PB hotel design editorial

Gene Autry built his desert retreat here in 1959, and the sprawling low-rise compound on Palm Canyon Drive has carried that sense of private fantasy ever since. When Jonathan Adler and his partner Simon Doonan reimagined the property as The Parker Palm Springs in 2004, working within the original Modernist bones — breeze-block screens casting lacework shadows against the San Jacinto Mountains, flat-roofed pavilions stepping back through mature fan palms — the brief was essentially to amplify rather than erase. The 144-room resort sits inside that mid-century armature with a kind of gleeful eclecticism: white four-poster frames paired with Moroccan Beni Ourain rugs, Bertoia wire chairs cushioned in citrus orange and chartreuse beneath pleated orange canvas canopies, carved Indian folding screens used as room dividers against dark-beamed ceilings hung with textured plaster. The exterior breeze-block wall visible in the images — a classic California Modernist sunscreen, monumental in scale against that cobalt desert sky — signals the architectural seriousness beneath Adler's maximalist surface. Pool terraces furnished with green-and-white striped market umbrellas and oversized glazed pots carry the atmosphere of a private estate rather than a resort hotel, the Moroccan-influenced planting scheme reinforcing that residential mood. Indoors, grasscloth ceilings, raw-stucco walls, and a collector's mix of mid-century and global craft pieces give each room the feeling of somewhere assembled over time — charismatic rather than curated, which is precisely the effect Adler has always worked toward.

About

Thirteen lushly planted acres in a desert climate is probably the most defining and remembered quality of one's stay here at this luxury resort. Sense of place is shaped by walking these planted paths beneath arches of green, through tunnels of hedgerow that periodically open up to the spread of a lawn, the shade of a tree, a cluster of tall pampas grass or a court of palms. A fire circle, a tiled fountain, fruit trees and herb gardens -- hammocks, strung between palm trees, hidden niches -- just some of the finds along the way. Whether exploring the entire weave of walkways throughout the Estate or simply following the path that takes you from your room to breakfast at Norma's, a drink at the MiniBar or a poolside chaise, they are their own suspended moments -- sometimes heavy with scent in the night air, bright with morning sun overhead, or thick with the warmth of a late afternoon.

"Our recent four-night stay at Parker Palm Springs was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this property delivers a level of hospitality that is both effortless and highly personalized. The setting is iconic — lush, whimsical, and impeccably maintained... but what truly sets the Parker apart is its people. Chris and Fred are the incredible Concierges and were absolute standouts. Thoughtful, intuitive and incredibly well-connected... they curated experiences for us that elevated our entire stay. Every recommendation was spot-on, and their genuine warmth made us feel like VIPs from start to finish. Daniel at the front entrance welcomed us each day with such positive energy and professionalism... a small but meaningful touch that never went unnoticed. At the front desk, Alexis was gracious, polished and efficient, ensuring every detail of our stay was seamless. The Parker strikes that rare balance between luxury and personality. It is sophisticated without being pretentious and truly relaxed without sacrificing service. It’s a place you don’t just visit… you experience. We will absolutely be back, and next time, for even longer!"

"Years ago, this was a go-to place in Palm Springs. Unfortunately, my wife, son & I visited this past week and the property has gone downhill and I can no longer recommend staying here. The Parker used to be the charming best-of-the-60's glamour spot in the desert - it was the closer-to-LA stop for Hollywoodites before driving all the way to the La Quinta Resort, but for years clearly the Parker's rooms have not been updated or cared for - the carpets are worn, the faucets leak, the shutters are peeling, concrete pillars around the property are cracked and listing to one side. We walked the hallway to our room and the firedoor had cracks running the height of it. It's like visiting your 70 year old grandmother and discovering her in a worn dressing gown, no make-up and flip-flops. On a positive note, the gardens are still beautiful and the staff (front desk, concierge, catering & Norma's) is still lovely. Probably the worst part of the experience, though, was sitting in the garden with our 4-month old and realizing that there were live, capped electrical wires just dangling for a bush inches from his head. We wrote to the Managing Director about this and he read our email and didn't even respond (it's been a week). I think enough said. We hope the property gets new management and invests in the hard product, since the soft product is still pretty good. In the future, my family is going back to La Quinta Resort."

"Stunning property, so many things to do. I loved the hanging chair in my living room. They had delicious snacks to choose from in my room."
