PB hotel design editorial

Against the raw face of the San Jacinto Mountains, where downtown Palm Springs gives way to desert scrub and the light turns amber by mid-afternoon, a low-slung white stucco complex of three-storey wings and articulated balconies frames a landscape of columnar cacti, fan palms, and yellow poolside umbrellas. Drift Palm Springs, which arrived as part of the Drift Hotels collection with a design sensibility rooted in the slow-travel movement, takes the pueblo-inflected modernism of the Coachella Valley and strips it back to something closer to a high-desert meditation on material restraint. The massing — stepped volumes, flat rooflines punctuated by warm timber pergola accents, generous private balconies — is in clear conversation with the midcentury resort tradition of Palm Springs without slavishly repeating it. Inside, the palette is sand, raw linen, and bleached oak: platform beds sit on woven jute rugs against upholstered linen headboards, with solid oak cube nightstands and paired black steel wall sconces keeping the geometry deliberately spare. Botanical photography in deep violet frames brings the surrounding desert flora into the rooms as abstraction. The lobby bar works a different register — a kiva-style plaster fireplace anchors one corner, wicker barrel chairs gathered around it, while a ceiling-mounted steel bottle rack draws the eye toward a white zellige-tiled bar counter. The overall atmosphere is one of considered informality, the kind of desert retreat that feels arrived-at rather than manufactured.

Drift Palm Springs offers spacious suites, with one to four-bedroom layouts, full kitchens and living areas, and balconies or patios. "Super cool hotel. Really understand how to create an atmosphere around the restaurant, bar and pool area. Food was delicious, and staff was friendly and welcoming. Rooms were spacious, cool and clean."

"The pros: the poolside margaritas were really good. Beds were comfortable. Cons: there isn’t a closet to hang long dresses. All my long dresses for going out had to stay folded on top of my suitcase. So weird. A two bedroom suite with full living room, a “full” kitchen, and nowhere to hang clothes. And there isn’t an iron and ironing board. Only a handheld steamer (that I had to use on the kitchen counter because…. Nowhere to hang the item for steaming). The steamer did not work on the wrinkles on my linen pants. I asked the front desk for a regular iron and ironing board, but they don’t have one. On to the kitchen…. There is no stovetop or oven. Or microwave! How to reheat leftovers?? We were able to reheat pizza in a toaster oven. But we had many other leftovers that just stayed in the fridge because we could not reheat them. Also- no coffee pot or keurig. A family of 4 staying in a 2 bedroom suite with a kitchen, but only this weird teeny tiny pour-over coffee thing. It would be fabulous if the hotel had coffee in the lobby. No such luck. Which brings me to my next point- there is no lobby or front desk. There’s a curbside front desk that you can text to at any time of day for questions, which is nice in theory, but I got the feeling that all the questions I texted were responded to by AI. And then room cleaning…. They charge you to have your room cleaned. Luckily we stayed 5 nights, so that includes a one time cleaning, but if you stay 4 nights and would the sheets changed at some point, you have to pay for it. Fortunately they replenish towels for free. The living room situation is ok… nice tv and books to read. But the couch felt like it was made out of plywood- it was so inconvertible!"

"Titanium Elite with Marriott 12 years, this is the most disappointing hotel I’ve stayed at in that timeframe. Avoid this hotel, shame on Marriott for their affiliation."

"The room was spacious and the property was lovely, however for what I was paying, I was SHOCKED to find out that they planned to charge an extra $65 just to make up the room. Sorry, but that seems like a fairly standard hotel amenity. Additionally, my friend stepped on a tiny piece of glass that was on the floor. I also received texts from the front desk accusing us of having our TV on too loud at the wee hours of the morniing. We were sleeping from 11-7am. We never even got the TV to work properly. Cannot believe this came from a Marriott property. I wouldn't recommend this hotel."

"Just a normal hotel. We stayed here on points thinking it was going to be this fantastic modern hotel and we just found it to be basic and minimal. The shower was nice. The rooms were concrete floors with a rug under the bed. It was nice to have a hotel with a key pad instead of a card to keep tract of. The check in process was lacking. The people were nice but we were told we would get a text to check into our room and we never did. We were able to leave our luggage with them though. The bar in the hotel was the BEST! The drinks and food were fantastic and the bartenders were amazing."
