Hotel & Bungalows for our 14th wedding anniversary turned out to be perfect. From the moment we arrived, James made us feel genuinely welcomed. He acknowledged our anniversary right away, and that thoughtful gesture set the tone for our entire stay. James arranged a discounted room upgrade, which was such a kind surprise. Shortly after settling in, we received an anniversary gift of chocolate and wine delivered to our room — a touch that made our celebration feel even more special. The room itself was clean, immaculate, and beautifully maintained. The entire property felt peaceful and quiet, creating a relaxing environment that made it easy to unwind and enjoy our time together. Every staff member we met was warm, attentive, and committed to making our stay memorable. The grounds are serene, stylish, and impeccably cared for, adding to the overall experience. Because of James and the wonderful team at the Avalon, our first Palm Springs trip was unforgettable. We will definitely book here again for our next visit."
