PB hotel design editorial

Prohibition money built the original structure on North Indian Canyon Drive in 1936 — a Spanish Colonial Revival compound reportedly financed by a Los Angeles mobster, its stucco walls and terracotta roof tiles designed to project respectable Californian ease while serving considerably less respectable purposes. Colony Palms Hotel takes its name from the surrounding Movie Colony neighborhood, where Hollywood's golden-age establishment retreated from scrutiny, and that layered history — glamour, discretion, mild transgression — runs through its recent reimagining as visibly as the bougainvillea climbs its courtyard arches. The renovation brought the interiors into sharp, committed conversation with the property's era without tipping into pastiche. The lobby sets the register immediately: a trompe-l'oeil diamond-pattern marble floor in green, black, and white anchors a room furnished with sheepskin-draped tubular steel chairs and mint velvet petal-back sofas, a dark wood reception desk trimmed in brass rising against a backdrop of fluted green lacquer. Guest rooms carry the chromatic commitment further — forest-green channel-tufted headboards against botanical or geometric wallpapers, olive velvet ottomans, cane-framed side tables, and Roman blinds in coordinating patterns that suggest a well-traveled 1940s collector rather than a design-hotel brand exercise. At the pool, green-and-white striped awnings shade cane-and-lacquer dining chairs beneath a clear view of the San Jacinto Mountains, the whole scene closer to a Slim Aarons photograph than anything conceived after 2000.

About

Originally built in 1936 by reputed Purple Gang Mobster Al Wertheimer, the Colony Palms Hotel was once a saloon, speakeasy and gambling house that later became a playground for Hollywood ICONS including Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin & Rita Hayworth. Colony Palms Hotel has maintained its nobility as a stunning four-star boutique hotel spread out over a three acre property. The rooms promise subtle sophistication with brilliantly colored mosaic tiles and fabrics, rich woods, and suzani headboards. Many have fireplaces and claw-foot bathtubs. Mature gardens throughout the property provide privacy, and intimate outdoor spaces, and the rooms open to the a central courtyard with pool. The hotel’s restaurant, the Purple Palm boasts exquisite cuisine and a stunning view of both the pool and San Jacinto Mountains. The newly redesigned Spa offers a serene atmosphere and top of the line treatments. Colony Palms Hotel also plays host to a variety of stunning weddings and events, with the option of utilizing a newly refreshed private event space or a full property buyout for a truly intimate celebration. Colony Palms Hotel is a mix of modern luxuries with a dash of romance and tranquil getaway.

"I recently stayed at the Colony Palms Hotel and Bungalows, and to say I am deeply disappointed would be an understatement. While the property itself has potential, the entire experience was completely derailed by the appalling lack of professionalism from the management team, specifically the Front Office Manager, DeeAnna Windh. From the moment of check-in, it was clear that guest satisfaction is a zero priority for her. We encountered a major issue with our reservation and room readiness, and when we politely asked to speak with a manager to resolve it, DeeAnna’s attitude was shockingly dismissive and defensive. Instead of offering a solution or exhibiting basic hospitality, she was patronizing, rude, and treated our legitimate concerns as an inconvenience to her day. An establishment of this caliber relies heavily on its leadership to set the standard for service. Unfortunately, DeeAnna Windh sets a standard of hostility and incompetence. Her complete lack of empathy and poor communication skills ruined what was supposed to be a relaxing getaway. A beautiful property means absolutely nothing if the front office management treats paying guests with utter contempt. I will never stay here again, and I strongly advise others to look elsewhere in Palm Desert if you expect to be treated with basic respect."

"This hotel is amazing. The staff, the rooms, the pool, the Colony Club are all stunning. I came here alone to relax after Coachella and I could not be happier about the selection."

"Exceptional service. A quiet, cute hotel with an excellent pool set up and bar. The restaurant served a nice breakfast."

"We stopped in for lunch at the bar. Nice lunch but poor bar service. Seems that the bar staff were more interested in kibitzing with each other than serving us. Served us poolside tacos which were excellent. They did not provide us side plates (we were sharing and its a messy dish) which made it awkward to eat. When eventually the bartend noticed my empty beer (about 15 mins) he asked if I wanted another. That was the first attention we were able to get - so we won't be back for a casual lunch. Service was reflected in my less than 10% tip. I could have mentioned these things to him but it shouldn't be necessary. Neither should my wait for the bill and eventually having to almost walk away before we got attention. Needs a manager to smarter up the service."

"My stay at The Colony Palms had some highlights aesthetically, but overall the service and experience did not live up to expectations...especially given the price point. At check-in, the staff wasn’t very informative about the amenities or property layout. We were offered a welcome drink, which was a nice touch in theory, but the glasses weren’t clean, so we didn’t actually get to enjoy it until later in the evening. The biggest disappointment was the pool service. It consistently took about 25 minutes to get drinks from the bar, and there was no staff bringing orders to guests. This happened multiple times. On top of that, there were no chairs available for me and my boyfriend either morning because they were all claimed by around 8 a.m., which made it difficult to enjoy the main amenity we were looking forward to. Pool towels ran out by 12 when we got to the pool, so we didn't get towel right away either. There wasnt even a lot of people in the pool area for it to seem overwhelming for the staff. Food quality was also underwhelming. While staff were passing out popsicles poolside, they only made it to about a quarter of the guests, which felt inconsistent and poorly managed. Overall, the property itself is beautiful, but for the price, the service fell short. Between the slow pool service, lack of seating, and uneven hospitality, the experience felt overpriced and not worth the cost. I wouldn’t return unless there were major improvements to service and guest experience."
