PB hotel design editorial

Midcentury Palm Springs has attracted plenty of revival projects, but few have leaned so deliberately into the fantasy of the era as the Sands Hotel & Spa in Indian Wells, where a 1950s motor lodge was transformed by designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard into something closer to a Hollywood dream of the desert than a faithful restoration. The pink stucco facades, terracotta barrel-tile rooflines, and date palms framing the pool deck — striped cabanas in graphic black and white anchoring the scene — telegraph the Rat Pack era with obvious pleasure, while the 47 rooms layer that nostalgia with enough contemporary comfort to keep it from feeling like a theme park. Inside, Bullard's signature maximalism finds a disciplined channel: arched headboards upholstered in indigo block-print fabric, shibori-style quilts, fretwork bar cabinets painted white, and starburst brass ceiling pendants that nod to the atomic age without straining for irony. The restaurant interior doubles down with green-and-white checkered tile floors, rattan bistro chairs, pink banquette seating, and walls hung salon-style with vintage Palm Springs ephemera — magazine covers, poolside photography, framed mirrors in gilded and bamboo frames. On warm evenings the glazed wall folds back entirely, collapsing the boundary between bar and desert garden, where a tiled fire pit and clipped agaves complete what Bullard has always done best: interiors that feel genuinely lived in rather than merely curated.

"The attention to detail at this hotel is outstanding. It is a beautiful hideaway tucked into Indian Springs. It feels like a small, cozy resort. The restaurant food is delicious. The complimentary coffee by the pool in the morning is a fun way to start your day. They also pass cold treats around daily while you're lounging at the pool which is a fun surprise."

"I proposed to my fiancée, Chelsea, during our time here and from the moment we arrived, there was a genuine kindness to everything. Totally thoughtful, attentive, and real. You can feel when a place cares, and Desert Sands absolutely does. We stayed in the Presidential Suite, and it was such a special space. Comfortable, chicly done, and full of small touches that made it feel personal rather than just “nice.” What meant the most, though, was the staff. Every interaction felt warm and sincere. A special thank you to the restaurant team for helping coordinate a surprise so seamlessly. They were a huge part of making the night what it was. And Jennifer, the hotel manager was the best ever maybe? Your presence and care throughout made a lasting impression, and it didn’t go unnoticed. Part of me wants to keep this place a quiet secret… but you’ve earned the praise."

"I love to stay at the SANDS, the decor is classy, beautiful, relaxing and reminds me of Morocco. I like to use the pool and jacuzzi when I can. I like the space of the room, the details of the decor, the relaxing water fountain in the patio. The hotel personnel is always smiling and welcoming."

"Beautiful hotel with gorgeous guest rooms. Some of the best decorated rooms i've stayed at. The pool is small but well serviced. The restaurant on site was delicious and there's plenty to do in the area."
