PB hotel design editorial

Indigo was never just a color choice at Holiday House Palm Springs — it was a declaration. When designer Waldo Fernandez oversaw the renovation of this 1951 mid-century motor court property in Palm Springs' Historic Tennis Club neighborhood, he committed to a palette of cobalt and white with the conviction of someone who understood that restraint in a desert resort can read as timidity. The two-story white stucco structure, with its flat roof, steel-railed exterior staircase, and ribbon windows, carries the modest geometry of postwar California motel architecture exactly as built — the intervention is entirely in how the spaces have been dressed. Inside, the lobby lounge sets the tone with cobalt-lacquered concrete floors, wicker armchairs upholstered in blue-and-white botanical prints, and a mid-century multi-arm brass floor lamp anchoring one corner beneath an urchin-style burst pendant. Guest rooms layer block-printed indigo bedspreads over cane-headboard beds against boldly patterned feature wallpaper — a graphic sunburst motif that stops just short of maximalist — while suites furnish their living areas with deep-navy sofas, oval marble-topped coffee tables on walnut stretcher bases, and abstract California art in warm ochre and terracotta. The kidney-shaped pool, ringed with vintage-style aluminum loungers beneath navy market umbrellas, frames the San Jacinto Mountains with the casual confidence of a property that knows its setting does most of the work.

"I’m writing this review as I think it’s very important people have a full understanding of what to expect. I tried to submit a trip advisor review through the hotels feedback platform but I suspect since it was not a positive review, they have chosen not to post it. I went for a birthday trip hoping to relax and feel restored and the hotel just did not meet expectations especially at 400+ per night. We booked a best room and there were a few issues. Our patio furniture was broken and the cushions were old and uncomfortable and our water never got hot in the shower. The pool area is nice but all 3 days we were there the chairs had pistachio shells underneath, indicating that they do not sweep it regularly. They could not keep towels stocked at the pool despite us regularly asking for them. The cushions on the loungers felt old and dirty. The pool constantly had bugs in it and there were cockroaches poolside and in the pool on our last day. The staff is nice but does not engage with guests. They do not come around to take food/drink orders and the one time they walked around with fruit they completely ignored us. The lunch offerings were good but the breakfast was not good at all. The bagels were grocery store quality at best and the offerings just weren’t appetizing which was annoying because they insisted we pay a resort fee to include breakfast. We ended up eating out for breakfast 2/3 days we were there. Overall we were expecting a lot more based on previous reviews and we were left disappointed."

"We chose this highly rated hotel expecting it to be the highlight of our three-night stay -- and it wasn’t. Check-in was warm, and we appreciated getting into our room about 90 minutes early. The property itself is well kept and has the boutique Palm Springs vibe you’d expect. Our room was clean and housekeeping was excellent. Unfortunately, a few key issues brought down the experience. One morning at breakfast, the bagels were covered in mold -- we realized it halfway through eating them. We flagged it to staff and received only a quick “sorry,” with no follow-up. At the pool, towels weren’t consistently restocked, and we had to ask staff to bring more out multiple times. The pool itself wasn’t well maintained -- one morning it was covered in bugs and debris, and we ended up trying to clean it ourselves just to use it. We also had a strange issue with room keys—only one was available, and we were told to come back the next day for a second. At a property charging a $40/day resort fee, these issues are unacceptable and hard to overlook."

"This is mine and my wife's favorite Palm Springs spot - we've done two special occasion trips here and they never disappoint! The rooms are so fun, have plenty of space, and the clientele is upscale and not pretentious. And you CANNOT beat the location! We'll be back!"

"We had a mixed experience at Holiday House. The property itself is beautiful, and we really enjoyed the location, amenities, and overall atmosphere. All other staff we interacted with were warm and pleasant. Unfortunately, our arrival experience was very disappointing. After a full day of travel, I arrived around noon simply to confirm check-in, as the reservation was under my husband’s name and he was not scheduled to arrive until midnight. When I explained the situation, I was told by the General Manager, Rosemary, that she “legally” could not check me in. While I understood the policy, the interaction was dismissive and unhelpful. There was no effort to problem-solve or offer guidance, and I was left unsure how I would access the room that evening. The situation was eventually resolved by contacting Expedia to add my name to the reservation. When I returned later, I was able to check in smoothly, which highlighted that the situation could have been handled very differently from the start. While we did enjoy the property overall, this experience created unnecessary stress and made us genuinely unsure about returning."

"The service was exceptional - genuinely kind, attentive, and welcoming from start to finish. You can really feel the care the team puts into creating a great experience. The design is impeccable, with beautiful blue accents that add a fresh, approachable touch to a modern aesthetic. Everything felt thoughtfully curated, making it both stylish and comfortable. A truly standout experience all around."
