PB hotel design editorial

William Cody designed the original compound in 1952 for industrialist Jack Wrather, and the single-storey bungalow structures he placed along the base of the San Jacinto Mountains remain among the most quietly authoritative examples of Desert Modernism in Palm Springs. L'Horizon Resort and Spa, set within the Deepwell Estates neighborhood, was restored and repositioned in the early 2010s, the kidney-shaped pool and low-slung pavilions with their deep overhangs and floor-to-ceiling glass walls kept largely intact — Cody's geometry too good to argue with. Inside, the interiors navigate a careful line between mid-century fidelity and contemporary hotel comfort. The images reveal two distinct room registers: one category preserves exposed wood-beam ceilings, whitewashed brick, and original masonry fireplaces faced in patinated corten steel — the Desert Modern idiom treated with genuine respect — while a second, more recent suite typology layers terrazzo floors, fluted walnut wall paneling, boucle sofas, Chandigarh-lineage scissor chairs, and a veined marble cocktail table into something closer to current design conversation. The pool terrace, dressed in white canvas cabanas and powder-coated loungers against a backdrop of mature Washington palms and the bare granite ridgeline behind, holds the property's essential atmosphere: the feeling of a very well-kept private compound that has simply never gone out of fashion.

"I stayed at L’Horizon Resort & Spa for one night on May 16, 2026 from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. There were several things I really appreciated about the property: the room was beautiful and spacious, the massage was excellent, breakfast was great, and the setting had a quiet Palm Springs resort feel. The biggest positive, though, was the staff. Every person we interacted with was warm, helpful, and clearly doing their best. They were genuinely wonderful. The issues we experienced did not feel like a lack of effort from the team; they felt like the result of the hotel being noticeably short-staffed and not giving the staff enough support to deliver the level of service the property is clearly aiming for. Room The room itself was beautiful, spacious, and very clean. It opened out toward hedges near the pool, which gave it a nice indoor-outdoor Palm Springs feeling. The room also had a tablet meant to provide information about the hotel, menus, and services, but because the Wi-Fi was not working reliably, the tablet was basically useless for our entire stay. That became more frustrating than it might sound, because we had to keep walking to reception to ask for printed dinner and breakfast menus. Spa The spa was one of the best parts of the visit. My massage was incredible. The massage rooms appeared to be temporary, but they still had everything needed for a relaxing treatment. Most importantly, the masseur was excellent and very communicative about pressure and comfort throughout the massage. That part of the experience felt thoughtful, professional, and high-quality. Service and Staff The staff was the real highlight of the stay. Everyone we spoke with was kind, attentive, and beyond helpful within the limits of what they could control. They were clearly trying hard to make things work, even when the hotel itself seemed understaffed. That distinction is important: the service issues did not come from the staff being careless or unfriendly. Quite the opposite. The staff were wonderful. The problem was that there did not seem to be enough people working to keep up with the number of guests, especially around the pool and with room service. Pool Area The main pool area was very busy, and because used towels were not being cleared, it was difficult to tell which seats were actually available and which were being held by guests who had left. The pool itself also felt too small for the number of people using it. There is another newer “pool” area on the newer side of the hotel, but it is not really a full pool. The water only came up around knee level, so it is more of a place to sit and soak up the sun than to actually swim. Room Service Room service was disappointing. Because the tablet was not usable without Wi-Fi, ordering required extra trips to reception. Dinner was okay, but because of the delay, it was dropped off cold. Utensils were forgotten, and there was no table setup for eating in the room. I realize not every hotel serves room service on a wheeled dining table, but at a higher-end property, I did expect the basics to be smoother. Having to go back to reception for help with simple things took away from the feeling of being able to relax. Again, the staff we spoke with were helpful and kind. This felt more like an operational issue than a people issue. Wi-Fi The Wi-Fi was the biggest problem. It was awful and very unreliable. At times we would get around 10 mb/second, and then suddenly it would drop or disappear completely. We were trying to have a day off, but one small work request that normally would have taken about 10 minutes ended up taking hours because the Wi-Fi was so spotty. We eventually had to rely on our phones, but even Verizon service was inconsistent. We had actually been considering this hotel as a possible place to stay for a week while working remotely, but based on this experience, I would not do that unless the Wi-Fi is fixed. In this day and age, dependable internet is not a luxury feature; it is a basic expectation, even when you are trying to disconnect. We asked about it several times, and while the staff were sympathetic, management said there was nothing they could do. For a property at this level, that was disappointing. Breakfast Breakfast was great. We were lucky to be there early, because there are only a limited number of tables near the pool and under the canopy in front of it. Like other parts of the property, the space is beautiful but limited, so timing matters. Cleanliness The room was very clean, and the property itself has a beautiful, well-designed look. The main cleanliness issue we noticed was around the pool, where used towels were not being cleared quickly enough. That made the area feel more chaotic and also made it hard to know which chairs were actually free. Location and Atmosphere The property has a quiet, stylish Palm Springs atmosphere, and the room’s access toward the hedges and pool gave it a nice resort feeling. The overall setting is beautiful and relaxing, which is why the service and operational issues stood out even more. Value For a hotel at this level, the value depends heavily on whether the basics are working well. The room, spa, breakfast, and especially the staff were all strong, but the unreliable Wi-Fi, cold room service, pool crowding, and staffing issues made the stay feel less polished than expected. For a short leisure stay where you do not need to work or rely on internet access, it may still feel worthwhile. For a longer stay or a work-from-hotel trip, I would be cautious. Overall Experience Overall, this was a mixed stay. The property is beautiful, the room was clean and spacious, the spa treatment was excellent, and the staff were genuinely wonderful. I want to emphasize that the people working there were not the problem; they were the best part of the experience. The issues were operational: the hotel felt short-staffed, the pool area was hard to enjoy when busy, room service had multiple problems, and the Wi-Fi was unreliable enough to significantly affect the stay. I would consider staying again because there is a lot to like here, especially the staff and the overall atmosphere, but only after confirming that the Wi-Fi has been fixed. I would recommend L’Horizon more for couples or leisure travelers looking for a short, relaxing Palm Springs escape who do not need to work or rely heavily on internet access. For anyone planning a longer stay, a work-from-hotel trip, or expecting seamless luxury-level service, I would be cautious until the staffing and connectivity issues are addressed."

"I have ALWAYS wanted to stay here and when it was finally our time I think we were 10 years too late… while a great design and layout, peaceful atmosphere and friendly service, unfortunately they have not been able to keep up with the facilities and maintenance of the rooms. I wish I had idealized it a little less, and that the property was a little more realistic about the quality of their accommodations and priced accordingly. Staff was again very nice, but there was no effort at going above and beyond to delight in our visit. Unfortunate, but hopefully honest reviews will help the next considering couple."

"The property is lovely, the desert landscape beautifully maintained, the newish section, Herman Bungalows are well appointed and architecturally stunning with a shallow lounging pool that is unfortunately, unheated. They have restaurant facilities, but the same minimal menu is all that is available for an entire week so after the first day we ate off site. Management of the hotel is in need of training their staff in the art of hospitality. Very few greetings as you pass staff, including at the front desk. The Herman Bungalows which are expensive, offer mini-bar amenities at 3x's the market price, which seems an insult for having paid so much for the room to begin with. Poolside service in this Herman area was barely visible and frequently no one was available. Most annoying, 6:30 am the maintenance team was power washing the concrete surface around the pool waking up all the guests surrounding the pool (surely they could have waited till 7:30??). Summary, it's a gorgeous property will poor management and could be so much better. All that said, Matt who appears to be the Jack of all trades, and the bar tenders were friendly and welcoming."

"Despite being right off a 4-lane street, the resort felt very secluded. The surrounding bushes made it feel exclusive. The ambience is great. The vibe was amazing. If you’re looking for a family get away or games and fun this is not the place for you. This was very relaxing and chill and just what the doctor ordered. Honestly hate giving this a great review bc I love this little gem of seclusion for a get away that I hope too may people don’t know about it so I can keep it for myself."

"The bungalows are pretty run down and old. I’m a frequent palm springs visitor and enjoy a good mid century renovation, but this was just run down. Leaky water faucet dripping all night, thin walls, dark dingy bungalows, etc. I could hear every word exchanged between the couple next door. Separately, good luck trying to get the hotel to honor Amex fine hotels benefits. I was told they didn’t have my chosen spa service available at all on the day I arrived. When this happens at other hotels it’s standard to honor it another way. But they wouldn’t allow me to use the credit toward something else. Amex said this is wrong and has now reached out to the hotel 3x to resolve the issue and it’s still unresolved and they claimed they didnt get any emails from Amex. They didn’t upgrade me either as outlined in fine hotels terms even though upgrades were available, so I spent hundreds on an upgrade. (The Herman bungalows are “another resort” when it comes to free upgrades, but if you offer to pay to upgrade, poof, suddenly it’s doable.) On the plus side food was good and most staff were nice minus the management team. Just keep your expectations low, and expect a lot of excuses."
