PB hotel design editorial

A cluster of Spanish Colonial Revival bungalows in Palm Springs's Tahquitz River Estates neighborhood, originally built in the 1940s and long beloved by European expatriates as a kind of bohemian hideaway, was reimagined in 2017 as Villa Royale under the creative direction of designer Kelli Miller. The renovation kept the low-slung, terracotta-roofed compound intact while layering a graphic mid-century sensibility over its Mediterranean bones — a combination that feels less like a decorating exercise than a natural evolution of the Coachella Valley's design inheritance. The 38-room property works a confident tension between its Andalusian architecture — white stucco walls, arched cabana bays clad in black-and-white Moroccan-patterned encaustic cement tiles, saltillo terracotta floors running continuously from pool deck into guest rooms — and a mid-century modern furniture program that keeps everything from tipping into pastiche. Rooms are anchored by full walnut paneled headboard walls, low-platform upholstered beds in heathered grey, walnut credenzas with brass pulls, and slat-framed sofas in bold black-and-white stripe, olive wingback chairs adding an acid note against teal velvet drapes. The bar, Don Cuco, shifts registers entirely: a coffered oak ceiling, dark paneled wainscoting, a roaring fireplace dressed in the same encaustic tilework that appears poolside, and velvet club chairs around brass-legged tables create a room that carries the atmosphere of a private members' club transported, somewhat improbably, to the desert.

About

Set at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains, Villa Royale is a 3.5-acre free-spirited, adults-only hideaway amidst the desert palms of the Coachella Valley. A secluded stomping ground reimagined where Spanish influence and architectural nuances of the Post-War period stand side-by-side with modern design appeal for which Palm Springs is known today. Within the Mission Revival Style villas and geometric tiled courtyards, Villa Royale channels the eccentric history of the destination and mesmerism of the landscape that has long lured wild, free-thinking and creative spirits to the Southern California desert. Studded with flowering desert flora and imbued with mid century decor and vintage furnishings, Villa Royale beckons travelers to the desert for raw beauty and escape. The hotel is comprised of two spaces; the main complex houses 31 of Villa Royale’s 38 villa rooms. Across South Indian Trail Road sits Villa Rosa with seven California ranch style villas that mirror the design cues and playful vibe of Villa Royale, offering travelers an even more intimate, secluded oasis.

"If you are looking for a place to stay while visiting the desert, don't hesitate. This property is truly delivering on every level- it's private, quiet, beautiful, peaceful, comfortable and all this surrounded by extremely friendly and helpful staff. Aldo, Lisa, Julio and Jasmine are the best, kindest and most attentive reception staff team who will always go above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need. The rooms are beautifully decked out with mid-century wood panelling and exquisite attention to detail with the chosen artwork that highlights the history of this wonderful place. Having the Del Rey restaurant on site is a true privilege, excellent food and even better drinks- those cocktails are outstanding. The 3 pools give you a great choice between a quieter more relaxing vibe, or a slightly more fun and upbeat one. From the moment you arrive, this hotel will make you feel good. I have been traveling to Palm Springs from Los Angeles for over 15 years, and without a doubt this is the nicest hotel with the most character and charm I have ever stayed in. My choice, every time."

"Would give 5 stars if they or TripAdvisor weren’t so sneaky about the resort fee at time of booking. We booked 3 nights through TripAdvisor and there was absolutely no mention of resort fee. Turns out it was mentioned in the fine print of the confirmation email after booking. But other booking sites are upfront about it and when I tested it for other dates with same hotel on TripAdvisor, it DID mention the fees in the total. But I spoke to TripAdvisor and they said it’s up to the hotel. So we paid an extra $50 per night that we had not budgeted for. And would have booked through a different platform had we known. The good news is that the hotel is Heaven on earth! Even during summer heat. So much attention to detail to keep the guests happy and the staff is lovely. The resort fee thing just leaves a bitter taste."

"This past weekend, my friends and I visited Palm Springs for a birthday. We were invited to check-out and stay at the Villa Royale for the weekend. Not only was the location perfectly located to our festivities, but it was like a hidden gem inside. From the beginning of our experience come Friday to the last moments of leaving our room, we had experienced real service and appreciation as guests. I had called early morning on Friday to confirm our reservation, as it was our first time using Agoda. The staff, super friendly, and as I discussed our potential timeframe the gentleman that helped us was super accommodating and even allowed us to check-in a bit earlier given the heat and even when they were at full capacity. We were shocked. During our stay, the staff kept us up todate with Text messages, links, wifi passwords, menus, and accommodiations for our dogs. They even went as far as to put clean, like-new dog beds, bowls, treats and toys in our room to make sure sure our furry nuggets were comfortable. Never ever have we seen that. We were able to check-in early as promised, get to our room and even given some very tasty, refreshing and woo-hoo strong sangrias complimentry from the staff. The Villa is beyond exceptional, especially in person. It nicely spaced, 3 pools, great staff, and the food at the Del Rey, omg. I was just ugh. So GOOOOOD. The guests were all amazing and we even through a little pool party fun on our section of the hotel, while keeping it quite and enjoyable for everyone. Noise-level was perfect. It was just ... serene. JC our server on Saturday night, Brilliant human being and they were able to make our experience and stay just ... perfect. Aside from the 118 degree heat all weekend, we had the most enjoyable stay and we would highly recommend it. HIGHLY. This boutique villa is for sure a must stay experience. Step away from corporate hotels and experience a real Luxury comfort and exceptional adults only stay at the VIlla Royale, you won't be disappointed. We will be back in October... for sure. Top Value for a great price. We could not have been happier."
