PB hotel design editorial

Against the raw face of the San Jacinto Mountains — as close to the escarpment as Palm Canyon Drive permits — Thompson Palm Springs makes its argument in white stucco volumes, cantilevered balconies, and flat rooflines that echo the Coachella Valley's mid-century modernist inheritance without imitating it directly. Opened in 2021, the 168-room property was developed on a site long associated with Palm Springs hospitality, its low-rise massing stepping across two and three storeys to keep the mountain backdrop dominant rather than obscured. The architecture, contemporary desert modernist in register, gives every room a private outdoor terrace and a framed view of either the mountains or the palm-lined valley floor below. Inside, the interiors — designed with a layered warmth that runs counter to the bleached minimalism common in desert hotels — move between terrazzo floors, burl-wood nightstands, upholstered headboards in taupe and sage, and brass fittings that carry a quiet 1970s California resonance. The lobby bar anchors the social atmosphere with a curved counter faced in amber glazed tile, dark flagstone flooring, and large-scale artworks that tip toward lowrider culture and Californian botanical imagery. Striped black-and-white umbrellas line the pool deck in a graphic pattern visible from the upper balconies, the San Jacinto ridgeline rising sharply behind — a view that makes the case for this particular site more persuasively than any interior detail could manage.

"My husband and I booked a stay here for Memorial Day weekend using our Amex Platinum. We checked in at 1:00 PM and were promised an upgraded room. Standard 3:00 PM check-in came and went. We checked back at 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, only to be told our room *still* wasn't ready because they were waiting on a previous guest's late checkout. We weren’t the only ones stuck. I noticed multiple guests opening their suitcases in the lobby and in the women restrooms just to change into swimsuits so they could go to the pool while their bags sat with the front desk. It was ridiculous. Holiday weekend or not, keeping guests waiting until 5:00 PM due to a checkout bottleneck is ridiculous inventory management. We got tired of wasting our afternoon in a lobby, so we canceled the booking at 5:00 PM and just went home. Thompson Hotel totally dropped the ball. Save your time and money."

"I was so looking forward to my stay - I have always stayed at The Kimpton, but watched this property be built with high expectations - I treated my niece from the east coast to a week in the desert starting at La Quinta resort, 2 bunch palms and ending at the Thompson. My reservations was very specific. Upper stories with a view, price not being a factor. We got stuffed into a corner room with no view. The room, while well appointed was disappointing at best. There was one robe in the closet, and while the room was clean, it hardly met my expectations. The hotel was not full and the staff somehow could not find us a room with a view as requested. After we departed I received an email to review our stay - Management response to my review was "when you come again we will try and make things better" REALLY? No thank you - back to the Kimpton I go ..................."

"Amazing experience. Appropriately lively and enjoyable stay in Palm Springs. The property was clean and service was impeccable. Easy walk to all "hot" places. The amenities were fully functional and easily accessible. My Upper Stories stay was just what I needed for my trip. If you were deciding between The Thompson and another property, you should book your stay here."
